SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two families will forever be connected after an organ donation saves the life of a woman struggling with heart disease for nearly a decade. Susan Amador's son, David Rivera died, at the age of 30, in 2017 of a brain bleed, caused by a rare clotting disorder. The 30-year-old left behind a 4-year-old and his fiancee. Rivera was a registered organ donor and his organs helped save the lives of five people. His heart was donated to a woman named Sandra, of Chula Vista. On Monday, Rivera's family met the woman who now carries their loved ones' heart. The meeting was made possible through Lifesharing Donate Life, an organization that coordinates organ and tissue donation in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Rivera's mom hopes her story will encourage more people to sign up to be organ donors. 824

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Traveler satisfaction stagnated year-over-year as airports struggle to keep customers happy, according to J.D. Power. According to the report, construction projects and passenger volumes are at least partly responsible for the trend. San Diego International ranked 13th out of 27 in the large airport category, with a score of 774 out of 1,000. To reach the conclusion, the report looked at six factors: Terminal facilities; airport accessibility; baggage claim; security check; check-in/baggage check and food, beverage and retail. “With major terminal construction projects now underway in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and many other airports, it is becoming impossible for travelers not to experience some form of disruption,” said Michael Taylor, Travel Intelligence Lead at J.D. Power. “While these projects are absolutely necessary to address surging demand, they are currently causing passenger delays and confusion. This translates into a rushed passenger experience and less money spent on food, beverage and retail—and it’s slowing the progress of the airport satisfaction we’ve seen in the past several years.”Meanwhile J.D. Power says the experience of getting through security at the airport has improved by five points. The study is based on responses from more than 32,000 U.S. or Canadian residents who traveled through at least one U.S. or Canadian airport that covers both departure and arrival experiences over the last three months. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – While 28,000 doses of the vaccine might sound like a lot, the county says it still won’t be enough to cover health care workers at the top of the list to get it.It’s a start, but immunologist Dr. Robert Schooley says we still have a long way to go.“It’s going to take a while but at least now we understand what the endpoint will be,” said Schooley.RELATED: How a COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed to San Diego's medical workersAccording to San Diego County, the initial shipment of 28,000 vaccines will only cover 72% of the top-tier health are workers who need it. That’s not enough for long-term care residents and staff who are also in the phase 1A top-tier to receive it.The shipment will only cover the first of two doses necessary for the Pfizer vaccine. The second doses will come in subsequent shipments. While there won’t be enough doses for all the front-line workers at UCSD, it is giving them hope.“The good news is we’ll be getting quite a few doses of the vaccine," Schooley says. “We’ll be getting farther down the list than we thought we were going to get.”The next hurdle for the vaccine is gaining widespread public trust.“These vaccines have been in tens-of-thousands of people and the FDA has gone over the data extremely carefully,” said Schooley. “I certainly would have no qualms myself about getting vaccinated this afternoon.”Schooley says about 70% of the population would need to get vaccinated to reach herd immunity. He estimated that could take up to 9 months. The county expects the next shipment of vaccines in three to four weeks. 1592

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the lack of housing in San Diego, you need to act fast or you could miss out on a great home. Some San Diegans are getting proactive. They’re not waiting for a home to go up for rent; they’re reaching out to landlords before the property is even available. 10News is sharing a man's creative way to make it San Diego. All it takes is one breathtaking look and the appeal is undeniable. Orange Avenue, The Hotel Del, the Ferry Landing; they all make Coronado irresistible."Coronado is awesome. It's such a small-town feel. People say ‘hi’ to each other. You know your neighbors," said Cory Stock.Stock is a hard-working Surface Rescue Swimmer Instructor for the Navy. He doesn’t have a lot of time to research and look for a new place to live.RELATED: People converting vans to avoid high rent"Lots of swimming, lots of PT," said Stock.Work for Stock is either at Naval Base San Diego or at Naval Base Coronado right on the island. So, Stock decided Coronado would also be a great place to call home. But there was one problem."The turnaround of places is so quick here," said Stock.Knowing anything in his price range might get snatched up in a heartbeat, Stock decided to get proactive and created a post on the Coronado Happenings Facebook page. He was looking for a one or two bedroom rental no later than January 1. It didn't hurt that he threw in the part about being active duty Navy with excellent credit and references, and that he's also a handyman. RELATED: Think we're in a housing crisis? Try this city"The mere fact that you're in the military; it gives you a lot of credit right off the bat," said Stock. In Coronado, being in the military practically means you're already vetted. And it worked. Within weeks Stack and his girlfriend found an affordable home near work, right in the middle of paradise. "Facebook is so big now and social media,” said Stock. “It's a lot easier to get your name out that way to people you'll probably never meet rather than hoping you bump into somebody."Stock moves into his new place at the beginning of the new year. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While America's Finest City is routinely recognized as one of the best places to live in the country, it's often not for its value.San Diego ranked 36 on the U.S. News and World Report's 125-city "Best Places to Live in the U.S." list. Out of that many cities, many would agree that's a great accomplishment. Though while the city ranked highly on desirability, job market, and quality of life, something residents already know of cast a bit of a shadow: Value.RELATED: MIISD: Changing market could mean opportunity for entry-level San Diego homesSan Diego posted a 3.7 out of 10 when it came to value, the report said.Put bluntly in the city's profile, "Living in San Diego is not particularly affordable."U.S. News pointed to San Diego's housing costs as more than double the national average in 2018, at 5,325. That average cost has continued to climb steadily since 2011, U.S. News says.RELATED: MIISD: San Diego among top cities in the U.S. for staycationsThe pinch is further illustrated by two other stats: Average annual salary and median monthly rent, with totaled ,410 and ,467, respectively, according to the publication. On the flip side, San Diego ranked as the 14th best place to retire in the U.S. and also drew high marks for local entertainment and activities and commute times to travel around the county. As the city's profile states, "San Diegans are willing to pay these elevated prices, though, often referring to the cost-of-living differences as the 'sunshine tax,' or the price of enjoying a year-round temperate climate."If you're looking for the best place to live, U.S. News points to Austin, Texas; Denver, Colo.; and Colorado Springs, Colo., as the top three options. 1730
