SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Arizona man who carried out a series of knifepoint rapes in the city of San Diego 24 years ago, as well as two rapes in Riverside County in 2002 and 2004, was sentenced Thursday to 50 years to life in prison.Christopher Vanbuskirk, 47, of Goodyear, pleaded guilty last year to six rape counts for attacking the women on four occasions between August and November of 1995 in San Diego, as well as two women in the Coachella Valley area of Riverside County in March 2002 and November 2004.Prosecutors said the four San Diego cases occurred twice in the Tierrasanta neighborhood, once in Pacific Beach and once near San Diego Mesa College. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was sentenced Friday to more than 11 years in federal custody for distributing child pornography.Prosecutors say Christopher Duane Wade, 41, admitted last year to sending child porn to others and engaging in a sexually explicit conversation with an undercover agent posing as a teenage girl.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Wade started talking with an undercover Homeland Security Investigations agent in April 2019, thinking she was a 13-year-old girl. They arranged to meet following "more than a week of sexually explicit chats," at which point Wade was arrested.Agents seized his cell phone, which contained pornography depicting "the abuse of very young children," as well as discussions with other people in which he encouraged them "to sexually abuse minors to whom they had access, and to document such abuse for purposes of distributing it to others."Following his 135-month federal prison term, Wade will be on supervised release for 10 years, during which he will be prohibited from having contact with minors, among other conditions, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office."One of our most important roles as prosecutors is to protect our nation's vulnerable children," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Thursday for help in identifying a motorist involved in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian last week in a Chollas Creek-area neighborhood.The 48-year-old victim was standing next to a parked vehicle along the west curb line of the 5300 block of Chollas Parkway shortly before 1 a.m. Friday when a dark-colored car traveling to the south at high speed on the wrong side of the street hit him, according to San Diego police.Following the fatal impact, the motorist stopped momentarily, then drove off, Officer Robert Heims said.The victim, whose name has been withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Surveillance cameras captured images of the vehicle -- a four-door sedan, possibly a Lexus or Toyota with a lowered suspension. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Construction crews will close the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp at Balboa Avenue Friday for a full weekend of work to make improvements to the off-ramp and its intersection with Balboa Avenue, according to the San Diego Association of Governments.The closure will take place from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, during which time construction crews will widen the off-ramp from one lane to two and add a traffic signal at the affected intersection. The signal will go into permanent operation on Monday when the ramp re-opens to vehicle traffic. The improvements will make it easier for motorists to access the future Balboa Avenue trolley station once it opens.The closure will necessitate lane reductions on Balboa and Garnet avenues between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue, according to SANDAG. Only one lane in each direction will be open to vehicle traffic throughout the weekend, although the schedule is subject to change.The weekend work is part of the .17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line Extension, which includes a planned 11-mile extension of trolley service by MTS from Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to University City. The extension will add trolley stops in Mission Bay Park, UC San Diego and Westfield UTC. SANDAG is receiving .04 billion in funding from the Federal Transit Administration to complete the project.The extension and related projects are intended to reduce traffic congestion as the county's population increases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A U.S. Army veteran pleaded not guilty in San Diego Wednesday to a pair of assault with a deadly weapon charges for allegedly stabbing an active-duty serviceman who, along with a friend, pointed out that the veteran's Private First Class badge was upside down on his uniform.Marc Dominguez, 42, who served in the Army in 2003 and 2004 as a Private First Class E-3, was ordered held on ,000 bail.Deputy District Attorney Kelly Rand told Judge Maureen Hallahan that Dominguez stabbed the active-duty serviceman and lunged at the victim's friend with a knife about 11:30 p.m. last Thursday at a Gaslamp Quarter bar after they questioned whether the defendant was in the military because a patch on his uniform was not attached correctly.The active-duty serviceman was stabbed in the head and bicep and sliced his fingers while trying to get the knife away from Dominguez, the prosecutor said. The other man wasn't hurt.Based on the prosecutor's statements in court, the judge found that Dominguez was a danger to the community and raised his bail from ,000 to ,000 and ordered him to stay away from the victims.A readiness conference was set for Nov. 28 and a preliminary hearing for Nov. 30.  1230
