BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's week-long National Day holiday took in 280 million yuan (42 million U.S. dollars) in film box office receipts, up 12 percent over last year, said sources in the cinema industry.Half of all ticket sales were for "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame," a film that debuted on Sept. 29, starring renowned Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and actress Carina Lau, along with mainland actress Li Bingbing.Director John Woo's new film, "Reign of Assassins," had sales of 30 million yuan during the golden week, which critics say was "ordinary" in box office performance but a "good film." Woo is known internationally for his 2000 film "Mission: Impossible II."The Leonardo DiCaprio film "Inception" continues its climb and took in 50 million between Oct. 1 and 7, making it the fourth foreign film ever to take in more than 400 million yuan in the Chinese mainland's box office. The other three were "Avatar," "2012" and "Transformers."Liu Hui, deputy general manager of Beijing-based UME Huaxing Cinema, is very pleased that "theatres are always packed with audiences during the golden week."
BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fanapi is likely to land on the east coast of Taiwan on Sunday, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) in Beijing Friday. The center of the year' s 11th typhoon was about 700 km southeast from Hualien, in Taiwan, said a statement from the center. It was moving northwest towards Hualien and increasing in strength, the statement noted. The administration has issued a warning regarding huge waves which might strike off the Hualien coast, it said.On Sunday, the southern East China Sea might also produce waves of 4 to 6 meters high and waves in the Taiwan Strait might rise to 3 to 4 meters.Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces along the mainland's southeast coast would also be affected by the typhoon, the statement said. The statement warned all fishing boats in the region to take necessary precautions. The fishing season began in the East China Sea in mid-September and a large number of vessels are in the area.Additionally, Typhoon Fanapi could continue moving west after landing on Taiwan and strike Fujian and Guangdong, the statement said. Also on Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs launched an early-warning for disaster relief responses aimed at the typhoon's possible damages to the southeastern coastal areas. The ministry and the National Committee for Disaster Reduction instructed local governments to carefully keep track of the typhoon's movement and the changes in weather, and strengthen prevention measures for geological disasters and flooding in urban areas.Local governments were also urged to evacuate residents in high-risk areas while providing for their basic living necessities.
TIANJIN, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China could meet the full-year inflation target of 3 percent if macro-control policies were effective, a senior economic planner said Tuesday at the World Economic Forum's annual Summer Davos meeting."China has paid high attention to managing inflation expectations by stepping up macro-controls this year," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission."If managed well, the full-year target of consumer price index of around 3 percent is still attainable," he said. The CPI climbed to a 22-month-high of 3.5 percent in August because of rises in food and fuel prices and a low comparison base.Food prices are likely to remain within reasonable range after macro-control and there is still room for industrial products to fall due to heated competition, Zhang said. The chance is also small for import prices of commodities to experience a dramatic rise again in the rest of the year after earlier retreating, he said.
BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang has urged the country' s anti-graft officials to make more efforts to solve prominent corruption-related problems by taking into account the views of the public. He, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made his remarks at an anti-corruption work conference Saturday. He called for more effective anti-corruption efforts to win the trust of the public while promoting social harmony. He also stressed better enforcement of laws and Party discipline, along with relentless punishment of any violation.According to a statement released after the conference, the country's public spending on government officials' overseas visits, transportation and official receptions this year was reduced by 5.75 billion yuan (858 million U.S. dollars) from last year in a campaign to cut extravagant public spending.Anti-corruption departments have also launched a nationwide examination into the problem of "little coffers", which are private accounts for extracting public funds. More than 24,900 cases of "little coffers" involving public money totaling over 12.24 billion yuan had been found, and a total of 1,035 officials connected to these funds have been punished, according to the statement. Also on Saturday, a statement issued by the anti-corruption department of the Supreme People's Procuratorate said procuratorates around the country had, from 2009 to August 2010, dealt with 1,715 embezzlement and bribery cases and 263 cases of duty dereliction in the use of state-owned land resources.A total of 186 officials above county level were involved in the cases, the statement said.
