They've even taken up archery.“We’ve hiked in the Tetons, we’ve horseback with a number of outfitters, we’ve taken day trips to other cities like Ashton in St. Anthony. We saw the dunes in St. Anthony,” Wells said.All while keeping their day jobs.“They understand as long as you’re present and you have internet access that you’re able to do whatever it is you need to do, whether you’re in an office or remote,” Wells said.Property managers say it's a trend they're seeing a lot of.“The 30-day rental used to be more of a unicorn than it is now,” Danessa Itaya, president of Property Management Inc., said.PMI has 260 franchises across the United States.“We hear from our franchisees that they’re getting these 2-3 month rentals, but they’re asking for upgrading internet so I can work remotely (and) how easy can I access the grocery store and the beach,” Itaya said.San Antonio, Texas, Austin, Texas, Naples, Florida, and Idaho are destination hot spots.“Driggs, Idaho, is a feeder into Yellowstone, into Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and they’re regularly looking at 1-3 month rentals. You don’t usually get that, especially in Driggs, Idaho,” Itaya said.Now, as fall approaches, the other inquiry is about school, and internet bandwidth to support both distance learning and remote employees.“They need high-speed internet which is not common,” Itaya said. “You don’t normally get that request from a vacation rental. Stanford University's Dr. Bali Pulendran hopes that we can achieve herd immunity, even though there are a certain number of people who are still hesitant to take the vaccine."I think we should remember that a vaccine that is 95% effective is only effective if the majority of people in a population take it. If only half the population or only 60% of the population take it, then we are unlikely to have achieved the level of herd immunity that you need for curbing the disease," says Dr. Pulendran.And if the new COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses, how crucial will it be to make sure people receive that second round of immunization?Asked whether follow up will be a concern, Dr. Ray says, "I think it is a possible concern. We’re going to do a lot of learning. So, one of the things we’ve learned is that some vaccines we thought you needed multiple doses, one dose works pretty well."Doctors say research will be ongoing on the vaccine and the virus itself to ensure people will be protected as much as possible, because so many are hopeful for an end to COVID-19. 2268

That’s just the hippos, which are part of a new exhibit the zoo opened during the shutdown.“Opening a brand new exhibit is normally hard enough,” said Bob Chastain, the President and CEO of the zoo.With large groups and traditional presentations considered unsafe, the zoo pivoted. “Now, what we do instead is we’re grabbing random people and taking them back behind the scenes, letting them help us with the everyday things we’re doing,” Chastain said.Letting kids help feed the hippos and other animals, up close and personal.“We are trying to adjust and we would like to share our hippos,” Wallace said. “But because we don’t want crowds, we do it in small bursts.”Back in spring, zoos and aquariums were told to close.“All of them have had a period of two to four months of closure. Some are still closed,” said Dan Ashe, President and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. AZA is a nonprofit that represents over 240 of these businesses.“When they’re closed they’re not really closed, because they have to continue caring for the animals,” Ashe said. That’s what makes zoos and aquariums unique.“The essential ingredient in success is a guest,” he said. Even with no guests, the work doesn’t stop, which has put some in financial distress. “We have had some that have been on the verge of closure.”Ashe said about 20% of its members are in a weak financial position, so zoos got creative to keep guests interested. “The San Antonio Zoo started with the idea of a drive-thru zoo,” Ashe said.At Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, they made use of social media. “Our social media team, like many around the country, really ramped up,” Chastain said.Now as they begin to reopen their gates, they face a whole new set of challenges. “Almost every zoo in the country had to revamp and figure out how to do timed tickets, because it was one of the major requirements,” Chastain said.Timed ticketing, one way traffic, cashless exchange -- these were all concepts zoos and aquariums had to adapt to.“All over the zoo there are marks that help people stay away from each other,” Chastain said.Even with sold out tickets, the crowds are nothing like they used to be. And many fundraising events had to be canceled or postponed with new capacity limits.“Our guess is for the next 12 months, we won’t have those large crowds,” he said.But families continue to come to see the giraffes, look at the penguins, or feed Zambezi and Kasai, the hippos.“It’s been a challenge, but a lot of fun,” Wallace said. 3105
