San Diego (KGTV)- For many people who live on a fixed income buying groceries may be a challenge. But now, 95,000 San Diegans receiving Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, will be able to apply for the CalFresh program (food stamps). “Individuals receiving SSI receives no more than 0 a month,” says Amanda Schultz Brocheo, with the San Diego Hunger Coalition. “For the majority, of SSI recipients, this all the money they have.”In San Diego, 1 in 11 older adults don’t have enough food to eat. “In some cases, we’ve heard of SSI recipients that will pull out a calendar and circle the days they are going to choose not to eat.”The San Diego Hunger Coalition says they are happy about the expansion but say the amount per day the is less than a day. “We determined that here in San Diego County the average CalFresh allotment is .07 a day.” This week also marks CalFresh Challenge Week. The organization encourages San Diegans to try living off a day for food. It’s meant to bring awareness to the food insecurities around the county. “We know that the CalFresh program is our strongest tool to for fighting hunger and also recognize that the current allotment is fairly small,” says Brocheo. “It makes it fairly difficult for people to live on that amount. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- There's a new requirement that large California counties have to meet before they can advance on the state's color-coded COVID-19 reopening system.State health officials say the "health equity metric" will help reduce infection rates among vulnerable populations.Sunday, San Diego County health officials opened another drive up testing site in Chula Vista. Local leaders say they've been targeting disadvantaged communities with education, outreach, and testing since the start of the pandemic."About 34% of our county population is Latino, but about 66% of the cases, we saw that early on, and that's why we took the action of developing the South Bay Saturation Strategy for testing. We have sites in every community in the South Bay," said Nick Macchione, director of the Health and Human Services Agency for San Diego County.Counties with more than 106,000 residents will be divided into quartiles based on income, education, and other factors gathered in census tracts.The goal is to bring the infection rates in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in line with the county's overall rate."Now they need to make sure that not only does their test positivity for the whole county, their adjusted case rate, but also their test positivity in the lowest quartile in the Healthy Places Index for the county all need to meet the criteria for the least restrictive tier," said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California's health secretary.Ghaly said counties will need to show that they're directing money and resources to help the communities hardest hit."It's not just the test positivity, that's the piece that helps counties move forward or slows them down in moving through the tier system, but we are working with counties on a broader strategy to focus on equity," said Ghaly.Ghaly said failing to meet the metric cannot push a county back into a more restrictive tier, but can slow it down from moving ahead.Nancy Maldonado is the President and CEO of the Chicano Federation.
