CARDIFF (KGTV) -- With just a little bit of planning, Sharon Belknap begins a free-hand sand mandala that will offer its message, briefly, to all who pass by on the bridge at Cardiff State Beach where the San Elijo lagoon meets the ocean.Watching her work is like watching a dance.The graphic designer and illustrator draws shapes using a small, inexpensive rake. She brings extras because often passersby find inspiration and ask to join her, a collaboration she welcomes.The connections she has made through her sand art, she says have added meaning to her creations.People also send her their photos of her artwork, asking to use them in their holiday cards.Each mandala has an inscription, such as: "You Are Loved," or "Only Love."One that resonated particularly was "Grateful for ____.""People were shouting their words from the bridge," says Belknap.Sometimes friends join her.Heather Nelson is a regular, and a longtime friend. The day we shot the story, Kari Prevost was joining for her first collaboration with Sharon."The sounds of the ocean, the beauty of the water," she says, "it's restorative. It rekindles a playfulness that's innate."Expressed on a canvas that will be washed away by the waves; the impermanence, Belknap says, is freeing and healing.Her son Chris Thompson, a 28 year-old Valley Center firefighter, died in an early morning crash on his motorcycle this 4th of July."I like to say he ascended," she says. The next morning, inexplicably, Sharon says she woke up feeling joy. She came to her spot in Cardiff before sunrise."The words just poured into me: 'Only Love.'The first person who walked over the bridge and saw her mandala tribute, took a picture of her, standing in the shadow of the bridge illuminated in the early sunlight.Belknap says Chris is in every drawing. She adds eyes, which are Chris's, to each one. "Being out here, creating these, I often ask Christopher, 'What do you see honey?' And he says, 'Mom, I see you.'"When this design is done, Sharon and her friends share a covid-conscious "butt hug," as she calls it, then take a moment to lift their hands to share it with Christopher, before sending its message out to all who are fortunate enough to see it before it's erased by the waves."You Are Loved," it says. 2274

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — What looks like an asteroid may just be an old rocket from a failed moon-landing mission more than 50 years ago. The newly spotted object is expected to get nabbed by Earth's gravity and become a mini moon next month. NASA's leading asteroid expert thinks it is the upper rocket stage from a 1966 mission. Observations as the object draws closer should help nail its identity. He speculates the object is the Centaur stage from NASA's Surveyor 2 mission, dating back to 1966. CARSLBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- If there's anyone in Carlsbad that knows food, it Cheri Poulos. Poulos is the founder of Carlsbad Food Tours, a tour that gives locals and tourists a taste of the city. Poulos has a blog where she writes about the best places to eat in the city. The food lover offers two different types of tours, one called the Taste of Carlsbad and one called the Indulgence Food tour. Private tours are also available. 10News went along with Poulos for one of the food tours. The first stop was at Gregorio's Italian Kitchen, known for giving back to the community. At one point, the restaurant donated all of their proceeds to the Boys and Girls Club. From Gregorio's the tour continued to Caldo Pomodoro, home to what some call the best garlic bread in the county. Portraits of Caldo Pomodoro's owners hang over the entrance of the restaurant. The restaurant's founders are a borther and sister duo, Fran and Gina. Fran was a Hollywood hairdresser and pictures of his clients adorn the walls of the restaurant. Fran has since passed away, his sister Gina now runs the restuarant. The tour also includes some stops at several sweet spots, including a gourmet donut shop called, The Goods. The Goods is the sister restaurant of Cafe Topes, a staple in town known for their cinnamon rolls. Both locations are run by the Barille family. The tour then continues to Gelato Love, a family-run gelato shop. The shop is owned by Paola Richard and her cousin, Christina. Gelato Love is the only shop in the entire country that doesn't use any added sugar, only sugar from the fruit itself. The tour also stops at other local favorites like Vigilucci's Gourmet Market, Witch Creek Winery and Humble Olive Oils. The tour operates daily, seven days a week. Hundreds of people waited in line Thursday evening for the Black Friday event at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets. Despite unfavorable conditions, many decided to shop because they did not want to break tradition. "We started doing it when I was in high school, and now I'm 26, so we've just gone every year with our mom," one woman told 10News. 10News crews got special access inside the new Adidas store during the sales event. Carlsbad Premium Outlet General Manager, Terri Mannes, said the retailer just finished their remodel, doubling in size just in time for the holiday shopping season.
