The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded above 30,000 points for the first time Tuesday. The crest came as investors were encouraged by the latest progress on developing coronavirus vaccines and news that the transition of power in the U.S. to President-elect Joe Biden will finally begin.Traders were also encouraged by news that Biden had selected Janet Yellen, a widely respected former Federal Reserve chair, as treasury secretary. The Dow rose more than 400 points, or 1.4%, to trade just over 30,000 midday Tuesday. The S&P 500 index, which has a far greater impact on 401(k) accounts than the Dow, rose 1.3%.Shortly after the Dow crested, President Donald Trump delivered remarks at the White House, congratulating his administration and the people of the U.S.“The stock market has just broken 30,000, never been broken, that number, that’s a sacred number, 30,000. Nobody thought they’d ever see it,” said Trump. “That’s the 9th time since the beginning of 2020 and it’s the 48th time that we’ve broken records during the Trump administration. And I just want to congratulate all the people within the administration that work so hard. And most importantly, I want to congratulate the people of our country, because there are no people like you.”Like others, Trump attributed the success of the stock market to the promising news that multiple vaccines are proving to be effective and headed for FDA approval.“Despite everything that’s taken place with the pandemic, I’m very thrilled with what’s happened on the vaccine front,” said Trump. “That’s been absolutely incredible. Nothing like that has ever happened medically and I think people are acknowledging that and it’s having a big effect.”Trump, who often speaks for long periods of time and has sparred with the media in the past, kept Tuesday’s remarks short and didn’t take questions as reporters asked him why he hasn’t conceded to Biden for the good of the country.Watch the president’s remarks below: 1979

The Defense Department has temporarily grounded all of its 245 F-35 fighter jets for inspection of a potentially faulty engine part in the wake of last month's crash in South Carolina.Initial data from the ongoing investigation into the September 28 crash indicates a fuel tube may have been faulty. In response, all US military F-35s will be inspected as well as F-35s operated by US allies."If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced. If known good fuel tubes are already installed, then those aircraft will be returned to flight status," the Defense Department said in a statement.Inspections are expected to be completed within the next two days, the statement said, and a defense official told CNN some aircraft have already been returned to flight status. The initial assessment is the faulty tube may be on older models of the aircraft, but all are being inspected. 911
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has confirmed a report by The Associated Press that some of the service members who deployed to Washington, D.C., last month in response to civil unrest were issued bayonets. Army Gen. Mark A. Milley confirmed the information in a letter sent to two Democratic U.S. representatives last month. The Pentagon letter comes as the AP also reports that members of the 82nd Airborne who deployed to Washington were not trained in riot response. The soldiers were scheduled to learn riot control tactics once arriving. The soldiers were ultimately not used and were sent back to their home base. 638
The Democratic National Committee chairman assured supporters Thursday that a scaled-down convention would go on as scheduled in August in Milwaukee, Wisconsin."From the very beginning of this pandemic, Democrats have put the health and safety of the American people first. Unlike Trump, we followed the science, listened to doctors and public health experts, and worked through plans to protect lives," DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a series of tweets. "That's how we made the decision to hold a responsible convention that will bring our country together, ensure our delegates can take care of official business without risk to public health, and still shine a spotlight on our host community of Milwaukee."In June, DNC leaders announced plans to transform the convention amid the pandemic, moving it from the Fiserv Forum, a 17,000-seat arena, to Wisconsin Center, a convention center. The DNC also advised state delegates to not travel to Milwaukee.Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden still plans to accept the nomination in Milwaukee. The DNC is slated to begin Aug. 17. 1089
