"Be prepared" is the motto of the Boy Scouts of America, so when COVID-19 hit, pack leaders quickly pivoted to a virtual platform to help boy and cub scouts finish their year requirements. This fall, though, the organization is working on some new efforts to keep kids safely involved during the pandemic."Schools having a virtual start and then delaying the start at least two or three weeks, in most cases. It has slowed down the year-to-year comparison for children joining and we think that, to some extent, we will not recover completely on the number of children on a year-to-year extent," said Tracy Techau, Scout Executive of the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Boys Scouts of America. Techau says besides yard signs, most scout recruiting turned digital this year.Techau says scouting organizations across the country are finding creative ways to get children involved and outdoors while still adhering to government regulations for social distancing. "It varies from community to community. There are certain states that have greater restrictions for social activities," said Techau.Pack leader Lindsey Paris always starts off the scouting year with her den with a bottle rocket building and launching activity. This year it will look a little different. "We had a digital tutorial build. Bring all your stuff up to Zoom, we’ll build the rockets together and then were going to put every family in a parking spot and when it's your turn, approach the launch pad and try to get that shot. So, we’ll be around other families but we’ll be wearing our masks," said Paris.Scouting leaders are also hoping to safely bring children the socialization that they've been missing. Especially if the kids are in virtual learning this fall. "I think it's important to see your friends, catch up with them. I know I need that socialization. Just Zooms with my friends and family, I think it's the same for them," said Paris."Children are missing their friends. They're not developing the social skills, the group dynamics, the social norming that is so important for children. It's just not really happening right now for children since schools are virtual. Cub Scouts offers that experience," said Techau. Techau believes activities like scouting are crucial during this time."Scouting is more important now than ever for several reasons. First, the whole motto of Scouts is to be prepared. And all of us want to be prepared as we work through the situations of COVID-19 and whatever happens this fall, this winter, next spring. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Enlly Gutierrez knows about hard times. The single mother of three is a client at Solutions for Change, a Vista organization aimed at helping homeless families. Gutierrez is one of many turning their lives around through the program, which takes 1,000 days. Gutierrez is more than halfway complete and making great strides. Her family's story started in 2017. It is a story Gutierrez doesn't mind sharing but still has an emotional time reliving. Gutierrez and her family were homeless in the streets of Escondido. They would spend their days and nights at the hotels and restaurants along Mission Boulevard near Centre City Parkway. They weren't just homeless; Gutierrez was also battling drug addiction.COMPLETE COVERAGE: Facing It Together: Edge of Homelessness"We would be walking to (Jack in the Box) or anywhere in these streets," she recalled. "We'd be walking with them on one stroller, and I had three of them, late at night, when it was cold. And I was just trying to get to a place to put them to sleep." "We had hotels, when I had my kids, we slept in Mount Vernon a lot," she added. "It was really hard. I'd have my sister, me, her kids, and my kids. We didn't care about the conditions we had them in. We had people in and out of the rooms. We only cared about getting high. It was just a lot of chaos." Two months of living homeless and using drugs caused her to lose her kids. "CPS decided I wasn't a fit parent because I was putting them in dangerous situations," Gutierrez said. "That was really hard. When I got them taken away, I ended up alone. I ended up walking the streets at three in the morning, not having where to sleep. I stayed behind the dumpsters behind Denny's and laid in my head and my backpack. And I just fell asleep, and I got so tired. That's when I knew I hit rock bottom." It was at that point, Gutierrez decided she needed change. It started with her kicking addiction at the Family Recovery Center. "That part was really hard for me because I've never been through treatment," she said. "But I looked It up online, and I was like, 'I'm just going to give it a shot; if I really want my kids back, if I really want my life back I have to start somewhere." It took her five months to get clean. But it wasn't enough to get her family back. "I spoke to CPS, and they're like, 'Look, Enlly, either you go out here and do the same thing, you're not going to get your kids back, or you decide to go to a program." That's how she ended up at Solutions for Change. The program requires its clients to be clean and creates an environment of structure and accountability through classes, work training, and support. But ultimately, staff members say success depends on the determination and readiness of the individual. Gutierrez was ready. She was determined to get her kids back. And she did. "They start seeing that she's going to work. She's showing up. She's not giving up," Gutierrez recalled. "That's when they're like, okay, Enlly is responsible. She's showing she wants her kids back, and I started getting reunification." Enlly has been reunited with her kids. She's also maintained several jobs. She currently works as a sales representative for Cricket Wireless, allowing her to pay for rent and provide for her family. "So now that we have a home, I'm able to be a mom, cook for them, provide for them. It's all worth it," Gutierrez said. "Just hearing them call me mom and feeling that love, and knowing that I'm needed, it's amazing." 3522

She's what Monat calls a Market Partner -- someone who sells their shampoo and other hair care products on the company's multi-level marketing platform, which is mostly through social media. Toni Miller is one of the stylists Monat is suing for defamation."What I am seeing with this product in particular, it's not normal," Miller observed after working with clients who'd used Monat.Monat claims people like Miller are engaged in a smear campaign designed to promote competing products. In their suit against her, they report 1,000 order cancellations in the last two months."When we tried to reason with our attackers who were bullying people online, bullying some of our market partners, bullying other customers and ridiculing them for using our product, we had to file a lawsuit to protect ourselves from the attacks," Grabowski said.But Miller says Monat is the bully. The company sent a letter to Posare salon, threatening to sue the owner if she didn't silence Toni or fire her. As for consumers, Grabowski says, "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. By the way, there is not a constitutional right to complain about a company. A company has a right to respond any way it wants to." The Federal Trade Commission's Consumer Review Fairness Act "Protects consumers' ability to share their honest opinions about a business' products, services or conduct in any forum, including social media." But that's not enough. This request for a restraining order against Monat was filed March 7 in South Florida, asking a court to protect consumers against Monat's "Threats, harassment and intimidation."Monat says one stylist has agreed to pay them to settle its claims against her. Miller is still fighting.
