The movie highlights the bi-cultural relationship between San Diego and Mexico. Ruta Madre first premiered in 2017 and has since made its way around the film festival circuit winning various awards. Now, the movie is getting some major attention and even making its way to theatres around San Diego. Although Ruta Madre has had a successful turn around the film festival circuit, the theatrical release comes at a critical time in the political relationship between the U.S. and Mexico. It also confronts the issue many Latinos in America face: self- and social-identity."It reflects the feeling of many Latinos, especially Mexicans, who have emigrated or were born here, but who have not they feel neither from here nor from there,” director and screenwriter Agustín Casta?eda said in a 2016 interview.The film, called Ruta Madre, follows Daniel, a young American singer who leaves his home in Chula Vista to embark on a spiritual road trip after his first love Daisy breaks his heart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of Trevor Heitmann the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly.Heitmann also died. A neighbor, who doesn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years, "he was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal."RELATED: 'The Rock' sends message to grieving SD family"He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann, who was known on Twitter as "McSkillet," started getting into on line video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.RELATED: Statement from driver's family in fatal crashShe also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed to 10News that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 4059

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of women is trying to appeal the decision by a judge to release the 'Bolder than Most' rapist, Alvin Quarles. Quarles is set to be released in Jacumba Hot Springs by Nov. 30. The women, including two of his victims, created a petition called Your Voice has Power. They are collecting signatures to be delivered to District Attorney Summer Stephan's office. Cynthia Medina and Mary Taylor were both assaulted by Quarles in the late 1980s. They are worried that he will re-offend when he's released. "He will re-offend. I fear for your daughter, your sister, your grandmother, your mother, your boyfriend, your son," said Medina. Judge David Gill ordered the 56-year-old's release at a hearing on October 12th. He will be forced to wear a GPS tracker. Quarles earned his nickname because authorities said he attacked women at knifepoint while they slept and often forced his victim's male partner to watch or participate in the sex crimes. Jacumba Hot Springs residents call the release outrageous, saying it's not the first time a sexual predator has been released into their community. "It's become the junkyard for these terrible criminals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was rescued from the top of a section of the border wall in Otay Mesa Tuesday.Cal Fire firefighters were called to a section of barrier in Otay Mesa just before 6 a.m. Crews arrived to find one person stuck on top of the border wall structure.Crews used a 35-foot ladder to reach the man and assist him down. No injuries were reported.Tuesday's rescue comes more than a month after San Diego Fire-Rescue firefighters and Border Patrol agents helped rescue three people stuck on top of a portion of the border wall in Otay Mesa. 560

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heart transplant saved his life but took away a San Diego doctor's ability to treat his patients. That is until technology gave him that back too. "I can't be around sick people because the immunosuppressant medications I have to take for the rest of my life will cause me to get sick much more easily," said Dr. Murray Alsip.For five long months, Dr. Alsip sat in the ICU, waiting for a heart. He'd been living with a serious heart condition for 17 years. After several false alarms, his call finally came. The doctor would soon receive 20-year-old Mathieu Bergeron's heart; the young man died tragically in a skateboarding accident.
