SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High School sports in the fall has been a big question mark due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and next week, the California Scholastic Federation is expected to make a decision as to whether the students athletes will be taking the field. But one local head coach is encouraging parents to step up, and voice their opinion on the matter. Scripps Ranch football coach Marlon Gardinera, has formed "Letfamiliesdecide.org"."So if everybody really wants the kids in school, what we have to do is give them a voice in letting them get back to high school sports. As an example, at Scripps Ranch High School, ninety-four percent of the families said not only do they want their kids back in school, but they want them on campus."Currently, coach Gardinera says the number of players has increased at the Falcons summer's workouts"Parents are deciding they want their kids on campus. Thirty percent more of them are sending their kids out to football this summer. The kids have been cooped up in the house, and parents want them participating in a controlled activity."Of course with safety being the number one priority."We take everyone's temperature, and we ask them five symptom related questions before we let them loose. They arrive and leave with masks."So without a doubt, the sixty-four thousand dollar question is this. Should sports begin in the fall if students are not back on campus? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighting cameras are blanketing California, shattering its goal of installing 650 cameras across California by 2022, thanks to the efforts of a UC San Diego professor and his team.The camera system, called ALERTWildfire, came from a need to confirm the ignition of a fire, and coordinate assets to be the most efficient and safe for the community.Geology Professor Neal Driscoll at UC San Diego is the Co-Director of ALERTWildfire and said just a couple of years ago it was a slow process confirming a fire sparked in the county."We’d have to send an engine to a mountaintop or launch an aircraft to verify ignition," Driscoll said.That wasted valuable time. ALERTWildfire allows fire command centers to find and assess a blaze with a few clicks on a computer.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said they look for key information from the cameras, "really just trying to hone in on where this fire is, what its potential is and who might need to be evacuated."The system launched in 2017 and now San Diego has 35 cameras across the county.The cameras pan, tilt and zoom on command and have a time-lapse function."The technology isn’t just good situational awareness, it’s also using that data and that information in real-time to evacuate people and save some more lives," Shoots said.Driscoll said they are continuing to grow the program, "locally I think we’ll cap out at 45-50."Shoots said they're working to grow to more than 1,000 cameras across the state by 2022 and Driscoll hopes to expand to other states like Colorado and Idaho.Driscoll advises the public to get familiar with the website, so in case of an emergency, you can be aware of your surroundings and evacuate safely.Driscoll also advised the public to RAP: Reduce risk, Activate your alerts, and Practice your plan. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Environmental groups are increasing pressure on members of Congress to support the Green New Deal.On Friday, about two dozen demonstrators rallied outside Democratic Congressman Scott Peters' office in the UTC area to get him to sign on. "We're intent on pushing forward with what seems to be the strongest commitment to making important action on climate change by our government," said Karl Aldinger, a Fallbrook resident and member of the a group called Sunrise Movement.Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced the deal in February. It lays out a series of goals, including getting the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030. It also touches on issues surrounding education and wages. Peters, who represents the 52nd District, is the only San Diego County democrat not to sign onto the deal. He said he prefers a more direct approach through specific actions that can get bipartisan approval. Peters pointed to a series of bills that just passed out of committee."We don't want to scare away people from solutions," Peters said. "This is a problem we only have 10 or 12 years to solve. It can't be done just by Democrats, it can't be done just by liberals. It has to be done by everybody."Political analyst John Dadian says more moederate approaches could play a hand in the 2020 election."This dovetails into why we're seeing, in the last 10 years, what's increased every cycle, the rise of the independent, because the independents are saying I don't want to be Republican or Democrat, I don't always agree, I want to make my own decisions," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded.But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Democrat Ammar-Campa Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa have emerged as the favorites to represent East County's 50th Congressional District, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. The 10News/Union-Tribune scientific poll comes one week before the March primary, in which voters will head to the polls for the first time since Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one count of felony campaign fraud. The poll, of 552 likely voters, shows Campa-Najjar, the lone household Democrat, leading the field with 35 percent of the vote. Former Congressman Issa, a Republican, comes in second with 21 percent, with former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio at 15 percent. The poll had 12 percent undecided and State Sen. Brian Jones, a Republican, at 7 percent. 837
