SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone footage recently captured a rare sighting of a blue whale off San Diego's coastline, as it swims right up to a small boat.Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching, says he's already starting to see blue whale sightings off San Diego's coastline this season. In one video he captured, a whale swims up to his boat to investigate before disappearing below the water's surface."This year is looking like much more of a normal year," Biagini said. "I think this is really going to shape up to be a really good blue whale season."He adds that an abundance of krill and pristine conditions are leading to the sightings. Blue whales generally follow where krill are swimming in coastal waters. If there's a high level of krill, the whales will typically spend the entire summer nearby.Blue whale sightings come in spurts, Biagini says, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat for whale watchers. And whale watching could be a safe alternative to sight-seeing this summer, according to Biagini. He says he's currently running private charters, so groups are limited to single household unit sizes and there's enough room for people to space out."These are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet," Biagini said. "People that get to see them, there's not many."Not a lot of information is known about the mating and breeding habits of blue whales, giving researchers even more opportunities to learn about the animals. 1498

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Fluffy, fresh snow will beckon San Diegans, and road advisories, to the mountains this weekend.Thanksgiving Day's storm brought fresh powder and rain to San Diego mountains. Areas including Julian, Descanso, Pine Valley, and Mt. Laguna saw between two and 12 inches of snow Friday, depending on elevation.Saturday, chain requirements were canceled for State route 79 just north of Interstate 8 to Sr-78/Sr-79 junction in Julian, and on Sr-78 from Banner Grade to Sr-78/Sr-79 junction in Santa Ysabel. Visitors quickly arrived in Julian Saturday, where streets were clear of snow but packed with cars:Sunrise Highway, from Pine Valley to Mt. Laguna, was scheduled to reopen on the southside between Old Highway 80 in Pine Valley to Mile post 27 at 12 p.m., though chains will be required past the 5,000 elevation level. At Palomar Mountain, State Park Rd. is closed from Upper Meadow Rd. and Bailey Meadow Rd. due to downed telephone wires.LATEST WEATHER FORECAST | CHECK TRAFFICFor areas north leading to Big Bear Mountain, a popular snow stop for San Diegans, chains were required Saturday. Highway 18 from Lucerne Valley and Highway 330 from Highland to Big Bear were both under an R3 chain requirement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite the early morning wake-up call, San Diegans still got out to catch NASA's first interplanetary rocket launch from the West Coast.San Diegans unfazed by the 4 a.m. start time broke out their cameras and looked up to the sky to catch the Atlas 5 rocket take off from Vandenberg Air Force Base just north. Some users took to Instagram, others to our 10News Weather Watchers Facebook page. Either way, photographers were happy to get out of bed and watch as the rocket soared through the morning sky. Here's a look at the view from the lens' of our local photographers:There was a slight worry over fog clouding the view for San Diegans, but clearly, those worries evaporated once the launch was given the all-clear.Atlas 5 and the InSight rocket are set to arrive at Mars on Nov. 26, 2018, around 12 p.m. Yup, NASA is that exact about the time. For two years, the InSight mission's lander and two satellites will research how the planet's terrain is formed, seismic activity, and how meteorites have affected the surface. If you happened to miss the launch of Atlas 5, we streamed it early Saturday morning on our 10News Facebook page: 1203

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hospital beds are filling up quickly with available capacity at zero in Southern California.ICE Nurse Peter Sidhu is overwhelmed. The Los Angeles County RN says their hospitals are on the brink of their limits.“We’re having an influx of patients like I’ve never seen before,” said Sidhu. “We’re running out of space. We’re converting any and every room into a patient room.”He feels more protected after getting the vaccine Thursday but says being short-staffed is a whole other threat. Sidhu also serves as treasurer for the UNAC/UHCP nurses union. He says hospitals have been facing systemic nursing shortages since the early 2000s.“You’ll be lucky to even get a restroom break. You’re on your feet, you’re running, patients are being intubated,” said Sidhu. “We don’t have enough staff. We didn’t have enough staff to take care of our patients before we had COVID.”California groups counties into five regions as part of the new stay-at-home order. On Thursday, the Southern California region available ICU capacity hit zero, even though availability for San Diego County is about 16%. That’s in part because other counties contribute to our region’s total. Inyo County only has two ICU beds open as of Dec. 18. Imperial County has no beds left.“You can open up empty wings, you can convert auditoriums, you can see what some places are doing which is parking structures and tents,” said Sidhu. “But, you can’t replace nurses.”While there are still some ICU beds open in San Diego, they’re filling up quickly. Scripps hospitals tells ABC 10News they’ve requested additional ventilators and respiratory therapists from the county.“We’ve constructed temporary negative pressure rooms, added surge tents at our emergency departments, and expanded COVID care to additional hospital floors,” said Scripps spokesperson Stephen Carpowich. For people who still aren’t being safe, Sidhu as this warning.“I’m looking at the kinds of patients that we have. They’re younger than I thought they would be. They’re healthier. And now they’re all suffering from COVID,” said Sidhu. The county says they’re holding off on some vital procedures like organ transplants and cancer surgeries in non-COVID patients to make more room. 2239
