Hurricane Lane weakened as it marched toward Hawaii, but it's list of life-threatening calamities is still going strong. The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm Thursday, even as it unleashed torrential rainfall, flooding and landslides over parts of Hawaii's Big Island, along with dangerous surf and high winds. The conditions continued early Friday.Lane is forecast to bring even more damage as its center gets closer Friday and Saturday. While it's unclear whether the islands will get a direct hit, the hurricane will bring "significant and life-threatening flash flooding and landslides," the National Weather Service said. The center of the hurricane "will move over, or dangerously close" to parts of Hawaii islands Friday, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. It was about 230 miles (370 km) south of Honolulu early Friday, and could become the first major cyclone to make landfall in the state in 26 years.Track the storm here"Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is expected to remain a hurricane as it approaches the islands," the center said.Hawaii Islands include Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the island of Hawaii, which is often referred to as the Big Island. 1232

If you are planning on getting on a plane for Thanksgiving travel, the TSA has reminders about what you can and cannot bring onboard.A mask is a must; several airlines require a face covering from ticket check-in, to the gate and onboard the plane.A few must nots include cooking spray, cooking fuel, lighter fluid, butane, propane, lighters, alcohol over 140 proof, British Christmas crackers, party poppers and other firecrackers or fireworks. What about those delicious Thanksgiving foods and treats? It depends.“If it’s a solid item, then it can go through a checkpoint. However, if you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it or pour it, and it’s larger than 3.4 ounces, then it should go in a checked bag,” the TSA recommends as general guidance.Things that can be carried on the plane, and brought through TSA screening, include baked goods (homemade or store bought), meat (cooked or uncooked), casseroles, vegetables, candy and spices.Foods that should be packed safely in your checked bag include cranberry sauce, gravy (homemade or in a can/jar), wine or champagne, and jams or jellies. If you have questions about specific items, the TSA has a website to check, called “what can I bring.” 1209

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte has issued subpoenas for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch.Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican who is retiring, is requesting private depositions from Comey on December 3 and Lynch on December 4. House Republicans have been investigating FBI actions in the 2016 campaign, but that probe will end when Democrats take over the committee in January.Comey, who has previously rejected the committee's request for him to appear privately before the GOP-led inquiry, reiterated his position soon after the subpoenas became public."Happy Thanksgiving. Got a subpoena from House Republicans. I'm still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a 'closed door' thing because I've seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion. Let's have a hearing and invite everyone to see," Comey tweeted.David Kelly, an attorney for Comey, said Thursday that his client will fight the order in court."While the authority for congressional subpoenas is broad, it does not cover the right to misuse closed hearings as a political stunt to promote political as opposed to legislative agendas," Kelly said.Lynch has not yet commented publicly about the subpoenas. After the House Judiciary Committee signaled earlier this month their intention to subpoena Comey and Lynch, Rep. Jerry Nadler, the Democrat who is expected to chair the panel next year, criticized the move as "unfortunate.""Months ago, Director Comey and Attorney General Lynch both indicated their willingness to answer the Chairman's questions voluntarily. My understanding is that the Republicans have had no contact with either the director or the attorney general since," Nadler said last week.Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein remains another potential witness hanging over the GOP-led investigation. Conservatives on the panels demanded that Rosenstein appear to answer their questions about his reported remarks about wearing a wire to record the President and efforts to recruit Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. A scheduled meeting with Rosenstein last month was postponed and has not been rescheduled. 2215

If you were waiting for the annual Kardashian-Jenner clan Christmas photo, or perhaps an invite to their annual Christmas Eve party, they are not coming.Khloe Kardashian tweeted this week that “taking this pandemic seriously is a must” and family traditions are being canceled.COVID-19 cases are spiking around the country, and in California, much of the state is under stay-at-home orders because of the dwindling number of available ICU beds. These orders include the most populous areas of the state, like Southern California where the majority of the Kardashian family lives.Responding to a question on Twitter about whether they were doing a Christmas party, Khloe responded, “The Covid cases are getting out of control in CA. So we decided that we’re not doing a Christmas Eve party this year. It’s the first time we will not be having a Christmas Eve party since 1978 I believe. Health and safety first though! Taking this pandemic seriously is a must.” 968

How much do politicians and Super PACs value Facebook ahead of the 2018 midterms? In some cases, hundreds of millions of dollars.Facebook this week published its political ad archive report, which tracks every political ad bought on the platform between May 1 and Oct. 20, 2018. The social media platform reports that more than 1.5 million political ads were purchased during that time for a total of more than 0 million.President Donald Trump spent nearly million on Facebook ads during that span. The ads purchased were split between Trump's 2020 campaign and the Trump Make America Great Again Committee — a joint fundraising committee between Trump's campaign committee and the RNC.But even Trump was outspent by Texas Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke. The Democrat spent .3 million on Facebook between May and October. By comparison, O'Rourke's opponent Ted Cruz spent about 0,000 on Facebook during that same time period. It's no secret that O'Rourke has relied heavily on social media in his push to turn Texas blue. Over the summer, he got a bump from a viral video that showed him explaining why he supports NFL players kneeling for the national anthem. One version of the video has been viewed 46 million times.Despite O'Rourke's heavy spending, ABC News' FiveThirtyEight still gives Cruz an edge in the polls with a 7 in 9 chance that he is re-elected.Though she is not up for re-election this fall, California Sen. Kamala Harris was also among the politicians that spent big on Facebook, buying nearly 17,000 ads for more than million. Harris is rumored to be eying a run for President in 2020.JB Pritzker, a Chicago businessman who is running for governor of Illinois as a Democrat, spent nearly million on Facebook. FiveThirtyEight gives him an 11 in 12 chance of being elected governor. ExxonMobil, the oil and gas giant, spent the most on political Facebook ads among corporations in 2018, pouring nearly million into 1,700 ads. A search through Facebook's archives shows most of the company's most recent ads oppose Colorado Proposition 112 — a proposition that, if passed, would require oil and gas developments to be at least 2,500 feet from occupied buildings, parks, creeks, and other "vulnerable areas." Oil companies have argued the restrictions would make fracking and oil extraction in Colorado too difficult and expensive. Finally, despite calls for President Donald Trump's impeachment from some Democrats in the face of the Mueller investigation, Congressional leadership on the left has largely chosen not to campaign on the promise of impeachment. But that hasn't stopped wealthy Democratic activists from campaigning for impeachment on their own.Tom Steyer, a longtime Democratic donor ran nearly 6,000 ads on his page paid for by "Need to Impeach", a pro-impeachment fund started by Steyer. The fund is not affiliated with any Democratic candidates. Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @alexhider. 3028
