For a fourth straight night, protests are taking place in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as demonstrators demand justice for Jacob Blake, a man shot in the back by police during a Sunday confrontation.The protests are taking place hours after a 17-year-old Illinois boy was arrested and charged with shooting three protesters in the city on Tuesday night. Two of those protesters died, the third was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.To the west, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has requested help from the National Guard following unrest in his city. The protests are related to a Wednesday shooting death that was rumored to have involved police officers. After video of the incident was shared on social media, rioting and looting took place at a local mall.However, the Minneapolis Police Department released footage Wednesday that they say showed the shooting was self-inflicted.The nationwide protests are also taking place hours after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court, citing frustration with continued police brutality. Several other pro sports teams, including the MLB's Milwaukee Brewers, also took part in the strike.Blake was shot at least seven times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey as he entered his car after officers were called over a "domestic dispute." Following economic shutdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and with the US still dealing with the spread forthe pandemic, experts from the UCLA foresee a US economic depression into 2023.The researchers say that unemployment levels of 10% could persist into the fall, and 6% unemployment could remain through the end of 2022.US unemployment was below 4% earlier this year."To call this crisis a recession is a misnomer. We are forecasting a 42% annual rate of decline in real GDP for the current quarter, followed by a 'Nike swoosh' recovery that won't return the level of output to the prior fourth quarter of 2019 peak until early 2023," writes UCLA Anderson Forecast senior economist David Shulman in an essay titled "The Post-COVID Economy."The researchers note that the economy has already hit rock bottom. For anyone who used to play with slot cars as a child, Sweden's new electrified road might bring back some memories.In the first of its kind, the Scandinavian country is trialling the world's first public road which allows electric vehicles to recharge while driving. Similar to a slot-car track, vehicles are able to connect to an electric rail that's embedded into the road.Sweden has a goal of achieving a completely fossil fuel free vehicle fleet by 2030, so this electrified road is part of several projects the Swedish Transport Administration has created to develop and test technologies that may be able to help the country reach its target.In this particular project, 'eRoadArlanda', electricity is transferred via a movable arm that attaches to the tracks built into the middle of the road. While the system is designed with the capacity to feed heavier vehicles such as trucks, it's also developed to work for cars and buses.When vehicles approach the track, a sensor from the car or truck detects the electrified rail and the movable arm lowers from underneath the vehicle and inserts into the rail. The arm has been designed to be flexible, providing the car, or truck, the freedom to move around the road without disconnecting."One of the most important issues of our time is the question of how to make fossil-free road transportation a reality," Hans S?ll, chairman of the eRoadArlanda says."We now have a solution that will make this possible, which is amazing. Sweden is at the cutting edge of this technology, which we now hope to introduce in other areas of the country and the world."The track stretches along two kilometers (1.2 miles) and has been installed on public road "893" just 30 minutes outside of Stockholm.The eRoad has many advantages, S?ll says. If implemented it will mean electric vehicle batteries can be smaller -- and therefore lighter -- because they won't need to retain as much charge, the vehicles will then be cheaper to manufacture and will ultimately be more sustainable.For a heavy truck to be 100% electric, he explains, it would need a battery that weighs 40 tonnes. But if technology like the eRoad was readily available, the truck's battery would be able to weigh as little as 600 kilograms.It would also fix a wider issue that many electric vehicle owners face: The worry and inconvenience of keeping vehicles charged."Today you're not 100% sure how far you can go with your battery but if you have a combination of electric roads you will feel a little bit more confident that you'll get where you want to go," S?ll says.The technology is also safe and adverse weather such as rain, snow and ice should not cause any major issues thanks to draining and usual maintenance. The electricity also isn't a risk to humans or animals."There's no electricity at the surface and the rail is only electrified if an actual authorized vehicle is passing, so if you don't have an electric vehicle that's authorized to use the electricity, the electricity will not be turned on at all -- it will not be on 24/7."There will also be plenty of signage around the area indicating the road is electrified and the system is equipped with safety circuits.S?ll says while the new project cost €6.4 million (.7 million) to develop, if it were more widely implemented across the country it would eventually work out less than €1 million (.2 million) per kilometer to build.That is, if the government decides to implement it nationally."The Government wants to test one or two additional technologies ... that will then be evaluated in two years or so, (and) after that they will pick out one of those technologies (that have been tested) to build a longer pilot stretch that will be between 20 and 40 kilometers," he says.For now, the eRoad will be used and trialled for two years by a truck carrying freight in order to determine how well the innovation works under various weather conditions and in conjunction with normal road traffic.The-CNN-Wire 3992

FORT YATES, N.D. ¨C After years of fighting over the Dakota Access Pipeline, the Stand Rock Sioux Tribe feels vindicated now that a judge has ruled it be shut down pending an environmental review.John Buckley was on the front lines of the Dakota Access Pipeline protests, which started almost four years ago.Buckley lives on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation just south of Bismarck, North Dakota. Four years ago, he was fighting for his right to drink clean water.¡°If that pipeline ever leaks, that¡¯s going to cause a major problem,¡± he said.The pipeline carries hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil from western North Dakota to an oil terminal in Illinois. It crosses the Missouri River just a few miles north of the Standing Rock reservation.¡°Like the old ones say, Mini Wiconi, water is life. Without water, we can¡¯t survive, as humans. So, it¡¯s a way of life, it¡¯s our life,¡± said Mike Faith, the tribal chairman of Standing Rock Sioux.The tribe's biggest issue was the Army Corp of Engineers and Energy Transfer Partners, the company that owns the pipeline, never completed an environmental impact statement.¡°The judge I think made the right decision, as far as telling the court, get an environmental impact statement. The EA, the little blanket resolution that allowed the environmental assessment. That hurt a lot of cultural resources, it did danger to a lot of species, it¡¯s a danger in our existence,¡± said Faith.That disagreement sparked seven months of protests and drew people from all over the world. Thousands gathered and squared off with police. The clashes sometimes turned violent.Eventually, law enforcement cleared the protesters and oil began flowing through the pipeline. But that didn¡¯t mean the fight was over.¡°Appeals, appeals, appeals. Standing Rock is here, we didn¡¯t go away. We¡¯re still here.¡±Three years after the first barrels of North Dakota crude started moving through the pipeline, a federal judge ordered an environmental impact study needed to be completed. The judge ordered that the pipeline will be drained of oil by the beginning of August. Since that ruling, the US District Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. has granted an administrative stay on draining the pipeline while the appeal of the ruling plays out.¡°The decision by Judge Boasberg last week, last Monday, took us just completely by surprise," said Ron Ness, the President of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.Ness represents the oil industry in the state. He says there are huge economic impacts from shutting down the pipeline.¡°For every dollar in North Dakota that we get less for a barrel of oil, that¡¯s like million a year to the state of North Dakota,¡± he said.And he says shutting the pipeline down means more oil on trucks and trains.¡°Prior to DAPL, we were putting almost 800,000 barrels of Bakken oil on rail cars, moving them to various markets. This pipeline not only offered a safety component, it took trucks off the road in counties across western North Dakota,¡± said Ness.But for the people of Standing Rock, this fight has always been about respect and preserving the environment¡°The federal government, the Army Corps of Engineers, did not do true government to government consultation. Fentanyl is now the most commonly used drug involved in drug overdoses, according to a new government report. The latest numbers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics say that the rate of drug overdoses involving the synthetic opioid skyrocketed by about 113% each year from 2013 through 2016.The number of total drug overdoses jumped 54% each year between 2011 and 2016. In 2016, there were 63,632 drug overdose deaths.According to Wednesday's report, which analyzed death certificates for drug overdose deaths between 2011 and 2016, fentanyl was involved in nearly 29% of all overdose deaths in 2016. In 2011, fentanyl was involved in just 4% of all drug fatalities. At the time, oxycodone was the most commonly involved drug, representing 13% of all fatal drug overdoses.From 2012 to 2015, heroin became the most frequently involved drug in overdose deaths. In 2011, the number of fatal heroin overdoses was 4,571, or 11% of all drug fatalities. In 2016, that number more than tripled to 15,961 deaths, representing a quarter of all drug overdoses that year.The authors of the new study also found that most overdoses involved more than one drug. In 2016, 2 in 5 cocaine-related overdose deaths also involved fentanyl. Nearly one-third of fentanyl-related overdoses also involved heroin.
