SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 60-year-old serial rapist in Northern California whose crimes went undetected for nearly three decades was sentenced to 897 years in state prison. The Sacramento Bee reported that Roy Charles Waller, dubbed the “NorCal Rapist,” showed no emotion Friday and sat with eyes closed during sentencing. He declined to address the victims or the court. A jury in Sacramento convicted Waller of raping nine women in their homes between 1991 and 2006 in six counties. Investigators used DNA technology and genealogy websites to zero in on Waller and arrested him more than two years ago. A woman raped in 2006 testified that the day Waller was arrested was the first time she could take a shower without fear. Waller says he is innocent. 764

ROCHESTER, Indiana — The woman accused of crashing into four Indiana children as they crossed the street to get on a school bus pleaded not guilty Thursday morning, according to ABC 57 News in South Bend. The suspect, 24-year-old Alyssa Shepherd, had previously told police she saw the lights from the bus but didn't realize what it was until the kids were in front of her. She has been charged with three counts of reckless homicide and one count of disregarding the stop arms on a school bus causing injury. The crash happened Oct. 30, near the intersection of State Road 25 and CR 400 N in Fulton County.Police say Shepherd was driving a Toyota Tacoma on State Road 25 sometime after 7 a.m. when she allegedly "disregarded" the stop arm and lights on a stopped school bus in front of a mobile home park, striking four kids who were crossing the street to board the bus. Alivia Stahl, 9, and her twin brothers, Xzavier and Mason Ingle, 6, were all pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth child was also hit. (AP) — Ron Dellums, a fiery anti-war activist who championed social justice as Northern California's first black congressman, died Monday from cancer, according to a longtime adviser. He was 82.Dellums died at his home in Washington.A former Marine who got his start in politics on the City Council of the liberal enclave of Berkeley, he defeated a labor-backed Democrat to win his first election to Congress in 1970. He retired in 1998 and was later elected mayor of his native Oakland in 2006."He was absolutely committed to what was right and what was just and believed that you had to do whatever you could to fight for that," said Dan Lindheim, who learned of Dellums' death from his wife, Cynthia Dellums.A self-identified Democratic socialist, Dellums was at the center of most major liberal movements of the 1970s and 1980s. He led the drive to sanction South Africa during apartheid, challenged U.S. entry into wars, opposed increased military spending and helped start the Congressional Black Caucus.During Dellums' first campaign for Congress in 1970, then-Vice President Spiro Agnew branded him an "out-and-out radical."Later in his victory speech, Dellums wryly referred to Agnew, a Republican, as his public relations agent, according to the U.S. House of Representatives' archives.The Rev.
