(KGTV) - Residents of a small mobile home park across the street from the proposed Newland Sierra development, Measure B on the March ballot, say they fear a "yes" vote to approve the project could do irreparable damage to their community.Deer Springs Oaks is made up of 32 mobile homes off Deer Springs Road, directly across the street from the Newland Sierra site. That plan, if voters approve, would allow for around 2,100 new homes, along with open space and infrastructure changes. Residents of Deer Springs Oaks, funded by the nearby Golden Door Spa, have been making the case to voters that Measure B will make a bad traffic situation worse and create a dangerous trap in a wildfire zone. But they also worry that the project could have a more direct impact on their homes. The building of Newland Sierra would require the widening of Deer Springs Road, as well as changes to the nearby interchange with I-15. While Newland Sierra developers say these will not affect the mobile home park, the residents say they are not getting any guarantees from Newland Sierra, the County, or CalTrans."We don't know what they're going to do, how they're going to do it," said resident Georgeann Higgins. "They're so arrogant as to not inform us. These are our homes." Lawyers representing many of the residents obtained plans for some of the alternatives being considered by CalTrans. At least two would cause major changes to Deer Springs Oaks, including the possibility of residents losing property and a road being moved to go through the center of the complex."They impact the park big time," said resident Tony Eason. "They would destroy the park."A spokesperson from Newland Sierra told 10News that the maps being used by the residents are outdated. He sent 10News at statement: “This is just another desperate attempt by the Golden Door Spa and its army of lawyers to try to confuse and scare voters. This alternative was one of more than a dozen road improvement alternatives that was studied. It was ultimately rejected by CalTrans and is no longer an option. The real truth is that Measure B will create affordably priced homes for working families with open space, parks and trails - a better choice than the current General Plan that permits a two million square foot mega-commercial development, mansions and parking lots." She closed the restaurant Sunday afternoon as soon as she found out her employee tested positive."Ironically, one of my best employees with the mask, like she never took that mask down," Kris Buchanan.Buchanan arranged for her staff of roughly 40 people to get tested for the virus antibodies Monday afternoon. If they test positive for antibodies, she'll pay for them to get the coronavirus test.The organic restaurant will reopen July 3, but only for pick up and delivery. Buchanan says the harassment her staff faced from some customers refusing to wear a mask isn't worth it."People take serious offense to that, I think, because of the health issue or maybe some sort of politically charged feeling about it, I don't know, " said Buchanan.She says fellow restaurant owners are dealing with similar issues."I'm friends with a few restaurant owners in Encinitas, and it's the same thing, coming in with that fake Facebook card that went around," said Buchanan.She said while most have been supportive, some customers have also made social distancing even more difficult by complaining about where they were seated."It's just a whole bunch of rigmarole here you're just trying to get their order and figure out if they want gluten-free or regular bread and you have this added layer of nonsense on top of it," said Buchanan.Since the pandemic hit, business is down roughly 50%, but Buchanan said her employees are her priority."More than the money, it's just worth me keeping my staff happy and safe," said Buchanan.GOODONYA will reopen Friday July 3, at 7 a.m. 1757

ENCINITAS (CNS) - The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will take in 23 puppies, adolescent, and adult dogs from the Mexican state of Sonora this morning -- the latest in a series of lifesaving transports from Rescue Fenix in Obregon, working hand-in-paw with the humane society and Greater Good Charities."These dogs were rescued from the streets and taken to the Rescue Fenix shelter," said John Van Zante, RCHS spokesman. "They live in outdoor colony kennels. The puppies and smaller dogs compete for food with every other dog. Many of them would not survive if they were not taken in by Rescue Fenix then transferred out of there."The dogs began their 17-hour ride to Tijuana early Friday morning. They crossed the border early Saturday morning and then got some rest at the home of a Rescue Fenix volunteer in Escondido.The dogs are scheduled to be transferred to RCHS in Encinitas on Saturday morning. Rescue Fenix volunteer Georgina Parsa, who lives in Escondido, will complete the transfer."Our Medical team will perform examinations before the dogs are settled into their new kennels with food, water, and their first soft bedding," said Judi Sanzo, RCHS president. "Some of them will go into foster care with trained RCHS volunteers. In the coming days the dogs will receive more extensive exams, vaccinations, medical treatment including spay or neuter, and each dog will be micro chipped before becoming available for adoption."Sanzo said the relationship between Rancho Coastal Humane Society and Rescue Fenix is new, but it's already proven successful."From the first transfer, we were told that the dogs and puppies who arrived here would not have survived if we had not taken them.
