A jury of seven men and five women has been selected for Harvey Weinstein's rape trial after an arduous, two-week process in which scores of people were dismissed because they had already made up their minds about the disgraced Hollywood mogul. Opening statements are expected Wednesday in the case against the 67-year-old Weinstein. During jury selection, prosecutors had accused Weinstein's lawyers of systematically trying to keep young women off the panel, though the final makeup of the jury Friday turned out to be more closely balanced. For its part, the defense raised an outcry because one of the jurors is the author of an upcoming novel about young women dealing with predatory older men. 711
A 17-month-old girl who was wounded in the west Texas shooting rampage is expected to make a full recovery. The toddler, identified as Anderson Davis, was one of the 22 people injured in Saturday’s shooting. Davis’ family praised doctors and first responders for saving her life. Texas governor Greg Abbott, citing family members, said the girl would need to have surgery Monday in order to remove shrapnel from her body. The Davis family also said they're looking forward to reuniting Anderson with her twin brother at home soon.Seven people were killed in the shootings. The victims ranged in ages from 15 to 57 years old, according to Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke. A 9-year-old child accused of causing a mobile home fire that killed three children and two adults in central Illinois has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder. The juvenile also was charged with two counts of arson and one count of aggravated arson."You know, would he? I don't know if he understands what he's really done," neighbor Liza Munoz said. "Do you know what I mean? Can you imagine? And a child doing that?" The April 6 fire killed a 1-year-old, two 2-year-olds, a 34-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman at the Timberline Mobile Home Park near the village of Goodfield, about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said the fire was started intentionally. No child as young as this one has been accused in a mass killing since at least 2006, according to a mass murder database that tracks all U.S. homicides since then in which four or more people were killed, not including the offender, over a period of 24 hours, regardless of weapon, location, victim-offender relationship or motive."I think that he should be followed well into his 30s or 40s," Munoz said. "You know, he should be on probation for a long time for this. It shouldn't just be until he's 18." 1230
A Bay View, Wisconsin, resident was surprised last month when he opened his federal stimulus check and found some numbers were missing. Clark Rendall found that his check that he said should have been ,200 was cut for just .60. "I looked at the check and it says it's for and 60 cents and there wasn't any sort of accompanying documentation or explanation in regard to where that number came from," he said. Rendall said he was contacted by the IRS back in March about a missing tax document, which he quickly sent to them.Since then he has not received his federal income tax refund, and that if the document affected anything it would be his refund, and would be for a few hundred dollars, not the ,200 amount of the stimulus check. He's tried to get answers, but has not heard back. "There's a phone number for the IRS but you call it, and it says if there's no one available to talk to you," he said. The IRS has a cutoff for people who make more than ,000 a year, and take off on stimulus checks for every 0 above that threshold. Rendall told us he does not make that much money. An IRS spokesperson said they cannot comment on individual cases. They directed us to their 1206
A 16-year-old Guatemalan boy died in government custody Monday morning, Customs and Border Protection said. The boy was apprehended and processed near Hidalgo, Texas, on May 13 before being transferred to the Weslaco Border Patrol Station Sunday, the agency said in a statement. He was found unresponsive Monday morning. The cause of death is unknown, the agency said."The men and women of US Customs and Border Protection are saddened by the tragic loss of this young man and our condolences are with his family," said Acting Commissioner John Sanders in a statement. The boy, who was not identified and was not in US custody at the time of his death, had suffered from complications of pneumonia, Tekandi Paniagua, the Guatemalan consul general in Del Rio, Texas, told CNN.The deaths of two young Guatemalans in December spurred congressional hearings and new procedures from DHS and CBP. 1211
