DENVER – Sen. Cory Gardner, the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Wednesday that Roy Moore, the Republican candidate for Alabama’s U.S. Senate seat, should drop out of the special election if the allegations he had a sexual relationship with a teen girl are true. The Washington Post broke the story Wednesday that in 1979, Moore—then a 32-year-old district attorney—had a sexual encounter with a girl who was 14 years old at the time. The Post reported that after meeting the girl one day, Moore picked her up days later, took her to a wooded area, kissed her, removed his clothes, and touched her inappropriately.Three other women told The Post Moore had pursued them while he was in his 30s and they were between 16 and 18 years old, though they said no sexual contact occurred.Moore denied the allegations, calling them “completely false” and a “desperate political attack” by the Democratic Party and Washington Post. His campaign said the report was “the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation.”But Colorado's Gardner, who as chairman of the NRSC is in charge of helping elect and re-elect Republicans to the U.S. Senate, appeared to be taking the report seriously.“The allegations against Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore are deeply troubling,” Gardner said in a prepared statement. “If these allegations are found to be true, Roy Moore must drop out of the Alabama special Senate election.”Gardner, as the NRSC chair, endorsed Moore in late September after he defeated Sen. Luther Strange, whom President Trump had publicly supported, in the special primary.“Roy Moore will be imperative to passing a conservative agenda, and we support him in keeping this seat in Republican hands,” Gardner said in a statement at the time, saying the NRSC’s focus “is always on keeping a strong Republican majority in the Senate.”Moore has been under fire since he was announced as the challenger to Strange. He has in the past called homosexuality “a crime against nature,” has questioned whether President Obama was born in America, and has said that he didn’t think Muslims should serve in Congress.Despite Gardner’s statement Thursday, Alabama’s Secretary of State’s Office said Thursday that his name can’t be removed for the ballot even if he were to drop out of the race.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also, however, said that Moore should “step aside” if the allegations are true.Other top Senate Republicans—John Cornyn of Texas, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania agreed, with Cornyn calling the report “deeply troubling.”Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said Moore should step aside without saying further investigation was necessary."The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying," McCain said in a tweet. "He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of."But Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler came to Moore's defense."Take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus. there's just nothing immoral or illegal here," Zeigler told the Washington Examiner.Moore faces Democrat Doug Jones in the special election on Dec. 12. 3247

DENVER -- An Aurora Theater Shooting survivor, who made the difficult decision to amputate his leg after years of excruciating pain, is now taking his first steps toward recovery.Joshua Nowlan was shot in the arm and the leg in the 2012 movie theater shooting, and recovery has been hell. "Last night, I couldn't sleep whatsoever," Nowlan said, walking into Creative Technology Prosthetic's Denver office. "I was so excited that today finally has come that I can put my prosthetic on for the first time."After doctors amputated his leg in January, he had major complications, including kidney failure, a serious fall and a hematoma that required another emergency surgery."I am still completely 100 percent on the side that I am happy, that I did the amputation surgery," Nowlan said, rubbing the stump that is still swollen and healing. As he took his first steps on his prosthetic, he began to cry."It feels so weird, but it feels so right, too, at the same time," he said.Zach Harvey made the prosthetic and said that eventually, Nowlan will walk without any assistance and with a different prosthetic."Right now, we want something a little softer, but as he starts to tolerate pressure, walk faster, and wants to do more activities, then we'll provide him with something a little springier," Harvey said.Nowlan said it's another piece in the puzzle he is trying to put back together."Even though it happened five years ago, he took something from me that will never be put back together," Nowlan said. "And here I am trying to makeshift those puzzle pieces and put them back in."  1656

DESCANSO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County couple is warning others after getting a flat tire from an unusual source. Pamela Jessup was running errands in her Toyota RAV4 on SR-79 near Old Highway 80 last Thursday when she heard a thump.Jessup says she pulled over and looked at her back tire. After not seeing anything wrong, she went on her way.The thumping, however, only intensified after she drove onto Interstate 8. When she drove home, Jessup says her husband Davis found a temporary lane marker nailed in to the tire. While doing their due diligence, the Descanso residents found dozens of temporary nail markers along the side of the road in the same area where Jessup ran into issues.A local tire shop was able to fix the damage to the tire, but it cost the pair . Other residents in the area took to social media to complain similar events that happened to them.On Facebook, at least three others said they also got flat tires after driving through the area. From Tuesday through Friday, neighbors reported a road construction project that included restriping.A spokesperson for the Caltrans subcontractor Granite Construction issued this statement: 1179

Despite warnings about spreading the coronavirus by spending the holiday with people outside the immediate household, it appears millions of Americans flew to destinations over the Christmas weekend.TSA is reporting the two highest numbers of passengers screened during the pandemic on either side of December 25. More than 1.19 million people flew on December 23 and 1.28 million on Sunday.Sunday, December 27, set a record for the most people screened at TSA checkpoints since mid-March, when concerns about the spread of the coronavirus prompted stay-at-home orders and effectively stopped travel. It was also just the tenth time since March that more than 1 million passengers were screened at the country’s airports; six of the ten days have been in December. Here’s a look at which days since mid-March have had more than 1 million travelers go through TSA checkpoints:October 18: 1,031,505November 20: 1,019,836November 25: 1,070,967November 29: 1,176,091December 18: 1,066,747December 19: 1,073,563December 20: 1,064,619December 23: 1,191,123December 26: 1,128,773December 27: 1,284,599Sunday’s record-high number of travelers is still down roughly 50% from a year ago on the Sunday after Christmas. The increase in travel has health experts worried about another surge in coronavirus cases, similar to the one following Thanksgiving that many states are still struggling with in the form of full hospitals and a lack of ICU beds and medical staff.“We very well might see a post-seasonal — in the sense of Christmas, New Year’s — surge, and as I’ve described it, as a surge upon a surge,” Fauci said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”Dr. Anthony Fauci said he thinks the worst is still yet to come in the coronavirus pandemic.“I share the concern of President-elect Biden that as we get into the next few weeks it might actually get worse,” Fauci said. The U.S. has recorded more than 19 million cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic started, and tragically, more than 333,000 Americans have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. While the number of cases and deaths have slightly declined in the last few days, some experts worry the numbers reflect a lag in reporting data over the holiday and will bounce back up in the next few days. 2262

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — The re-extension of a facial covering directive in Palm Beach County, Florida is being called "medical tyranny" by some opponents who took to the streets Saturday afternoon in Delray Beach to display their frustrations.Chris Nelson, the lead organizer of the "Reopen South Florida" rally, points to statistics that show the county's mortality rate has fallen."What we're seeing right now is a dangerous precedent," Nelson said. "If they can tell me that I cannot buy or sell anything without a mask on, they can tell me that I can't buy or sell without proof of a vaccine, that I took a vaccine, and it could go on and on."During Tuesday's presentation to county commissioners, Dr. Alina Alonso, head of the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County, told commissioners there are encouraging signs when it comes to the county's COVID-19 positivity rate, which has decreased over the past two weeks. Additionally, there have been no coronavirus-related deaths since Oct. 7.However, she cautioned that 50% of new cases in the county are people ages 35 to 64. The new facial covering extension is in effect until Nov. 22."The mortality is going down, but we don't know what the residual impact is going to be on people, whether the damage to their lungs is going to be long-term," Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Robert Weinroth said Tuesday.According to the CDC, studies have shown that the use of masks has been proven to slow and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The agency recommends that anyone over the age of two wear a mask, excluding those with conditions that would make wearing them difficult.Even still, "Reopen South Florida" marched for blocks down Atlantic Avenue to the song "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister in a display of opposition."Probably half of the medical doctors and (doctors of osteopathic medicine) that are against the research, that have no clue why we're in lockdowns, that are against quarantining, and there are about 50% that are for it," Dr. Matt McNabb said. The march ended with a mask-burning ceremony at the Delray Beach Pavilion. But people like Pasquale Catania still worries the mask debate has too much political influence."We need to keep these masks on until a solution, until we have an actual cure, until it's proven," Catania said. "You know, it's too early.""Reopen South Florida" wants Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to take control of the situation and block county commissioners on any more extensions. This story was originally published by Arthur Mondale on WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2579
