BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin on Monday called for religious believers' role in promoting the country's economic development and social stability.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks when meeting with heads of national religious groups.He urged religious groups in the country to pool the wisdom and strength of believers to explore ways of helping promote economic and social development.He also asked them to help consolidate harmonious religious relations and help religious people build up national consciousness, civic consciousness and legal consciousness to ensure social harmony and stability.During the meeting, Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee,bid greetings to religious believers for the upcoming Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.He said 2009 was an important year for the country's religious work as the Party's basic policies on religious work were well implemented and people's religious freedom was fully ensured.He said 2010 was a key year to cope with the financial crisis and it was also of great significance for the country's harmony and stability in the religious circle.

CANBERRA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Queensland mining magnate Clive Palmer said Saturday his company has secured Australia's largest coal export deal with China.The Resourcehouse chairman said the company had reached a 20-year agreement with one of China's largest power companies, China Power International Development, the flagship company of China Power Investment Corporation (CPI)."This deal with CPI is Australia's biggest ever export contract," Palmer said in a statement."This is Australia's largest single, non-syndicated, finance deal and the interest from China highlights the strength of the project and the benefits for Queensland and Australia in developing a new world class coal region such as the Galilee Basin," he told reporters."There will be four underground mines and two open cut mines," he said.Meanwhile, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said there was some environmental red tape to negotiate before the project was approved but she did not expect any last-minute problems."It is world demand which is making it a commercial opportunity," Bligh said.More than 100 million additional tons of coal could be exported every year from Queensland because of new projects under consideration by the state government.

ISTANBUL, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who attends a regional summit on Afghanistan here as the special representative of Chinese President Hu Jintao, pledged that China, as a neighbor that shares friendship dated back to antiquity, will continue to support Afghanistan's reconstruction."China has actively supported, promoted and participated in Afghanistan's post-war peace and reconstruction effort. Look ahead, China will continue to give support to Afghanistan within its capacity," Yang said in his remarks at the Istanbul Summit on Friendship and Cooperation in the Heart of Asia.Yang noted that since 2002, China has cancelled all mature debts owed by the Afghan government and provided a total of more than 900 million yuan (about 132 million U.S. dollars) grant assistance.He said China has launched a large number of assistance programs in Afghanistan to help improve people's lives, including a series of big projects such as the Jomhuri Hospital (Republican Hospital) and the Parwan irrigation project, which have made a positive impact in the country's reconstruction process.China has also trained more than 500 Afghan government officials in a broad range of areas, including diplomacy, economy and trade, medical and health care, finance, tourism, agriculture and counternarcotics, according to Yang.China announced last year it will turn all its previously committed 75-million-U.S. dollar concessional loans into grant assistance, to be provided to Afghanistan over a five-year period.Yang said the first tranche of funds was already delivered in 2009, and the remaining 60 million U.S. dollars will be made available in the coming four years."In addition, we will keep on assisting Afghanistan in such areas as vocational training and human resources development," Yang added.Hosted by Turkey, the Istanbul summit was also attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi and Tajikistan Foreign Minister Hamrohon Zarifi.Yang said China highly appreciates Turkey's efforts in addressing the issue of Afghanistan and supports the tripartite cooperation among Turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan.He praised the progress Afghanistan has made in its reconstruction."Over the past eight years, we have seen how the Afghan people have risen to challenge and worked unyieldingly to rebuild their country. Afghanistan has gradually recovered from the traumas of war and scored commendable achievements in institution building, economic development and external relations," Yang said.He hailed that the successful presidential election held by the Afghan people in 2009 was of special significance, as it marked an important step forward towards the goal of "Afghanistan run by the Afghans."However, Yang pointed out that Afghanistan still faces many daunting challenges, as the security situation remains volatile, the process of economic reconstruction is slow and people's livelihood needs urgent improvement."Afghanistan is at a critical juncture," said Yang, calling on countries in the region and the international community to step up efforts to support Afghanistan. BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman Thursday said the U.S.- China relationship is mature and stable enough to weather differences between the two countries.Huntsman made the remarks in his speech, "2010: The Year of Decision," at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing.The ambassador thought 2010 would be "the most important year in the history of the Sino-U.S. relations," as the two sides had to take action and make real progress on pressing global challenges like economic recovery and climate change.The China-U.S relationship had a good start after President Obama took office last year.However, U.S arms sales to Taiwan and U.S leaders' meetings with the ** Lama posed problems."I've seen enough ups and downs to know that the recent turbulence we've experienced is part of a natural cycle. Our relationship is mature and stable enough to weather our differences," said Huntsman in his half-hour speech.Huntsman said he was confident the two countries would work through their differences through dialogue, and they would be able to get on with the global challenges."Together we can lay the foundation for another 30 years of economic growth and stability in our countries, and in the world," he said."I am convinced that blue skies are already on the horizon," he said.He expected the bilateral relationship would regain the "high cruising altitude" of last year by the opening of the Shanghai World Expo in May.He was also confident the two sides would make real progress on the global challenges when they met for the second round of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (SED) and when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the United States this year.
