SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bicyclist riding with a group of cyclists was seriously injured Saturday when he was struck by a motorcycle in Pacific Beach, police said.The collision happened at 3:14 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.A 23-year-old man riding a 2017 Harley Davidson Sportster was southbound in the 4200 block of Ingraham as a group of cyclists were eastbound in the 1500 block of Reed Avenue, Buttle said.The cyclists entered the intersection and the motorcycle struck one of them, a 49-year-old man, the officer said.The motorcyclist suffered road rash to his right leg, Buttle said. The bicyclist suffered a broken left femur and broken ribs. Medics took the cyclist to a hospital.Officers from the SDPD traffic division were investigating the collision, Buttle said.Ingraham was closed in both directions at Thomas and Oliver avenues and was expected to last a couple of hours, the SDPD said. 1012

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A head-on collision Friday in Poway injured three people, one of them seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital.The collision occurred about 2 p.m. in the 15800 block of Poway Road, according to Sgt. David Toner of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Upon arrival, deputies found both vehicles, Mazda coupe and a Nissan Sentra, with major front-end damage, Toner said.The investigation revealed the Mazda was eastbound on Poway Road and had drifted into the westbound lane when the collision occurred, according to the sergeant.The 25-year-old woman driving the Nissan and her 1-year-old son were taken to a hospital as a precaution, while the driver of the Mazda, a 28-year- old man, was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Toner said.MAP: Traffic conditions throughout San DiegoNeither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as factors in the collision, he said. 929

SAN DIEGO — Medical workers from all over San Diego made their way into SDCCU Stadium Wednesday to pick up free Personal Protective Equipment for their small and medium sized practices.The workers got free hand sanitizer, N95 masks, surgical masks, gloves and gowns. "It's really hard to find in stores, online, it's all out, everywhere," said Juana Vasquez, medical assistant at La Mesa Family Medical Groups, who was picking up supplies.Volunteers from the San Diego County Medical Society, UCSD Medical School and the Mira Mesa High School football team handed drivers boxes of the gear in the stadium's parking lot. Medical organizations of 50 or fewer are eligible, and more than 500 of them registered for the event. Dr. Holly Yang, a hospice and palliative care specialist at Scripps and president of the San Diego County Medical Society, said larger hospital systems have been able to source the necessary PPE for its staff. For smaller operations, however, it has been a challenge."Everyone wants to take care of patients," Yang said. "We should not in this country have to be afraid for ourselves and our families. We should have the right equipment. It’s completely inexcusable that this far into the pandemic that that is not available and I’m so grateful that we are able to do this for our small practices."The items came available due to Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old woman who succumbed to some type of medical emergency -- possibly a drug overdose -- and became gravely ill after being arrested in University City last week died in a hospital today, authorities reported.Aleah Jenkins was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center nine days after being taken into custody, according to San Diego police.On the afternoon of Nov. 27, Jenkins was riding in a vehicle that was pulled over in the 3700 block of La Jolla Village Drive, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.After determining that she was the subject of an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of methamphetamine, officers arrested Jenkins. While still at the scene of the traffic stop, Jenkins became ill and vomited."The officers called for paramedics, but (Jenkins) said she had only had an upset stomach, so medics were canceled," Dobbs said.Jenkins was then taken to downtown SDPD headquarters, where, while being processed for booking into county jail, she passed out, according to police."Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and called for medical assistance," the lieutenant said.Paramedics took over the emergency aid and rushed Jenkins in for hospital care."During the course of the medical intervention, controlled substances were found concealed in (Jenkins') clothing," Dobbs said this afternoon."At this point, there is no indication any force was used on (her)."A cause-of-death ruling will remain on hold pending autopsy results.Police, however, believe that Jenkins may have suffered a drug overdose, according to Dobbs.The officers who conducted the traffic stop during which Jenkins was taken into custody have been identified as Nicholas Casciola and Jason Taub.
