SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The 10-day Sturgis motorcycle rally held in August led to more than 266,000 new coronavirus cases, according to a new study from San Diego State University.The study, released this week, says upwards of 460,000 people converged on Sturgis, a South Dakota city of 7,000, causing a bump in Coronavirus infections across the US. "Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 'super spreader,'" said the study, which did conclude that the rally was a super spreader event.Researchers from San Diego State's Center for Health Economics and Policy Study used anonymized cell phone data to track where attendees came from, then traced it back to their counties. They found that the counties that had the highest numbers of Sturgis attendees saw a 7% to 12% increase in coronavirus cases. The study also said that CDC data shows that cases in Meade County, South Dakota, where the rally is held, increased 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population a month after the event started. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The discovery of suspicious packages near a downtown San Diego building prompted evacuations, but the boxes were later determined to be harmless.Authorities were called an area near the intersection of 6th Avenue and B Street at around 8:30 a.m. after several white boxes were found and deemed suspicious.The WeWork building through the 13th floor was evacuated and traffic lanes were closed in a nearby area due to the investigation. San Diego Union-Tribune staff members, who occupy space in the building, were forced to evacuate, 10News learned."We’ve seen some different tragedies in newsrooms around the country so I don’t think this is 100% a surprise for any newsroom to face something like this. It's a way for companies like Uber and Lyft to push back against California's Assembly Bill 5, which classifies drivers as employees with benefits instead of independent contractors.The gig companies are fighting the state in court, so they haven't been following those rules since the law went into effect on Jan. 1. Now, the fate of drivers will be in the hands of California voters on Nov. 3.The Yes on 22 campaign is backed by Uber, Lyft, and Doordash.It would classify drivers as independent contractors.Drivers could work towards a stipend to help purchase their own health insurance.They would also get some hourly pay, but only during what's called "engaged time." Yes on 22 says engaged time starts from the moment a driver accepts a ride until they drop the passenger off. It does not include time drivers spend waiting for their next passenger."If you were to compensate for all the time the driver spent on an app, you'd have to force them to accept every ride that comes across which would eliminate their flexibility to choose when they want to work and how long they want to work," said Vetter.Driver Al Porche says that's exactly why he's voting yes."Times are great right now," said Porche. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The brother-in-law of a woman killed in a murder-suicide in Paradise Hills spoke to 10News about her relationship with the father of her young sons.On the morning of Nov. 16, 29-year-old Sabrina Rosario and her four sons were shot by the boys' father in a home on Flintridge Drive, according to San Diego police.Rosario and three of her sons died, and the boys' father -- identified as 31-year-old Jose Valdivia -- shot himself to death after killing the family members.As of Sunday afternoon, Rosario's 9-year-old son, Ezequiel, was in an induced coma at Rady Children's Hospital.RELATED: Parents, 3 children killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicideKarl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law, told 10News, "No one thinks it's going to happen until it's happened."Albright said he has so many questions about what led Valdivia to gun down his wife and children. "He wanted it back. And he tried to, the love way, and then he tried the fear way, and he tried every way in between to try to break through, but she stood her ground."Albright said Valdivia's threatening texts and stalker behavior escalated six months ago when he bragged about purchasing a gun.Albright explained Valdivia would tell Rosario, "I'm going to come over and kill myself in front of you guys. I'm going to kill you guys, then kill myself."Rosario told him that he sounded like the boy who cried wolf, according to Albright.A records search shows two cases of domestic violence in 2019. On Nov. 15, police said Rosario spent the whole day at court obtaining a restraining order against her husband.When he called that night, she told him she had no other choice. He never called back.Albright said she told him that their problems would be solved, and her children would be safe."Even what they were living in, and what she was going through in the house, she had an umbrella over the kids, and it never fazed them," Albright said.Instead, the next morning, police said the children's father came into the granny flat on Flintridge Drive and shot his wife and four children in the head before shooting himself.Rosario and 3-year-old Enzi died at the home. Five-year-old Zuriel, 9-year-old Ezequiel, and 11-year-old Zeth were rushed to the hospital. Zuriel and Zeth did not make it.Life will never be the same for relatives who live next door."Now that Thanksgiving is coming up and Christmas.
