SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Coroner's officials today said that a worker who fell 60 feet to his death while setting up a stage for the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio was a 49-year-old San Diego man.The worker was identified as Christopher Griffin, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office. The Riverside County Fire Department reported receiving a call of someone falling from a roof at 9:26 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Monroe Street and Avenue 50.The venue for the festival, the Empire Polo Club, is located on the southwest corner of that intersection. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.In a written statement Saturday, the festival's production company, Goldenvoice, confirmed the death."Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard- working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. We will miss him dearly,'' the company said.The Indio Police Department was investigating the death. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798

Gavin Newsom will concluded his "California for All'' Health Care Tour in San Diego Saturday by holding a rally to reaffirm his position on women's reproductive health services.Newsom had been on on the promotional tour since Tuesday, stopping in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento to discuss the health care initiatives in his proposed budget for the 2020 fiscal year.According to Newsom, his proposed initiatives would lower health care costs, expand on former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act and make progress toward a single-payer health care system.The program would also bring back the Obamacare-era healthcare mandate that penalizes anyone who doesn't have healthcare coverage. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station pleaded guilty Wednesday to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, faces a year in local prison when he is sentenced Nov. 1.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public today for information about an Egyptian man who was found dead under potentially suspicious circumstances off the coast of Mission Beach.The body of 37-year-old Haitham "Max" Elshayeb was floating about two and a half miles from shore when a fisherman on a boat spotted it shortly before 10:30 a.m. Oct. 10, San Diego police said.The body, dressed only in surfer-style shorts, didn't show any obvious signs of traumatic injuries, Lt. Anthony Dupree said. A possibly suspicious circumstance, however, was a chain wrapped around the dead man's waist, though it might have been used simply as a belt or style accessory, the lieutenant said.Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the fatality "out of an abundance of caution," and the death has been classified as suspicious, Dupree said. A ruling on the cause of Elshayeb's death remained on hold this week pending completion of postmortem exams.Police hope to contact people who had contact with Elshayeb in the days and weeks leading to his death, Dupree said.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
