(KGTV) -- The Sheriff's Department is investigating a possible shooting in Lemon Grove. The department confirms a person fired a gun near Albertsons on Broadway Avenue at around 11 p.m. Friday night. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — La Mesa Police Department released body camera footage on Wednesday showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.About 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. LMPD Chief Walt Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated. (See the video above and below.)Raw footage of bodycam footage would be released for four officers involved in the arrest of Amaurie Johnson on May 27, according to La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis.Last week, video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson and an officer escalate at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench during the video. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer.Vasquez added that the officer involved in the video has been an officer for about three years. He added that while Johnson was initially stopped for smoking in a trolley area, he wasn't charged with that when he was arrested.Johnson also denied in a separate press conference after city officials spoke that he was smoking. (Press conference below.)“For that situation to escalate the way it did, and for the cop, you know, to stand firm in his beliefs that I should be detained or taken in with no prior evidence or reasoning, I think that should be seen by the people,” Johnson told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin.He said he was waiting for his friend at the trolley stop, near a building where that friend lives. He added that the officer started questioning him and that he gave the officer the information that he wanted.Johnson adds that he didn't resist or assault anyone."I feel as though people that look like me, um, feel the same way I do and we're tired of it. We're tired of having to deal with stuff like that,” Johnson said.The video prompted the city to begin a special investigation into the incident and LMPD to place the officer involved on administrative leave pending the investigation. 2072

(KGTV) — An East County contractor made a huge investment in the lives and well-being of a pair of employees and their special needs son by gifting them a custom van.The gift for 14-year-old Hayden Welsh, who has spina bifida, and his family was presented by A.M. Ortega Construction in Lakeside. The van is retro-fitted with adaptive equipment, a power ramp, and a low floor for the family, designed to help the family and Hayden get around easier as he grows up."Yeah it makes a world of difference between lifting him, putting him in a chair worrying about him trying to transfer, this thing he's ready to roll in and go," Hayden's mom, Ashley, said. "It was 100% shocking. It's going to make our lives so much easier. I've been looking at vans but financially I can't make that jump."Company owner Maurice Ortega said the gift couldn't go to a more deserving kid."Hayden's had so many surgeries, and he comes flying through the door a few days after surgery, and he pops in my office and he goes, 'what up Mo?,'" said Ortega. "He wants to know what your life's all about. (KGTV) — The mother of a 13-year-old boy killed crossing San Miguel Avenue in Lemon Grove may sue the city for not making the street safer.Tanya Harris, whose son Trevon died in May, filed a claim against the city of Lemon Grove for allegedly ignoring continuing issues on the two-lane road. On May 3, Trevon was crossing the street after visiting a friend's house when he was hit by a car and killed. Tanya and Trevon's brother, Ty, who is only nine, arrived to see him lifeless on the asphalt."When I came up on the road, I immediately saw the body on the road," Tanya said. "When I pulled over, I ran out because I knew it was my child's body that was on the ground."Tanya says Trevon had an infectious smile and had dreams of playing professional basketball. Tanya and Ty are now in grief counseling, which Tanya said is helping.Meanwhile, San Miguel Avenue remains a two-lane road, and the area Trevon was hit doesn't have any speed bumps or stop signs. That's the basis for the claim, which accuses the city of ignoring the risks for years. "It has gravel all over it, and divots and pots, which causes drivers to skid and slide" said Rhonda Holmes, an attorney representing Tanya Harris. "More importantly, people are known to speed down that road."Lemon Grove City Manager Lydia Romero said the city can't comment on pending litigation. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said its traffic investigator found no fault on the part of the driver, and that Trevon darted out into traffic. Tanya wants the city of Lemon Grove to install speed bumps or stop signs by next month, when San Miguel Elementary School starts. The school, which Ty attends, is just steps from where Trevon was hit and killed. 1741
