So he lost 45 pounds, it's literally barbaric."Ralph Whitworth was diagnosed with HPV-related tongue cancer in 2013. It eventually claimed his life in 2016.Before Ralph died, the Whitworths began a quest to find a cure. It's a mission Fernanda has carried on."I feel like we are so close; we're on the tipping point of finding a cure," she explained. The nonprofit they founded in San Diego, The Immunotherapy Foundation, is dedicated to funding the most promising research on HPV-driven cancers."This is a huge problem. Gavin Newsom announced that counties can reopen schools for in-person education when the county has been off the state's watch list for 14 consecutive days.Newsom said schools that don't meet that requirement would have to start the fall school year with distance learning.Though some of California's schools will make that grade for in-person classes this fall, Newsom outlined when schools may be required to go back to distance learning:Schools should consult public health officer first if a classroom needs to go home because of a positive caseA classroom goes to distance learning if there is a confirmed caseA school goes to distance learning if multiple classrooms have cases or more than 5% of a school is positiveA district goes to distance learning if 25% of a district's schools are closed within two weeks"Our students, teachers, staff, and certainly parents, we all prefer in-classroom instruction for all the obvious reasons, social and emotional foundationally. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From business closures to limits on gatherings, there’s mounting evidence that government restrictions do slow the spread of COVID-19. But which policies are the most effective?A study published this month in the journal Science aims to answer that question by examining data from 41 countries outside the U.S.The researchers examined seven kinds of COVID-19 policies in mostly European countries and compared them to case and death rates in those countries over time.The policies included limiting gatherings to 1000 people or less, to 100 people or less, and to 10 people or less; a targeted closure on high-risk businesses; a broad closure of most non-essential businesses; school and university closures; and stay-at-home orders.The authors found limiting gatherings to 10 people or less was the most effective nonpharmaceutical intervention of the seven examined, reducing the transmission rate by 42 percent.Closing schools and universities was next, cutting transmission by 38 percent. The researchers said they were not able to examine the relative importance of closing universities over grade schools because such closures were typically implemented at the same time.Next, the researchers examined the impact of two kinds of business closures. They found broad closures of most non-essential businesses were “only somewhat more effective than targeted closures” of high-risk businesses like restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Broad business closures reduced transmission by 27 percent compared to an 18 percent reduction for targeted closures.“Therefore, targeted business closures can be a promising policy option in some circumstances,” the authors wrote.The study estimates those three policies together -- closing high-risk businesses, closing schools and universities, and limiting gatherings to no more than 10 people -- are enough lower to slow the spread of the virus.In epidemiological terms, interventions are considered successful when they lower the so-called number below 1. The reproduction number, or R number, is the average number of people who become infected from one infectious person. Without interventions, the study found the R number for COVID-19 between January and May was 3.3.The study did not examine the impact of wearing masks, but other studies have found that masks can also significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19.So what about stay-at-home orders? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of businesses shut down Friday after a series of water main breaks severely damaged their buildings. RELATED: Sinkhole reported on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley areaBird Rock Coffee Roasters put the brewing on hold when water came rushing in. "All of a sudden the water started spewing up from the middle of the street," said Co-owner Jeff Taylor. "We had six or eight inches probably busting up against the windows, it started seeping up here underneath the doors actually."One of four water main breaks on Thursday was just outside their coffee shop in Morena. Taylor estimates about ,000 worth of damage. He says his crew acted quickly and kept it from getting worse. "We had sandbags blocking off the inside of the windows to keep water from coming in, it still came in, but I think he saved a lot of product and damage to the store by his efforts."The breaks in Morena flooded business and left about 60 customers without water. Another break on 1-8 left drivers stranded for hours after a sinkhole opened up on the asphalt. Overall, not a great day for a lot of people. "Oh, and by the way, somebody hit my car yesterday, so it was a fun day yesterday," said Taylor. He even started damage control by calling contractors and insurance companies before finding out the city would help him. Now, they're working on drying up so they can start roasting again.  "It really is just life, what are you gonna do. There's nothing to be upset about," Taylor said. "Really you just take it one by one, you deal with it you answer the questions you solve the problems, and you move on to the next one."Taylor said he hopes to be back open brewing coffee on Monday.  1764
