(AP) — California police say a homeless woman sleeping in a cardboard box was struck and killed by heavy machinery operated by a road crew clearing a homeless camp.The Modesto Bee reported Wednesday that 33-year-old Shannon Marie Bigley was killed Aug. 1 in a grassy field alongside a highway where a homeless camp was built.Modesto police say the incident occurred while a California Department of Transportation crew was attempting to clear the encampment about 90 miles east of San Francisco. NASA released data on Monday indicating that the polar ice cap around the North Pole shrank to near record-low levels last week following an arctic heat wave.The ice began to melt in earnest as Siberia was an estimated 14 to 18 degrees above normal during the spring.“It was just really warm in the Arctic this year, and the melt seasons have been starting earlier and earlier,” said Nathan Kurtz, a sea ice scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The earlier the melt season starts, the more ice you generally lose.”The white color of ice causes sunlight to be reflected. But when the ice melts, the ground absorbs more sunlight, which causes the earth to heat up.2020 marked only the second time on record that the minimum sea ice dropped below 1.5 million square miles.“As the sea ice cover extent declines, what we’re seeing is we’re continuing to lose that multiyear ice,” said Mark Serreze, director of National Snow and Ice Data Center. “The ice is shrinking in the summer, but it’s also getting thinner. Mysterious packages are popping up on Medicare recipients’ doorsteps and the Federal Trade Commission said it’s part of a rising scam."That’s a back brace,” Anna Miller, a 94-year-old Medicare recipient said as she rifled through a package delivered to her home.Inside the box was a back brace, shoulder brace, and a couple of other pieces of medical equipment, the items came bundled together in a box addressed to Miller."They must have thought I was in bad shape to send me both of them in one box,” Miller joked.She said she never ordered any kind of medical device."I thought it was terrible because I figured it was false,” Miller said.As it turns out, her Medicare account got charged for the back and shoulder brace. It’s a scam the FTC said is on the rise targeting Medicare dollars and personal information.Miller reached out to Medicare to see what was going on. "They just said they'd look into it and they questioned me,” she said.Medicare followed up, sending a letter confirming an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the FTC is warning Medicare recipients to be aware.If someone calls and says they're with Medicare and offers you a “free” or “low cost” brace, hang up right away.Medicare will never call you with such an offer. Never give your Medicare or other personal information over the phone to anyone.If you do need a brace or medical equipment, talk to your doctor. NBC News announced Wednesday that President Donald Trump would participate in a town hall-style event on Thursday — the day that he and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden were scheduled to have a debate prior to Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis.NBC says the event, hosted by Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, will take place in Miami with "a group of Florida voters."The network also said that it had received a statement from Dr. Clifford Lane, the Clinical Director at the National Institutes of Health, who said that both he and Dr. Anthony Fauci had cleared Trump to participate.The records reportedly reviewed by Lane and Fauci included a PCR COVID-19 test.
