SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after two people were stabbed in the San Diego River Tuesday night. According to police, the stabbing happened on the 500 block of Morena Boulevard around 6:30 p.m. between Old Town and Linda Vista.After the stabbing, the suspect, only described as a man wearing a white shirt, fled the scene. Despite a police helicopter and officers on foot, the suspect managed to escape.Lt. Mike Ramsay said the two victims were hispanic men, ages 18 and 19. One was stabbed in the chest and the other in the stomach. They were taken to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Ramsay described their condition as "serious but stable."Police closed off Morena Boulevard near Interstate 8 as they searched for the suspect, creating heavy traffic in the area. 10News will continue to keep you updated as soon as we receive more information. 882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, concerns were raised and the release of police body camera video was requested after San Diego police officers reportedly shot a man on Sunday after they arrested him. Police say he managed to get out of his handcuffs and accessed a police gun after he was left in a patrol vehicle.On Monday, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown told 10News that officers were called to the Westgate Hotel on Sunday night for a report of a man who threatened security workers. After officers reportedly took in the 25-year-old Hispanic man, they say he slipped out of his cuffs while in the patrol unit.“It does happen but you know there's a tricky line to walk between having the handcuffs too tight where they can't come off but that also means that they can cause damage to a person that's under arrest and that's not our goal,” said Lt. Brown.She added that the suspect then reportedly broke a divider in the vehicle and grabbed a backup gun from an officer's gear bag that was in another area of the vehicle, all while he was alone in the vehicle and officers were away to process paperwork. “They were in the area of the vehicle. It's not like they were hundreds of yards away. They do maintain visual contact and there are other officers that are in the area,” she told ABC10 News.Once officers noticed, police say he fired a least one round after refusing their commands to drop the gun. They report that they fired back and struck him in the torso, but they say he still got out of the car with the gun and ignored their commands. Officers say a police canine then took him down.Community activist Tasha Williamson said Monday that the suspect should never have been left alone. “It’s not safe for the individual who has been arrested and not safe for the officers who are leaving them in the car with weapons,” she added.She's been demanding the release of body camera video within 24 hours of the shooting, like police did last week after rounds were fired with a robbery suspect.A police spokesperson said Monday that the release of the video will take longer in this case but the department is working hard to get it out and hopes to have it released within a couple of days.“[That’s] not sufficient and what that's telling the public is that when there’s no public outcry, they'll take their time at releasing the video,” added Williamson.The suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.SDPD is investigating the officer-involved shooting. SDPD says once its investigation is completed, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. Police say the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers before the Community Review Board on Police Practices reviews the incident. Police say the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.The three officers who were involved are on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard protocol. 3161

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot and killed in San Diego’s El Cerrito neighborhood late Saturday night, San Diego Police say.Police were called to the 5700 block of El Cajon Boulevard just after 11 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a possible shooting in the area.When they arrived, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot to the head. He was taken to the hospital where he later died, according to police.Little is known about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, but police say the victim was involved in a fight with the suspect, identified as Joseph Mehlenbacher, 18.“Mehlenbacher and the gun are still outstanding. He is considered armed and dangerous,” police said in a news release.He was last seen driving a white 2002 Honda Accord with California license plate 8CJY250.Police urged the public not to approach Mehlenbacher if spotted. “Please do not make any attempt to contact Mehlenbacher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675
