SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman driving on a suspended license who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in state prison. Mayra Alejandra Gonzalez, 30, -- on probation for a prior DUI -- had a .29% blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9- month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old daughter broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones and underwent five surgeries to treat his injuries. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Morse High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.HHSA is working with the San Diego Unified School District to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing. The dates of exposure are from Feb. 28 to March 13 of this year.Morse High School, in the Skyline area of San Diego, is currently participating in social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 and onsite TB screening will not be available.According to the HHSA, students who were identified as being potentially exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider should contact the county's TB Control Program at 619-692-8621 to arrange to arrange an appointment for a free test.School teachers and staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District.The disease is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed to TB do not become infected."Testing is recommended for all those exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection usually has no symptoms," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a person is infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."Symptoms of infectious TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People infected with the disease, or who are immunocompromised, may not show symptoms. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials in San Diego County reported 269 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, bringing the total to 54,583 since mid-February, and two new deaths, bringing the overall fatality total to 870.The two deaths were men reported to have died earlier this month. They ranged in age from late 60s to early 70s, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Of the 10,819 new tests reported, 2% returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 2.7%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 11,127.Two new community outbreaks were confirmed, one in a health-care setting and the other in a restaurant. In the past seven days -- Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 -- 26 community outbreaks were confirmed.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Of all cases, 3,850 -- or 7.1% -- have required hospitalization. And 889 -- or 1.6% -- of all cases and 23.1% of hospitalized cases had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Meanwhile, all students at San Diego State University remained under a stay-at-home advisory announced Thursday.
