HOUSTON, Texas – Fifty years ago, when the first man walked on the moon, most of the country was glued to a television set, watching in awe. It was a historic and captivating moment, made possible by people like Jerry Woodfill. “I, at Johnson Space Center in Houston, am the last engineer that worked directly on the Apollo mission to the moon,” said Woodfill. “I was the alarm system engineer.” There was only one alarm system engineer for the Apollo 11 mission. “John Kennedy put it like this, when he spoke before Congress on May 25, 1961, ‘we send a man to the moon and we want him to return home safely to the Earth,’” Woodfill said. “Now the guy that was responsible, I think, for returning him safely, that was my assignment.” It was a job well done, because the three astronauts that went to the moon for the first time, all made it back safely. Jerry Woodfill would go on after Apollo 11 to be a part of the Apollo 13 mission and continued to work for NASA for more than five decades. In fact, at 76 he is still working at the Johnson Space Center in Houston with no plan on retiring anytime soon. Part of the reason he wants to stick around at NASA is because of a seemingly new resurgence of excitement about space and there’s a new mission to go back to the moon. “In certain areas [going back to space this time] it’s more exciting,” said Woodfill. “Our technology level has so much advanced.” With better technology now, and more of an understanding of space, Woodfill, knows it is going to be easier to get a man and woman to the moon and the possibilities are greater. This time, the plan is stay on the moon longer, NASA is planning to have a satellite space center called Gateway orbit the moon. Astronauts could live on Gateway and go back and forth to the moon’s surface. There, this time around, astronauts will focus on a part of the moon’s surface where there are craters. In those craters, satellite imaging shows there is ice water. Astronauts hope to find that water, and other elements that could lead to a possible fuel source to head to Mars. Woodfill, who was a part of the first mission to the moon, hopes to still be at NASA for the first manned mission to Mars. “There’s something inside of me that says we can come up with something. That could make it doable. You know it the next 10 years. Something could happen,” he said. If it doesn’t happen while the Apollo mission alarm engineer is still around, he hopes the generation that gets to see a man on Mars will be as excited about it as he would be. “I thank the Lord that I was able to work for NASA and be involved in aerospace, and not just aerospace but all the technology that contributed to doing the things we’ve done,” said Woodfill. “There are 30,000 things from a pacemaker in your heart to an advanced hearing aid that came because we went to the moon.”There are likely to be thousands of more technological advances on earth as a result of NASA heading back to the moon again. 2999
When COVID-19 became a public health emergency this past spring, it caused widespread problems for supply chains that moved food from manufacturers to your local grocery store.Six months after the pandemic started, consumers are still finding several popular food items hard to find. The company that produces "Peeps" (Just Born in Pennsylvania) recently announced that it will not have Halloween or Christmas versions of the popular marshmallow treat this year. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias. The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently. The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash. Not only is it plentiful and cheap, but there could be produce problems coming soon as workers are not able to pick citrus and row crops, like lettuce and broccoli, on the West Coast due to the wildfires, added Tarantino. Some viewers asked why canned pumpkin is so hard to find?7 Eyewitness News contacted Libby's and received the following response:"The team in Illinois is currently working hard harvesting Libby’s pumpkins and canning for the upcoming season. We typically begin shipping to retailers around this time for bake season, so you can expect to see pumpkin back on shelves over the next few weeks."Wegmans also sent a statement regarding the shortage of some items:"There are certain products that are still in high demand, for example, cleaning supplies and paper products. While we continue to get shipments of these products to our stores, we are on allocation from the manufacturers. We have purchase limits on these high-demand products to best serve the needs of as many customers as possible."The National Grocers Association sent the following shopping tip:"Consumers should plan ahead of their trip to the store, make a list and purchase what they need for the time, as well as check on the store’s website or social media pages ahead of their trip as stores will communicate important information on product availability and additional tips." Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. Excel is now using new technology train a new generation of drivers. “What we decided to do a couple years ago is to purchase a simulator company,” Emery said. “Now we're building our own system to change and evolve how we train drivers.”Evolving to get more drivers to live life on the open road and keep on truckin'. 2726
For the last 30 years, Marina Tsaplina has taken insulin to survive. “I take anywhere between probably six to 10 injections per day, depending on what I need,” she says. “Certainly any time before I eat and any time I need to adjust my blood sugar.” Living with type 1 diabetes and no health insurance, Tsaplina bought a year’s supply of insulin in Canada, because she can't afford to buy it here in the U.S. “The insulin alone would be about from 0 to ,100,” she says. New research shows drug prices can vary greatly depending on the pharmacy. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund surveyed more than 250 pharmacies in 11 states on prices for 12 common drugs. It found consumers could save anywhere from 0 to ,000 a year, simply by shopping around. “On average, over nine times the lowest price could be charged for a prescription drug that many people take,” says Lance Kilpatrick with U.S. PIRG. The study found chain pharmacies like CVS tend to have higher prices than mom-and-pop pharmacies. “Eight of the 12 drugs that we surveyed, mom-and-pop shops and small chain pharmacies actually had less expensive prices than the big chains,” Kilpatrick says. That's why U.S. PIRG says you should compare at least five pharmacies and try shopping online. Sites like Goodrx.com helps consumers find the best prices in your area. Pharmacychecker.com connects with verified Canadian pharmacies, since Canadian drugs are often cheaper. Additionally, Blinkhealth.com offers good pricing for generic drugs. With 1 in 4 Americans struggling to afford their prescription drugs, a little legwork now can save you a lot of money in the long run. 1677
It’s a beautiful, sunny day in Fort Collins, Colorado. Maybe you want to take your shirt off. Well now, men and women both can show a little skin in the city. Or actually… anywhere in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Kansas or Oklahoma. That’s because of a recent court decision, one the city of Fort Collins decided not to fight. It’s a big deal for Brit Hoagland and many women who say it’s their right to wear or not wear a shirt. “Addressing small parts of inequality can make a big difference in how people are treated on a day to day basis, and I thought free the nipple was just one small step closer to how it should be,” said Hoagland. Brit, along with co-plaintiff Samantha Six, sued the city of Fort Collins for the right to go topless in public. It’s part of the #FreeTheNipple movement you might have seen trending on Instagram. Andy McNulty is their attorney and says the law is an attack on equal rights. “Any law that says, ‘Women are prohibited from,’ is unconstitutional and really just intolerable in a society that should treat women as equal to men,” said McNulty. “Everybody should be able to be comfortable on a hot day and if that means taking their shirt of so be it. No matter how you look, you should have the same freedom at the person next to you. And it’s also about equality,” said Hoagland. “They had been advocating for a while, trying to get the Fort Collins City Council to get rid of a female topless ban in Fort Collins. They’d been unsuccessful, and they wanted to see if we would be willing to represent them in a legal challenge to that ordinance,” said McNulty. After the courts ruled in favor of nudity, the city appealed to the federal 10th Circuit of Appeals. That court also ruled in favor of topless women. Fort Collins decided they were not going to try and win at the US Supreme Court. “I think the council as they articulated in their 4-3 vote, really just thought as a matter of priority, no guarantee of success or that the supreme court would even take it up, that the money was just better spent on other city priorities,” said Tyler Marr, deputy director of information for the city of Fort Collins. And that means laws banning women from being topless are not enforceable in all six states in the 10th District. “We made a huge impact way beyond Fort Collins, and we were just trying to start a conversation. And that conversation reached to so many more people. It’s a miraculous achievement I didn’t think I would see in my lifetime let alone so soon,” said Hoagland. But that’s not to say there aren’t some mixed feelings. “I guess as a woman, I mean, I do think we deserve equal rights in everything, so I guess that would count too. But I think if women do choose to do that, they might be asking for a little bit of trouble,” said Peg Williams of Boulder, Colorado. “Just seems like a contradictory of laws a woman can expose her breasts, but a man can’t go in an alley behind a dumpster and take a pee without coming up on criminal charges,” said George Langel of Fort Collins. However, it’s not all bare breasts and roses. In 2017 the 7th circuit of appeals ruled to uphold Chicago’s topless ban. That means there’s two districts in the country with opposing views on the matter. If more lawsuits pop up around the country, the supreme court may have to rule on the issue after all. McNulty says it’s an important issue about equality and how we look at women. “The idea that women’s bodies are purely sexual is something that, it was perpetuated by this law. By getting rid of this law, we are saying women are more than just a sexual object and their bodies are more than just a sexual object. They’re human beings just like men.” “Our win can show that even in other places that, there’s still hope, and that things can change maybe from a different angle,” said Hoagland. And they think that, is a battle worth fighting. 3927
