(AP) — The potential magnitude of the wildfire disaster in Northern California escalated as officials raised the death toll to 71 and released a missing-persons list with 1,011 names on it more than a week after the flames swept through.The fast-growing roster of people unaccounted for probably includes some who fled the blaze and do not realize they have been reported missing, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said late Thursday.He said he made the list public in the hope that people will see they are on it and let authorities know they are OK."The chaos that we were dealing with was extraordinary," Honea said of the crisis last week, when the flames razed the town of Paradise and outlying areas in what has proved to be the nation's deadliest wildfire in a century. "I feel like people are going to come into our tent."At the other end of the state, more residents were being allowed back in their homes near Los Angeles after a wildfire torched an area the size of Denver. The 153-square-mile blaze was 69 percent contained after destroying more than 600 homes and other structures, authorities said. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District who siphoned more than ,000 from the district was sentenced Wednesday to a year of house arrest, three years of probation, and was ordered to repay the school district.Danya Margarita Williams of Chula Vista, 42, pleaded guilty in May to an embezzlement charge for taking money paid by prospective employees through job application fees.In addition to house arrest and probation, Williams was ordered to pay back ,988 to the school district. Another embezzlement count and a grand theft count were dismissed as part of the plea deal.As part of her job, Williams was responsible for processing money orders received for fingerprint background investigations at the district, which are required during employment screenings, according to Chula Vista Police Capt. Phil Collum.Each background investigation costs between to per applicant, and the applicants pay the fee using money orders, he said.``Instead of processing the money in accordance with district requirements, Williams deposited the money into her personal bank account,'' Collum said.District officials discovered the embezzlement -- which occurred between June 2016 and December 2017 -- and reported it to police, he said. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Detectives worked Friday to determine who fatally shot a man in a South Bay parking lot, apparently during a quarrel over a dog.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Interstate 5 and state Route 54 shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday found Corey McCastle, 41, on the ground in the 700 block of E Street in Chula Vista, suffering from bullet wounds, according to police.Paramedics took McCastle to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead."The motive for the shooting remains unknown," Lt. Dan Peak said. "However, it is believed McCastle had gone to the location to speak with an unknown individual regarding a dispute over a dog."The shooter was described only as a man dressed in dark-colored clothes and armed with a handgun.Further details on the disagreement that apparently led to the slaying was not immediately available. 888

(KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said.
