SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Starbucks that played a key role in redeveloping North Park will soon serve its last drink.Carly Clegg is a regular at the Starbucks next to The Observatory North Park."It's a bummer," said Clegg. The collection of notes posted inside the Starbucks tell the story: Customers bidding farewell to their Starbucks. It will close up for good Saturday. The apparent reason for the closing is one regular Robert Green knows well. Several customers who have asked employees why it's closing have been told an increase in homeless individuals are turning off customers, leading to a decline in sales."There are people camped out there all day. I noticed an uptick starting about five years ago," said Green."When I have family and friends that come in, they walk by and say, 'Let's go to another one,'" Clegg added. The closing comes some seven months after Starbucks announced customers would no longer be required to buy something to use the restroom or hang out. Critics said the policy could attract more homeless. Closures like this one are likely to add fuel to the debate."You hate for this business to go out with a whimper," said Green. The Starbucks opened up 13 years ago during the renovation of the North Park Theatre. Green was on the planning committee that approved the redevelopment project."They stuck out their necks. They were one of the first businesses in. They were a catalyst," said Green. Green says the long morning lines he saw at the Starbucks five years ago have disappeared. He hopes the closure won't be sign of things to come."A lot of people have put a lot of work and money into this neighborhood ... It makes you wonder who could be affected next," said Green. In a statement, Starbucks says, "... as part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we’ve determined it is best to close the store at 2899 University Avenue in San Diego, CA." 1997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego public figure is speaking out after being hit three times by distracted drivers over 8 years.Monica Zech is the Public Information Officer for the City of El Cajon. Her passion is public safety, specifically behind the wheel. She started as a Traffic Reporter in 1984 and had a 30-year career in broadcasting. She immediately found out, through reporting on first responders, how many crashes were preventable. "When my father was hit about eight years after that, when I started lecturing, then the DUI issue became prevalent," Zech said her father was walking across the street in a marked cross-walk when a drunk driver hit him in 1992.August 29th, 2011 a distracted driver ran a red light slamming into her. The crash was so violent surgeons told her she should've been paralyzed, "it was shocking to hear that. They said is this your MRI? Are you sure? I said I'm sure that's my MRI. They said well we're surprised you're sitting here, you should be paralyzed. We have patients with the same MRI and they're in a wheelchair."She now has a titanium plate that straightens her spine and protects her in case she is in a future crash. The next crash was in traffic on I-5, February of 2017. "I kept noticed his head bobbing down, looking down, I realized he was on his cell phone and wham! He hits me from behind," she said.Tuesday she was hit from behind again. This time she says she stopped at a red light about to turn onto I-8 Eastbound from La Mesa Boulevard. She said the other driver's airbags deployed, she pulled over and was extremely apologetic, saying "I was looking at my cellphone, I do Door Dash, and I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." 10News has reached out to DoorDash for a comment and have not heard back.An excuse more common with a startling statistic from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 1860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman who was shot at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas is making great strides in her recovery.Tina Frost and her boyfriend were with eight friends when Stephen Paddock opened fire. Frost was the only one of her group who was shot. The bullet went into her eye.Her family says the recovery has been difficult but that she continues to power forward with her therapies.Frost’s mother posted an update on the GoFundMe page indicating Frost has walked without assistance, thrown a ball, baked cookies, and painted an eye patch for herself.Amy Klinger, a close family friend, says Frost's strength and resilience is no surprise."She is not going to let anything get in her way of getting back to her normal, happy, and healthy life," said Klinger.  "It was so amazing, I walked into the room and she was talking with her physical therapist and because her sentences were so clear, I did forget for a minute she had not been speaking."A lifelong soccer player, Frost has even been able to kick a soccer ball to her dad in the hallway."The fact that they did say at the very beginning, let's see what happens in a year, and it's only less than five weeks out and she's walking and she's talking, she's just, the progress has been amazing and is a testament to who she is," said Klinger.Klinger believes the worldwide support and power of positivity has been a factor in the healing, for both Frost and her family."Just knowing there's this enormous community, Team Tina, that's out there behind the family, it keeps their spirits up and keeps them positive because this is a lot to do deal with," said Klinger.Frost has a big surgery in the upcoming weeks where doctors will begin facial reconstruction. 1749

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego police officer shot a man during a response to an emergency call in a Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood Wednesday night, police officials said.SDPD officials said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of Celtic Court, near Donaker Street. Officials confirmed officers were called to the area after a 911 call was made regarding a domestic violence incident. An SDPD official at the scene said, "The dispatcher could overhear the reporting party and the male on the radio call. She could hear the male talking about wanting to be shot by police officers and there was indication there was firearms inside of the house.”Police said when officers arrived, they found a 61-year-old man and his wife in front their home. When officers approached, the man “produced a revolver from his waistband” and started to draw the weapon towards officers. Officials said one officer fired a single round from his service weapon, striking the man in the torso. The injured man, identified on Friday as Richard Young, was breathing and talking while being taken to a local hospital, police said. Young underwent emergency surgery early Thursday morning, and police said Friday that Young "remains in a local hospital under guard."According to the department, officers recovered the man’s gun at the scene. The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave in light of the investigation, which is being conducted by SDPD’s Homicide Unit.Officials identified the officer involved as Timothy Breck, a five-year veteran of the Department assigned to Northeastern Division.SDPD officials said: “When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations. The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.” 2282
