Watch streaming video in the player below:SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The journey has come to an end for hundreds of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S.A large caravan arrived in Tijuana within the last week and have waited until Sunday to cross the border into San Diego.Late Sunday afternoon, members of the caravan plan to turn themselves in to customs agents seeking asylum.Most of the roughly 400 migrants in the caravan are women and children who have been staying in shelters, seeking legal counsel before trying to cross the border.Border patrol agents released a statement Saturday saying several groups associated with the caravan have been illegally climbing a scrap metal border fence.The statement warned anyone with the caravan to “think before you act.” The Secretary of Homeland Security also said in a statement earlier this week that anyone seeking asylum “may be detained while their claims are adjudicated.”Protesters say the group is taking advantage of U.S. immigration laws. A group called San Diegans for Secure Borders plans to protest at Friendship Park.They say the migrants are unwelcome and that their claims for asylum are false. 1207

A Michigan State University trustee who pledged support for victims of sex abuse has opposed them repeatedly in courtrooms as a lawyer, an investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit has found.Trustee Dan Kelly was elected to the board of trustees in 2016 as the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal erupted.  His university bio touts 25 years experience as an attorney representing school districts.  In at least seven cases reviewed by WXYZ, Kelly represented districts accused of failing to protect students from sex abuse.Kelly has represented districts like Roseville, Dundee and, at least four times, Warren Consolidated Schools in sex abuse civil cases.Former Warren gym teacher James Kearly pleaded no contest to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges involving three young girls.  In 2004, Kearly and Warren Schools were sued by the victims’ parents, alleging the district ignored more than a decade’s worth of Kearly’s documented fondling.As abuse allegations stacked up, according to testimony, the district moved Kearly to a school that taught younger students in the hopes that he would be less attracted to underdeveloped elementary school girls.While there, three second grade girls said Kearly molested them.“He touched my privates, Mr. K,” testified one of his young victims. “Sometimes in the office and sometimes in the gym.”During trial, Kelly told jurors the district couldn’t be held responsible for Kearly’s actions and, while there was no excuse for what he did, “the touching was always on the outside of the clothing… was very brief and…there’s very strong evidence that (the girls) didn’t know that it was inappropriate when it occurred.”WXYZ shared Kelly’s words with Morgan McCaul, one of Larry Nassar’s victims.“That’s gross.  What you just read is gross,” she said. “When this is a leader and essentially the architect of campus climate, I don’t know how you can send your kids to Michigan State University and feel safe.”The jury in the Kearly case returned a .1 million verdict in favor of the victims.In 2006, Kelly defended a district accused of ignoring allegations that teacher Roderick Reese molested 11 elementary school girls. As is common in sex abuse cases, the plaintiffs filed their lawsuits as Jane Does. But Kelly filed a motion to have the young girls' names made public, saying that the case had already been tried in the press. WXYZ spoke with a parent of one of Reese’s victims, who was 12 when Kelly wanted her name unsealed.“It was kind of like, who’s on trial here?” the father said, who asked that we conceal his identity to protect his daughter. “It’s not my kid or the other parent’s children.”The judge denied Kelly’s motion. The case settled for an undisclosed amount and, in a criminal trial, the teacher was convicted of child molestation. 12 years later, the father of Reese’s victim hasn’t forgotten what Dan Kelly tried to do in court.“I was totally stunned,” he recalled. “Why would he want to do this to these children? They didn’t do anything wrong.”In a January trustees meeting, Kelly apologized to Nassar’s abuse survivors and said, until recently, he had viewed the Nassar scandal through the eyes of a lawyer.“In the back of my mind,” Kelly said, “I thought that this would be resolved in the litigation process.”Attorney Mick Grewal represents more than 80 of Nassar’s victims.“I think he viewed them as the opposition, not survivors,” Grewal said. “It’s clear to me that he’s not the right guy. It’s actually clear to me that everyone on the board is not the right guy or woman.”Dan Kelly declined an on-camera interview, but by phone said he believes he can be the best advocate for victims of Nassar’s abuse. Those that have faced with him in court aren’t so sure.“I don’t think he’s out to protect the victims, myself,” said the father whose daughter Kelly tried to name in court. “And being a defense lawyer, why would he? He’s out to protect the people he’s defending.”In a statement, Kelly said:"As a member of the MSU Board of Trustees, I am committed to working with Interim University President John Engler and the full Board in supporting the survivors of Dr. Nassar and addressing the challenges this matter has presented for the entire Michigan State University community.  Each Board member brings their experience and background from their past that will help the university and survivors move forward.  Because of the confidential nature of my work as a private sector attorney and my role as an MSU Trustee, it would be inappropriate for me to comment further." 4616

A new internal document shows the Transportation Security Administration's proposal to eliminate screening at more than 150 small to medium sized airports is just one of several cost-saving measures the agency is discussing.The document, which an agency source says TSA Administrator David Pekoske was briefed on last month, shows how the TSA could save more than 0 million in 2020.Among the proposed cuts listed in the document are a reduction in full-time air marshals, a reduction in the workforce at TSA headquarters, fewer reimbursements to airports for janitorial services at TSA checkpoints, cuts for benefits for new part-time employees and a 50% cut in reimbursements to state and local law enforcement agencies for use of their K-9 units.The TSA did not respond to multiple requests for comment.Spending cuts would have to be approved by Congress, which sets the TSA's budget. 902

A popular New Jersey restaurant is drawing criticism for a policy making underage customers pay an 18 percent tip for their order, the New York Post reported.The Wayne Hills Diner in Wayne, New Jersey is reportedly a popular spot for teenagers and children after school, but its management says that children don't always tip. That is why it has enforced a policy adding gratuity to underage customers, but not adults."My employees need to get paid. They don't work for free," the restaurant's manager told the Post. The restaurant says it is not trying to scare off young customers. "We love the kids. They've been coming for years. We're a family-owned business," the manager told the New York post. "There's too much publicity for nothing. But some parents think it is unfair to make children tip, while not making adults add gratuity."I was angry because I had been there the week before and I had been there with a group of five, some kids and some children, and I was not charged this gratuity," long-time customer Melissa Desch told WABC-TV.Desch said that her 11-year-old daughter spotted the added gratuity after she got her receipt. "He said that's policy because the kids run out and he feels that they don't tip well, and they don't know how to tip was the explanation," she told WABC. A toddler hanging from the roof after crawling out of his bedroom window managed to come away unscathed after falling into a passerby's arms.It's a situation that could have ended tragically if not for the quick actions of a good Samaritan.Police report Jill Harper happened to be driving by the 1300 block of Mills Street in Sandusky, Ohio and saw the toddler hanging from the edge of the roof. She ran over to help.According to the police report, the child fell into her arms, and she brought him inside."When I caught him I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, I caught him,'" said Harper."When I started pounding on the house, that's when he fell, and my hand was pounding.  So when he fell, he kind of came back and hit my arm, and then I caught him."Police said they did not notice any obvious bumps and bruises. The Sandusky Fire Department responded to the scene, looked him over and found no injuries.Kelsie Hellman, the boy's mother's cousin, signed a refusal form, not wanting him to be transported to the hospital, according to police.Sandusky police said the boy is currently in the custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman told police she is trying to gain custody of the boy, whom she has looked after since he was 3 months old.How did he get out there? Hellman told police she was using the bathroom when the incident happened. She said the boy must have gone around the baby gate she put at the bottom of her stairs, allowing him to get up to his room where the window was left slightly open. The boy then apparently slid through the window, which opens onto the roof.Meanwhile, Sandusky Police Detective Kevin Youskievicz told Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland, he believes the child could have suffered serious injuries if Harper hadn't acted quickly."I can only describe her as a hero, she's a hero," Youskievicz said."Everyone says we need heroes, she is one,"According to the report, Hellman said her husband was fixing the window so the boy could not crawl out of it again. 2079
