This isn't the first time Americans have been politically divided. Regardless of who's in the White House and no matter where you stand politically, experts say the only way we unify is to respect one another's opinions and to start listening to each other.Dr. Richelle Moen is a psychologist and therapist. It's her job to help people communicate. She's also an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In therapy, she says two-way conversations are important.“One rule of thumb is that family and friends are more important in the long run than the actual issues,” said Moen. “We’re not going to change the other person. Getting angry or having heated discussions is not going to change anybody’s beliefs or position.”Relationships have faltered. Couples are fighting. Neighbors are angry at one another.“The important part here and the question we should ask ourselves is who are we going to talk about with this and at what time?” said Moen. “So, is talking to Grandpa or Uncle Bob the right person to start with when the kids are around, when they’re so strong, so opinionated and get angry very quickly?”She also says that when you're headed to a gathering, where you know politics will come up, have a plan.“We not only want to know who we’re going to talk to, how we can be respectful and validate what they’re saying and giving our point of view if they want it, but if it starts getting heated or we find ourselves getting more and more intense inside, we need a plan to deep breathe, calm ourself down, and if we can’t, we need to say ‘can we stop this conversation right now.’”This isn't the first time Americans have gone through this.“JFK and Nixon in 1960,” said Capri Cafaro.Cafaro is an executive in residence at American University and a former minority leader of the Ohio Senate. 1960 saw a close election, one that came with a lot of skepticism. But perhaps the most relatable election is that of Bush and Gore in 2000.“It was a notable instance where the person who won the popular vote, in this case Al Gore, is not the person that won the Electoral College and that I think put a lot of people off of government, of politics and trying to reevaluate fairness and ethics in government.”What's driving the divide, Cafaro says, is a growing and ever mounting distrust of everything and of each other.“We’ve created such a polarized narrative over the last few years and these siloed echo chambers of media in many instances because of technology, whether it’s social media being able to cherry pick the type of news you consume,” she said.But she says we can get past it by leading by example, which Moen says is currently not happening.“There’s been some modeling that hasn’t been the greatest. What we know with the political research done back in the 60s, only 12% of ads were negative in 2012, only 14% are positive.”So, now what? Moen says that's up to us. It starts with those holiday family gatherings you're about to have. Listen. Respect each other's opinions. Regulate your emotions. Put politics aside and find common ground. There’s been talk of a “blue wave” heading into the midterm elections, with more Democrats energized and ready to vote. But just two weeks before the midterms, a new poll suggests the wave could be crashing.The lead in the election polls Democrats once had has fallen. In many of the battleground House or Representatives races, candidates from both parties are running almost even, according to a Washington Post poll.Another report finds Republicans are outpacing Democrats in early voting in key states, many of which are seeing record turnout.President Donald Trump outlined what he feels has sparked the turnaround.“This will be the election of the caravan, Kavanaugh, law and order, tax cuts and common sense,” Trump says.Even Democrats are downplaying the chances of a “blue wave.”“If the election were held today, the Democrats would handily win the House,” Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, says. “I can only speak in the present tense because you never know in a couple of weeks.”The president just announced he'll hold at least another ten rallies before the midterms, meaning he will have spoken at more than 30 rallies in the final five weeks of the campaign.President Barack Obama is also on the road, campaigning for Democrats.“The consequences of anybody here not turning out and doing everything you can to get your friends neighbor's family to turn out, the consequences of you staying home would be profoundly dangerous to this country and to our democracy,” Obama said during a recent rally.In these final couple weeks, both parties are having rallies across the country to motivate their base and to see which party can convince more of their voters to turnout. 1733

Thursday marks six months since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global health emergency. The coronavirus is only the sixth time a global health emergency has been declared.Compared to the previous five emergencies, experts say the coronavirus pandemic is easily the most severe.Here in the United States, we’re still far behind when it comes to recovery. Health security experts at Johns Hopkins University say we have seen some success in treating the virus, but there hasn't been much success in responding to it, especially when it comes to testing.“Many states did not invest in testing and many states did not invest in contact tracers, so when you see cases spiral out of control in certain states, it's not surprising to me,” Dr. Amesh Adalja of Johns Hopkins University said. “That's exactly the recipe you would set up if you wanted cases to rise.”Dr. Adalja says in order to tackle the spread of the virus, the US needs to prioritize testing, tracing and isolating.Health experts across the country have also signed a letter calling on the US to shut down the country and start over. The letter includes a list of recommendations for what's needed before cities can reopen. It calls for enhanced testing capabilities, more contact tracers and more personal protective equipment.Dr. Bill Hanage at Harvard University was one of those who signed the letter, and says safely reopening can happen, “If we look at countries like New Zealand, South Korea, then you can actually see that it is possible with sustained action to shut down, strangle the virus, throw it back to the sea, and then you can open with substantial amounts of normal economy.”Hanage adds that while it can be done, it's yet to be seen if the US is capable of doing this.The Association of American Medical Colleges has also offered a road map that would change the country's approach to the pandemic. It calls for some of the same things other doctors have asked for -- testing, tracing, and more PPE.It also goes further and asks for broad health insurance coverage for people who have lost their jobs, remedying drug shortages, and establishing national standards on face coverings. 2188

There are now more than 8 million positive cases of COVID-19 in the US since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University.There are more than 218,000 deaths in the country from the coronavirus.Cases are climbing around the country, as some states report numbers of daily new positive cases as large as they saw earlier this summer.Two states on Friday, Illinois and North Carolina, reported their highest daily COVID-19 positive case count ever. Several states are reporting a low number of available hospital beds in their ICUs, including Michigan and North Dakota.Across the country, there have been more than 53,000 new daily cases each day for the last week. That represents an increase of more than 55 percent in just over a month, according to CNN.Health experts worry this surge of cases could indicate a tough winter ahead. They remind people to take precautions: wash hands, wear a mask, avoid crowds, and remain socially distant from others."They sound very simple, but people are not doing that and that's why we have an uptick in cases," Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, told CBS News this week.
