LAKE MURRAY (CNS) - A 48-year-old man was taken to a hospital with multiple major fractures after hitting a Subaru WXR on the 5000 block of Campanile Drive, authorities said today.A 20-year-old behind the wheel of the car pulled out of an alley in front of the 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle, at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, while trying to drive north, according to Officer Robert Heims, with the San Diego Police Department.The motorcyclist was westbound on Montezuma Road and made a left turn southbound onto Campanile Drive, where the biker hit the car, Heims said.The driver of the Subaru had no injuries. LAKE HUGHES (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area was 12% contained but experienced a "flare up" due to extreme heat Friday afternoon after already scorching 11,637 acres, destroying five structures and threatening more over the last three days."There is a bit of a flare up this afternoon, but we don't really have a ton of information of where that is yet because it's going on right now," a U.S. Forest Service official told City News Service late Friday afternoon.Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Friday, additional evacuations were ordered for the Fairmont area east of Lancaster, where residents were told to evacuate from north of Avenue D/Highway 138, south of Avenue A, west of 150th Street West and east of 200th Street West, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Palmdale Station."Fire will continue to grow and threaten the surrounding communities of Lake Hughes, Leona Valley, Lake Elizabeth, Pine Canyon, Quail Lake, Three Points, Historic Ridge Route and Inventoried Roadless Areas, fire officials said during a late-morning update Friday. "Spotting and aggressive fire behavior will continue."Fanning the flames is this weekend's heat wave, with firefighters braced for dangerously hot weather that will make battling the fire more difficult.The focus for crews on Friday was "fire suppression, air operations, evacuations as needed and structure defense operations ... line construction where possible," officials said.No injuries have been reported, but at least five structures have been destroyed and further damage assessments were being conducted.The fire was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest, according to the U. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.Mandatory evacuations have been in effect for the area east of Ridge Route Road, west of Lake Hughes Road, north of Pine Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road, and south of state Route 138, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. LA SALLE, Colo. -- Under normal circumstances, most of us wouldn’t choose to get lost, but the growing number of corn mazes across America suggests that may not always be the case.Although corn mazes are a quintessential fall activity, the concept of a corn maze has only been around for several decades.Glen Fritzler is the owner of Fritzler Farm Park. He says he heard about the idea from his cousin in the late 90s. At the time, his crops were really struggling because of hail damage, so he decided it was time to go a different direction with his farm.“I was actually pretty desperate and so I called him up and said ‘hey what was that idea you had’ and he said ‘corn maze, man, you gotta do it,'” Fritzler said.So, he signed the contract and started designing mazes with The Maize company in the year 2000. The Maize was founded by Brett Herbst in 1996. The process is more complicated than people realize.“We have to have the corn maze design figured out by the first of June,” Fritzler said.Fritzler sends his ideas to Herbst who finalizes the concept to something that can work in a corn field.“You can only have so much detail in a certain design and a certain field size without compromising spacing between pathways,” Herbst said.The design is placed over a grid system that is translated onto a cornfield using flags and spray paint.“It takes 24 pages of regular grid paper to map out our corn mazes,” Fritzler said.In the span of one afternoon in early June, people who work for The Maize come out to mark the maze step by step with spray paint. Herbst compares it to connecting the dots on a cereal box.“They visualize us out there when the corn is 8-feet tall and we’re cutting it out with machetes or something. And that’s not how it’s done. We do it when it’s very early,” Fritzler said.Fritzler says each line on the paper represents a row of corn, and wherever there’s a trail, they have to remove the corn. Then they maintain and groom it for months, and make the path flat like a sidewalk.For the past two decades, the Fritzler Farm corn maze has seen many different patterns. Frtizler says they try to pick something fitting for that year in history. In 2020, it’s quite obvious what the design was inspired by.“So, we did a corn maze thanking not just the doctors and nurses, but everybody that sacrificed. The grocery store people, the people at the gas stations… everyone that had to go to work and interact with the public made sacrifices. And then the people that were laid off, they made sacrifices also.”Whether in a corn maze, or in real life, we can get through the twists and turns that come our way together.“I’m just so thankful for the corn maze and the opportunity to get to entertain people like we do,” Fritzler said. 2764

LeBron James already runs the NBA from a player's perspective, but now people want him to run the country's education system as well. An online petition is asking for signatures to get James considered to take over the Secretary of Education position from Betsy DeVos.The petition says they want James to step in as he has shown his desire to help at-risk children after opening his "I Promise" school in Akron, Ohio late last month which will give education to those children who would not otherwise be able to receive it. It also gives all those who graduate from the school free tuition to Akron University. James recently spoke to CNN's Don Lemon to discuss the new school as well as President Trump to elected DeVos to her position. Trump then went on to tweet about the interview, calling into question James' intelligence. The tweet led to a firestorm of responses calling into question Trump's intelligence as well as the Secretary of Education's. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers responded to the president's tweet by saying he, and many other athletes across different sports, support James and what he has done in the community, not just the NBA. The petition is looking for 12,000 signatures and currently has over 11,750.  1289

The need is greater than ever and organizations have had to get creative.Even the Salvation Army bell will be different this year.“There are fewer retail locations, people aren’t carrying as much cash as they have in the past, many are now unemployed,” says commissioner Kenneth Hodder, the national commander of the Salvation Army.The organization has been serving those in need since 1865. Now grown to 131 countries and 7,600 centers, almost every ZIP code has a branch. The need this year, the commissioner says, is like a tsunami.“In a typical year, the Salvation Army will serve about 52 million meals, for example. So far this year, we’re well over 110 million meals. The numbers have shot up astronomically,” Hodder said.The organization has provided 1.5 million more nights of shelter in addition to 900,000 instances of emotional and spiritual support.“As eviction moratoriums start to expire, as corporate capabilities to support people with furloughs or reduced hours decline, we’re anticipating a 155 % increase in the number of people coming to the Salvation Army for Christmas assistance,” Hodder said.And, with the coronavirus pandemic, the Salvation Army decided to get creative. Launching "Kettle Pay,” which is what you'd think, you can pay at the kettle without touching anything.“They’ll be able to bump their phone on the sign and electronically, the opportunity to give will come up on their phone,” Hodder said.This year, the commissioner says, they've further refined the technology so that your digital gift at a particular location will benefit people in that same area.Make-A-Wish America has also launched a digital campaign for the holidays.“We’re really excited to introduce our new holiday fundraising campaign called ‘Families for Wishes,’” says Christie Madsen, senior manager of national fundraising campaigns for Make-A-Wish America.
