VISTA (CNS) - A Catholic priest who grabbed a seminary student's groin from behind in a restroom stall during a night of drinking at a Carlsbad restaurant was convicted of misdemeanor sexual battery Monday.A jury deliberated about two hours before finding the Rev. Juan Garcia Castillo guilty.Castillo, who had worked at St. Patrick's Church in Carlsbad since 2011, faces six months in jail and registration as a sex offender when he is sentenced Jan. 18, said Deputy District Attorney Joshua Brisbane.The 33-year-old victim -- a former Navy attorney who left the military to join the priesthood -- testified that he had met Castillo the night before the incident, which happened about 1 a.m. on Feb. 4.According to court testimony, the victim went to the restroom to be sick, and was in a stall when Castillo grabbed his genitals from behind.The victim testified that he told Castillo to go away, but the defendant came back in the stall and massaged the victim's groin in a sexual way.Castillo, 35, testified that he followed the victim into the restroom because it looked like he was going to be sick. The priest said he tried to put pressure on the victim's stomach to stop his vomiting because his mother had taught him that trick as a child.The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego suspended Castillo once it learned of the "credible allegation" against him. 1371

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Vista family is crediting their 3-year-old French Bulldog with thwarting a burglar at the front door. Last Thursday, just past noon and eight minutes after Samantha Sanchez left her home on Olive Drive, she got an alert of noise near her door.When she got home, she saw her front door, busted and wide open."Felt violated. Disturbing," said Sanchez.A motion activated camera she had just installed to monitor her dog Harley - who suffers from epilepsy and is prone to frequent seizures - had captured part of what happened. On the video, the sounds of something being jammed into the door can be heard. Harley then starts to growl. The video stops and then skips 12 seconds. In the next images, Harley is seen sitting, staring at an open door. Sanchez believes the intruder never got inside because of her 30 lb. Frenchie."Thank God for Harley," said Sanchez.When it comes to Frenchies, there are snorter and non-snorters. Harley is definitely the former."You can see how he would be mistaken for a bigger, more aggressive dog just by how loud he is," said Sanchez.Sanchez cant help but smile when she thinks about what greeted the burglar at the door."Harley is my hero. He saved us," said Sanchez.His actions unfolded even though he may have needed the saving. A fresh urine stain that day meant he likely had a seizure during or after the break-in. But this hero wouldn't be stopped. "Harley got a new bed. Harley got a new toy and sausages. Harley gets whatever he wants now," said Sanchez.Sanchez says Harley will remain on alert. VISTA (CNS) - A man who fatally beat his cousin in the front yard of an Oceanside home was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder.Joel Cardona, 37, was found guilty for the Aug. 2, 2018, death of Nestor Jurado, 37, following a trial that began last week at the Vista courthouse. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but the second-degree murder conviction means Cardona faces at least 15 years to life in state prison.Cardona was arrested on the morning of Aug. 2 during a tussle with Jurado in front of a home on Arthur Avenue, according to police and prosecutors. (CNS) - A verdict has been reached in the trial of a woman and her gun instructor who are accused of carrying out a plan to kill the woman's estranged husband.A jury has found Diana Lovejoy, 44, guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder. Welcon McDavid Jr. was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, but the reading of the verdict had to be postponed because Lovejoy passed out. Lovejoy and McDavid Jr. were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder in the Sept. 1, 2016, attack on 45-year-old Greg Mulvihill, who was wounded in the 11 p.m. shooting in Carlsbad.Police allege Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter - - who worked at a gun range where Lovejoy was taking marksmanship lessons -- called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes.Court records indicated Lovejoy and Mulvihill were in the midst of a contentious divorce, and that she had obtained a restraining order against him on accusations of emotional and sexual abuse.Mulvihill took the stand during the trial and described the moments leading up to him being shot, saying he didn't realize he'd been shot right away and, at first, he thought he felt something in his back even though he could see the shooter in front of him.Mulvihill testified about a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife.Mulvihill said he went up a remote trail in Carlsbad out of desperation, fearing Lovejoy would reopen their custody battle. He took a friend, a flashlight and a small aluminum baseball bat, but he thought he was picking up documents from a private investigator.Instead, as he approached the spot off Rancho Santa Fe Road and Avenida Soledad, he shined his flashlight around and spotted someone dressed in camouflage pointing a long gun right at him.Before he knew what was happening, Mulvihill said he was hit once in the side, the bullet exiting out his back. McDavid faces 50 years to life behind bars, and Lovejoy could be sentenced to 25 years to life.After court, the jury foreperson, Erin Reed,  told reporters the defense version of the shooting "seemed too far-fetched." 2224

(KGTV) - President Trump's endorsement Thursday to raise the minimum purchase age for assault rifles from 18 to 21 is sparking local debate.Christa Farmer, 19, has been cleaning and taking care of guns since she was 11.  Farmer bought an AR-15 when she was 18, which she uses for shooting competitions.  It's a gun Farmer is comfortable with, and she says the purchase age should stay at 18."At 18, I knew how to properly disassemble, assemble, clean, and the proper safety rules," said Farmer.Anti-gun-violence advocates like Ron Marcus want such rifles banned nationwide, but say raising the purchase age is a good step.    "The maturity range between 18 and 21, there's a lot of room for growth.  To allow that maturation process before they buy a gun is a good idea," said Marcus, Director of Public Outreach for San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention.Farmer counters with a different maturity argument.  She says she was 'mature enough' to enlist in the Army Reserve several years ago. "If we're old enough to enlist and carry these weapons, I believe we are mature and responsible enough to own them in our personal lives as well," said Farmer.Others say the two situations are different when it comes to owning AR-15s."In the military, you are subject to extreme discipline and oversight ... When they are off duty, a different story ... and they should be subject to civilian rules," said Marcus.Farmer doesn't agree with the reasoning because of the quality of the gun training in the military.As of last year, new sales of the AR-15 have been banned in the state.  Owners can still keep their old ones, but must register them with the state by June. 1727
