(KGTV) -- Police arrested a man on suspicion of breaking into a Wells Fargo bank in Chula Vista early Thursday morning.Bank security personnel contacted Chula Vista police at around 2 a.m. after they saw a man break the front window at the branch on 1232 Broadway and enter the business.According to police, security cameras showed the man “going through the drawers behind the counters.”Police surrounded the bank as some officers entered the business. Officers arrested the man, later identified as 25-year-old Rene Torres, without incident.Police said officers at the scene determined Torres “pried open most of the cash drawers but was unable to access the vault or currency storage areas. He did cause a lot of damage to the interior of the building.”ABC 10News learned officers discovered several rolls of coins in the suspect’s backpack that police presumed to be from the bank.Torres was arrested on suspicion of burglary and booked at CVPD headquarters. Harry Orgovan is the president of the South Bay Historical Society and the Chula Vista Heritage Museum. His family and many other military families like his moved to Chula Vista during the war, tripling the population from 5,000 residents to 16,000 by 1950. "In a sense, life was simpler back then and more innocent," adds Orgovan. World War II brought an industrial revolution to Chula Vista. The Rohr Aircraft Corporation opened with as many as 11,000 employees building power units for the B-24 Liberator. CHOLLAS VIEW (KGTV) - A short pursuit ended in a crash near Gompers Preparatory School Saturday night.The pursuit started around 6:45 p.m. at 4700 Castana Street in Chollas View, police said. The suspect was wanted for speeding when they took off. The pursuit ended a few minutes later when the suspect crashed less than a mile away into a railing at Gompers Preparatory School. The suspect was arrested. No one was injured. Gompers Preparatory School is a public charter school that operates in cooperation with the University of California, San Diego.   588

(AP) — One of two men convicted of stealing a firefighter's pickup truck during the deadliest wildfire in California history has been sentenced to 41 days in jail and three years of probation.The Chico Enterprise-Record reports Robert Depalma of Concow was also ordered to pay more than ,000 in restitution at his sentencing in Butte County Superior Court on Friday.Prosecutors said Depalma and William Erlbacher stole the truck from a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection station on Nov. 8, when the wildfire broke out and largely leveled the town of Paradise and killed 86 people.Erlbacher admitted to taking the truck and Depalma admitted to driving it for several days.
