Cleveland Police say a 16-year-old boy wound up in the ICU at Metro Health because his dad forced him to confront a bully.Police put a warrant out for 36-year-old Carlos Conner, wanted on a felony child endangerment charge.According to a police report, last week Conner forced his 16-year-old son to fight his bully on the street.“My nephew seen the guy who’s been bullying him for a year and a half and he jumped out the car,” said Conner’s sister, Cynthia Conner.Conner says the police report doesn't tell the whole story and that her nephew took it upon himself to fight the other teenager. Both are students at James Rhodes High School.“I think he did the parental, smart thing, let them fight and said ok, after the fight was over, said ok, the fight was over, took his child and took him to the hospital,” she said.Except, when the 16 year old arrived at the hospital, police say it was discovered he had bleeding in his brain and was taken to the intensive care unit. The bullying, according to Conner, started on social media. Her brother, she says, made numerous attempts to stop it, but the problem was never solved.“This has been going on for a year and half, you don’t think my brother could’ve forced him to get out the car a year and a half ago? Here, here he is, I’m going to bring you right to him, fight him. My brother’s not a bad guy,” she said.Conner claims this was in fact a dispute between her brother and his ex-wife who filed the police report.According to the police report, detectives did not get a statement from the 16 year old and have not yet identified the other teen involved. 1616

COACHELLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The woman arrested for dumping puppies in a trash can in Coachella was sentenced to a year in jail, according to KABC. Deborah Sue Culwell, 59, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and abandonment charges. Culwell was arrested after surveillance video captured a white jeep pull up behind a store on the 49000 block of Grapefruit Boulevard as a woman exited with a plastic bag. The video then shows the woman dumping the bag between trash cans.RELATED: Woman caught on video dumping bag of puppies in CoachellaInside the bag were seven puppies, all about three days old and believed to be terrier mixes. An employee at the store contact animal services after a passerby discovered the bag next to the .“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” Department of Animal Services Commander Chris Mayer said. “His actions were humane and heroic.”“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Mayer added. “Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”All but one of the puppies survived, according to KABC. 1168

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Tommie Smith made history with a gesture in 1968, when he raised a single black-gloved fist on the Olympic podium after placing first in the 200-meter race. The silent, peaceful act of protest on behalf of oppressed people across the globe -- particularly in South Africa, where Apartheid reigned, and in the United States, where the Civil Rights Act was just four years old -- attracted censure, professional blacklisting and even death threats from people who witnessed it.That didn't stop Smith from fighting racial inequality wherever he saw it.Half a century later, it still hasn't."The darker the skin, the more problems you have when it comes to equity, and I'm there to find out why," Smith said Tuesday night at Cincinnati's National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. "Why can't we do better with the emergencies that's needed to keep people alive?"He partnered with Cradle Cincinnati to raise awareness of Ohio's disproportionately high infant mortality rate among black children. According to the Ohio Department of Health, black babies are nearly three times more likely than white to die before their first birthday. This holds true across all parental income levels, which might otherwise be an indicator of the type of medical care mothers and newborns do or do not receive. Experts aren't exactly sure why this happens or how to fix it. Smith, whose parents lost two babies before he was born, isn't either. That's why he believes it's so important to keep drawing attention to the problem. Raising awareness can keep pressure on people with the power to investigate and make changes, and it can help black parents learn about an often-unspoken danger."There's nobody else to be their front door," he said. "I've always been a front door."Smith's speech kicked off a Cincinnati Children's Hospital-organized summit surrounding the issue of infant mortality. The event, which will run through Wednesday at the Duke Energy Convention Center, was expected to attract over 1,000 health care and social work professionals.RELATED: How Tommie Smith ended up playing for the Bengals. 2151
