SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Thursday that five years after it was destroyed in the Syrian civil war, the ancient Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria has been digitally reconstructed by the university library's Digital Media Lab using 3D methods and artificial intelligence applications.Inspired by a past collaboration between the library and UC San Diego's Levantine Archaeology Laboratory, the project resulted in the digital preservation of more than a dozen lost reliefs, sculptures, frescos and paintings, all made publicly available on the library's digital collections website.Destroyed in 2015, the Temple of Bel has been called one of the most important temples in the entire Middle East -- along with Lebanon's Baalbek -- and served as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient art and architecture, a statement from the library said. It attracts more than 150,000 tourists annually.Through the use of more than 3,000 publicly available digital photographs taken over the course of a decade, the library recreated the structure using Pointcloud, an online viewing platform."This project underscores the library's commitment to engaging in collaborative efforts to better understand how the university can support emerging teaching and research formats," said Roger Smith, interim associate university librarian for scholarly tools and methods at the UC San Diego Library. "It also allows the library to better plan for our role in acquiring, preserving and sharing scholarship while incorporating new media and data formats."The digital photographs used to create the virtual rendering of the Temple of Bel were sourced from open-access repositories such as the NewPalmyra project, the Roman Society, Oxford University and individual tourists, then populated into Pointcloud, which allows users to interactively explore the once- massive temple compound. Additionally, artificial intelligence applications were used to isolate the temple's important features from other elements that may have appeared in the images, such as tourists, weather conditions and foliage."This new technology has allowed the Library to combine image data from many different sources," said Scott McAvoy, manager of the Library's Digital Media Lab. "For example, a photo from a Polish tourist visiting in 2010 can be combined with a photo from a Japanese tourist visiting five years later to extract 3D features. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night following an officer-involved shooting in El Cerrito. Police say they received a call just before 8 p.m. from a 70-year-old woman who said her 52-year-old nephew attacked her with a brick at a home on the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue. Two officers responded to the scene and found the woman, who they say had been hit in the head and chest. Officers found the man in the backyard of the home and tried to arrest him, but they say he struggled.Witnesses say the suspect then picked up a shovel and started swinging at police. "He continued quickly advancing on the officers while swinging the shovel, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, while the second officer fired his service weapon," San Diego Police said in a news release. The suspect was struck by gunfire at least once and died at the scene, police say. The man's identity isn't being released at this time. The suspect’s aunt is expected to be okay and no officers were injured in the incident. The department says one of the officers is a four-year veteran of the department while the other is a 16-year veteran. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 23 people were injured Saturday night when a structure collapsed at an indoor parkour center in Barrio Logan.21 of them were children. Two were adults, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The collapse happened about 8 p.m. at Vault PK, a parkour center on Main St. and Sigsbee. Children who were above and below the structure were hurt.The injuries ranged from minor to moderate.Cory Brizendine, a parent, estimates there were about 50 kids there. They were called up to the platform for pizza."Once the majority of kids got up there the whole platform collapsed," he said.Shannon O'Brien was among the adults on the platform. "It was scary," she said.  She said it was a place parents sit to watch their kids, and she thought it seemed stable.  831

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A coalition of some of San Diego's biggest business and labor groups wants the city to enact Measure C, the hotel-tax increase that did not generate the necessary support during the March primary.The measure would have raised the city's hotel tax by as much as 3.25% to pay for expanding the convention center, adding services for the homeless, and funding road repair. The measure failed to get the two-thirds vote California law requires for many tax increases. "Sixty-five percent of the people voted for it, that's an overwhelming majority of the voters," said Betsy Brennan, CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, a member of the coalition. "To me that speaks to the need and the desire for people to want to support this measure."The measure may, however, have new life. Two recent court cases involving Upland and San Francisco are giving supporters hope that Measure C can be enacted with a 50-percent plus one majority. It's because Measure C was a citizens' initiative, and there is now a legal precedent that tax increases that got to the ballot through signature drives can pass with a simple majority. “Measure C was overwhelmingly supported by San Diego voters in March, and we believe the will of the people — both the voters and the citizens who placed Measure C on the ballot — should be enacted," said a statement from the coalition, attributed to executives from the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Authority and San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council. "Reducing homelessness, repairing roads and investing in our local economy are just as important as it was in March, if not more so. We believe in this cause and will continue to pursue Measure C’s implementation.”The coalition says it will continue to pursue Measure C's implementation. That could involve suing the city over the measure. The City Council itself could take action but discussed it behind closed doors last week without taking any action. Others, however, say enacting Measure C would send the wrong message to voters, who entered the polls March 3 understanding the proposition needs a two-thirds vote. "There are people out there who say my vote doesn't matter. Changing the goalposts after the election would prove that to be true," said Christopher Rice Wilson, associate director at Alliance San Diego, a community empowerment organization that did not take a position on Measure C.
