The Scottish Parliament voted on Tuesday to unanimously approve a bill that would provide free feminine hygiene products to the public. The bill says products that are disposable, such as tampons and wipes, will be available to the public for free.The legislation, titled SP Bill 45A, spells out that local authorities ensure “period products” be obtainable free of charge to all persons who need them; education providers make period products obtainable for free for students; and that period products be available for free in public buildings.The legislation points out that Scotland is the first nation in the world to implement such a law, so it is unknown what the cost might be to the government.The Scottish government estimates there are nearly 1.6 million women of menstruation age in Scotland.“Thank you to everyone who has campaigned for period dignity and to my MSP colleagues for backing the Bill tonight. The United States Coast Guard embodies the saying, "always ready."When forecasting natural disasters, however, those two words become much more than a motto -- they could mean the difference between life and death.“With natural disasters, they’re unpredictable," said USCG Capt. "There’s uncertainty but what you have to do is lean back on your training.” With U.S. Coast Guard stations across the country on standby, Watson said his teams are ready to help whenever and wherever they are needed.“When the time comes, and you face something that you maybe weren’t otherwise prepared for, that’s when you exercise on-scene initiative,” he said. “You think critically. You think creatively. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is recalling nearly half a million Kidde smoke detectors, saying they could fail to work in the event of a fire.According to the CPSC, anyone with a Kidde smoke alarm should remove their alarm from the ceiling or wall and look for a yellow cap on the inside of the alarm (see photo above).
