SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - A Marine was found dead Monday afternoon at the armory of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to military officials.The Marine had suffered a gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.Military officials did not announce whether the incident was a suicide or accidental firing.The Marine’s identity has not been released. (KGTV) - A new California law could let convicted killers out of prison, and San Diego County's district attorney said her office will fight it on a case-by-case basis.Senate Bill 1437 passed the state Legislature last year and went into effect on January 1. It narrows the definition of murder so that only people who are involved in a killing can be charged with that crime.Before the law, accomplices in a killing could also have been charged with murder."It may let murderers go free, because of how far it goes," said San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said her office will challenge some re-sentencing hearings based on the new law, although she said they don't know how many there will be.One possible case involves Kurese Bell, who He as convicted of murder in 2016 for his role in the robbery of a North Park marijuana dispensary.During the robbery, Bell and another man, Marlon Thomas, got into a shootout with a security guard at the dispensary. The guard shot and killed Thomas.The DA's office argued that Bell should face murder charges because his actions in the robbery led to the shootout and, ultimately, Thomas' death.Bell is currently serving a 65-year-to-life sentence.Stephan said criminals need to be held accountable for the crimes they commit and cause."It's really important that each offender is held culpable at the right level," she said. "That's what justice is about."Supporters of the new law say it is a vital part of California's efforts at criminal justice reform. They say the old law unfairly targeted young minorities.On its website, the group Restore California says the new law makes sentencing in California more "equitable." San Diego (KGTV)- Hygiene continues to be a struggle for those living on the streets, especially during the pandemic. Non-profit Duwara Consciousness is helping the homeless gain access to a hot shower.The non-profit uses its food trailer to feed the homeless. On average, they provide about 1,500 meals per week."Our distribution network currently runs as far as San Ysidro and as far north as Carlsbad," says Harisimran Khalsa.But as we continue to experience the COVID-19 pandemic, Khalsa says access to a hot shower was limited for those in need. This prompted her and partner, Davinder Singh, to move forward with their idea of a shower trailer."Hygiene access is just not as frequent. So you do end up coming down with more bugs, more viruses," says Khalsa. "We think that this is really a time when we have to focus on hygiene for our homeless population."The shower trailer contains seven individual stalls, including one that is ADA compliant."It's really critical for our guests that they have a secure environment in which to shower."Khalsa says about 20 people can use the shower per hour. The stalls are cleaned after each use following CDC guidelines.The trailer comes equipped with sinks for people to wash their hands, shave or brush their teeth. It also has laundry services. The non-profit partners with other organizations to provide space and water.Duwara Consciousness plans to launch the shower trailer on Friday officially, but so far, they say users have been grateful for a simple hot shower. 1525

San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - California is the biggest prizes in the 2020 primary and the remaining Democratic presidential candidates are making a final push to turn out voters in San Diego. Much of their final efforts is focused on getting supporters in the South Bay."We're putting people out in their own neighborhoods, talking to neighbors they already know, making sure they're filling out their absentee ballots," said Joe Biden campaign staffer Jack Hurley.Biden opened an office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista shortly after the Iowa Caucus. While Biden does not have as big a staff or infrastructure as other campaigns, they have seen a boost in volunteers since Biden won the South Carolina primary. "I want to see change and I wanted Joe Biden to be that change, and that means I needed to get to work," said Russell, who walked in to the Biden office Monday to volunteer.Bernie Sanders has a large organization in San Diego, based out of its headquarters in Barrio Logan. Monday, teams worked in shifts to train volunteers to canvass the South Bay, focused particularly on San Ysidro. "Our goal is turning out voters that a lot of them haven't actually voted before. So we're mainly focused on turnout at this point in time," one staffmember told the volunteers."It was tough in the beginning," said Sanders volunteer France Hanna about his first efforts at doorknocking. "But I realize as I share my personal Bernie story with all the doors that I knock on that I have a lot of commonalities with people."The Sanders campaign is particularly working to utilize a relatively new law in California that allows ballot delivery, meaning that campaign volunteers can pick up voters' ballots and deliver them to be counted. Because Sanders emphasizes turnout out non-traditional voters, especially young voters and people of color, ballot delivery could provide a boon, making it easier people who perhaps may not have gone to the polls to cast a ballot.The Mike Bloomberg campaign is also working to reach LatinX voters in the South Bay. "One of the main things we understand about the South Bay is that there is the most potential to turn out voters," said staffer Jesus Cardenas. Bloomberg has teams of volunteers knocking on doors and making calls. "It's going to be a little bit crazy, but it's going to be fun," Cardenas said. SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has voted to support the Trump administration’s lawsuit against California’s sanctuary laws.The board voted 3-1 Tuesday afternoon to support the lawsuit. The board directed that the County’s attorney to file an amicus brief supporting the federal lawsuit.The deadline to file a brief passed, so Chairwoman Kristin Gaspar said the earliest the county can file a brief is if the ruling is appealed to a higher court.RELATED: Escondido City Council votes to support sanctuary policy lawsuitSupervisor Greg Cox was the only one opposed to supporting the lawsuit.
