A Pennsylvania woman is mourning the loss of her 12-year-old after claiming that the dog was mauled last week by another dog during a grooming appointment at a PetSmart, WNEP-TV reported. Betty Miller of Scranton told WNEP that after dropping off her dog named Bichon Brewster at PetSmart's grooming salon, she got a call from a veterinarian, who delivered the awful news. Brewster was killed after getting attacked by another dog.After the mauling, Brewster was taken to the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center, but was dead on arrival. The veterinarians told WNEP that it attempted resuscitation, but failed. Now, Miller is wanting answers as to why this happened. "We called corporate," Miller told WNEP. "They did not reach out to us, and I was very angry about that. Why would you want to bring a pit bull past a small dog who's really just bait? A software flaw is being blamed for showing a positive COVID-19 test result incorrectly for more than two dozen tests. University of Kentucky laboratory scientists say they were inspecting and reviewing raw data from a testing platform when they became concerned about discrepancies in the data. They believe the testing platform, Thermo Fisher, which was authorized for emergency use by the FDA, had a software flaw that might result in false positives.After re-testing the samples using another platform, scientists confirmed that the tests initially reported as positive for COVID-19 were negative. The flaw was only found in one of the four testing platforms that UK's clinical laboratory uses.Every patient who received incorrect results is being notified about the issue. No negative results changed. UK HealthCare also has notified Thermo Fisher Scientific and the FDA."For anyone tested at UK HealthCare, it is important to know that the vast majority of results have not changed," said UK Executive Vice President for Health Affairs Dr. Mark Newman. "Since these very astute employees discovered this issue, we have taken extensive measures to validate each test in question and worked diligently to contact all parties – the vendor, the FDA -- and most importantly, our patients and providers."UK HealthCare says they are working with local health departments and the Kentucky Department of Public Health to correct all data."UK's clinical laboratory has performed more than 30,000 COVID-19 tests since March and only a very small percentage of tests have been affected by this software defect," Newman said. A poll commissioned by CNN and conducted by SSRS showed a majority of Americans are embarrassed by how the US has responded to the coronavirus pandemic, and are angry about the way things are going in the nation. The poll conducted August 12 through 15 was released on Wednesday.The poll surveyed 1,108 Americans, 31% of whom are Democrats, 27% of whom are Republicans, and the remaining 42% being either independent or a third-party supporter.The poll has a 3.7% margin of error.Here are the highlights:68% of Americans are embarrassed by America’s coronavirus response, compared to 28% who say they’re proud51% said they’re “very angry” about the direction of the country; 27% said they’re somewhat angry57% said there should not be in-person learning in their community, compared to 37% who said their local schools should be open for in-person learning49% said that pro sports should not be played, compared to 46% who say games should be playedAs far as marks on President Donald Trump, 51% approve of his handling of the economy, compared to 44% who disapprove. While most Americans approve of his handling of the economy, 62% said he could be doing more to combat the coronavirus.The number of Americans who are personally impacted by the virus has also increased in recent months. When the poll was last conducted in June, only 40% of Americans said they personally knew someone who was infected by the virus. A sergeant involved in the search for a missing hiker in Zion National Park says there are several discrepancies he sees in the case of her 12-day survival in the park.Holly Courtier went missing while hiking in the park on October 6. A rescue effort involving the national park’s team and others, including K-9 teams and trained investigators, found Courtier on October 18 after a credible tip of a possible sighting.Her family said Courtier hit her head, became disoriented, and was able to stay near a “water source” in the park.In an interview with ABC4 in Salt Lake City, Sgt. Darrell Cashin says he finds some “discrepancies and questions that do not add up.”Cashin is a liaison with Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, a job he’s had for about nine years, in addition he says he has 25 years experience on search and rescue teams.One thing he says didn’t add up was the water source. Park officials say Courtier was found along the Virgin River, but Cashin says that river was likely not drinkable or at least would have caused her to get sick.In August, Zion National Park officials sent out a warning to all visitors to avoid contact with the Virgin River “until further notice” because of levels of cyanobacteria from a toxic algal bloom.“If she had been drinking that water, unless she had some really high immune system, she would’ve been very, very ill and probably unable to come out on her own,” Cashin told ABC4. “She either took a lot of water with her or had another clean water source that was near here, but the Virgin River is not that source.”CNN reports the family told them Courtier was only able to take a few steps before collapsing. However, Zion National Park officials report she was able to walk out of the park on her own with minimal assistance. She was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out and stayed the night.In the interview with CNN, Courtier’s family does not clarify if the water source was potable, but they did say Courtier was without food while she was lost in the park.Cashin alleges there are also questions about her decision to go on the hike. A North County resident claims her neighbor, a local politician, is using his power to target her.She said Oceanside Deputy Mayor Chuck Lowery is getting preferential treatment when he files a code complaint because of his position at the city.Team 10 discovered Lowery has a well-documented history of filing complaints and turned up emails he sent voicing his concerns about her short-term rental property.“I don't believe that it's right that the deputy mayor would utilize his political position to contact other departments and the head of those departments to start a harassment campaign,” said Alexandra McIntosh.McIntosh purchased her home back in 2012 as part of her retirement plan.Shortly after she bought it, she turned the property into full-time, short-term vacation rental.She said the income brought by the rental offsets the house payments and helps the city of Oceanside make money.“It has been fully booked since early March,” she said.McIntosh told 10News she stays at the property when it isn’t booked and plans to move in after she retires.To help with storage, McIntosh said she put a shed up in the backyard."I paid to have them custom make this to conform with the City of Oceanside,” she said. “It was something that would go along with my house.”According to the City of Oceanside’s website, the shed could be no larger than 120 square feet, or it needed a permit.McIntosh said she called to verify that is the case. However, after it went up, there was a complaint.Complaint records from the city state, “CBC 105.1 Permits Required - Submit plans/building permit application to Building Division for review. If any work requiring a permit is in progress, it must immediately cease until a valid building permit is issued.”There were also questions whether or not McIntosh was using the shed as an extra room, something she denied. For a period of time, it was posted on Airbnb as a third room.“I’m not using it as a habitable space,” she said.After a July visit to the property, a representative from the code department determined the shed violates the city's zoning ordinance and will need to be brought into compliance.McIntosh disagrees with the decision telling Team 10 that’s not what someone in the department initially told her. She plans to fight that decision. According to documents provided by the City of Oceanside, the person who complained was listed as Chuck Lowery.McIntosh said Lowery is one of her neighbors.City records show it’s the not first time Lowery has been listed as the complainant on a city code violation complaint.Team 10 uncovered emails from March 2017 when Lowery had a grievance with barking dogs in his neighborhood.The email chain shows he sent an email to the Oceanside city manager writing in part, “Can the City notify the OWNERS [sic] that they’re renting these places to people who are up at all hours whenever they want (hey, they’re on vacation) AND they leave their dogs barking, untended, for days on end?The neighbor sent me an email again today about the barking dog. I was here and I heard it too. The addresses of the two houses with short-term renters and dogs are XX and XX. It’s NOT worth the TOT tax but I sure hope these two people get noise complaints. I can get the other neighbors to sign at least one.”For context TOT means Transient Occupancy Tax, a tax collected by the city on short-term rentals. All hotels and vacation rentals in the City of Oceanside pay an assessment of 1.5 percent of their room rental revenue.The email chain shows the city manager offered to send the notice out herself writing in part, “I’m prepared to do it but am unsure of who does what between code and OPD.” The emails show she eventually has the code department do it.A code department manager responded in an email: "I’m never too busy for the City Manager. Your concerns are first priority. They will go out today.”Emails obtained by Team 10 show a few days after complaining about the dogs, Lowery wrote about another neighbor’s property calling their tenants “disgusting.”This time from a city email account the deputy mayor requests that "the letter from Code to the owners and agent at XX be ramped up and that their permit for vacation party rentals be denied or revoked or whatever."A day later an Oceanside employee writes to the code manager: “This is the second complaint from Councilmember Lowery.
