DETROIT, Mich. -- The Detroit Police Department is responding to a video that shows an officer fatally shooting a dog in its own yard.Officers say it happened Aug. 3 on the east side of the Michigan city.The video shows the dog in a yard latching onto a police K-9's snout and not letting go. The officer then drew her weapon and shot the dog, which died from its injuries."It's unfortunate that it came to this. We do not like to see any animal hurt, especially these K-9 officers. They are truly dog lovers and champions for K-9s. But at this point, her dog was being severely injured and had no choice," Commander Darin Szilagy said.Detroit police did internally investigate and cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.That K-9 officer continues to be evaluated and treated for injuries. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — There's something of a spectacle along the beach in Del Mar these days: A bulldozer that's helping to preserve the city's main attraction.The heavy equipment is taking wet sand from the water line up to the public entrance areas, where it will protect access points to the beach. On Wednesday, the work was being done near the 23rd Street entrance. On Tuesday, it was closer to homes near 29th Street. "Without a beach in Del Mar, we're not Del Mar," said Councilman Dwight Worden. Worden says the bulldozer can only do so much. In the bigger picture, the city is negotiating with the California Coastal Commission on how it can combat rising sea levels. Worden noted that scientists have predicted the sea level to rise by six feet by the year 2100. "If it rises, it's going to erode the beaches, if it floods more from climate change, we'll have more flood water coming down and putting them at risk, so it's a combination," he said.Worden says the city has a plan to preserve its beaches through at least 2050 largely through a sand replenishment program, which the commission has not approved. He said Del Mar has put a controversial plan called "Managed Retreat" off the table. Managed Retreat could entail removing the multi-million dollar homes that line the shore to allow the beach to expand inland. The Coastal Commission has given the city 25 suggestions on its plan. Worden, however, said some of those suggestions appear to be nudging the city toward practices that could be like Managed Retreat. "If you look at the 25 changes, they're kind of gumming around that back and through the kitchen door," he said. The two agencies will next meet in February. DENVER -- An Aurora Theater Shooting survivor, who made the difficult decision to amputate his leg after years of excruciating pain, is now taking his first steps toward recovery.Joshua Nowlan was shot in the arm and the leg in the 2012 movie theater shooting, and recovery has been hell. "Last night, I couldn't sleep whatsoever," Nowlan said, walking into Creative Technology Prosthetic's Denver office. "I was so excited that today finally has come that I can put my prosthetic on for the first time."After doctors amputated his leg in January, he had major complications, including kidney failure, a serious fall and a hematoma that required another emergency surgery."I am still completely 100 percent on the side that I am happy, that I did the amputation surgery," Nowlan said, rubbing the stump that is still swollen and healing.As he took his first steps on his prosthetic, he began to cry."It feels so weird, but it feels so right, too, at the same time," he said.Zach Harvey made the prosthetic and said that eventually, Nowlan will walk without any assistance and with a different prosthetic."Right now, we want something a little softer, but as he starts to tolerate pressure, walk faster, and wants to do more activities, then we'll provide him with something a little springier," Harvey said.Nowlan said it's another piece in the puzzle he is trying to put back together."Even though it happened five years ago, he took something from me that will never be put back together," Nowlan said. "And here I am trying to makeshift those puzzle pieces and put them back in."  1656

It’s been passed down through three generations. “My grandparents started this house and he finished it,” said Linda Duran of her father, Gerald Duran. “You name it, I did it,” laughed the Korean War Veteran about the hundreds of hours he’s poured into the family home over the years. This home not only represents a wonderful building achievement, but it’s a place where laughter and memories have been shared every single day. Stories of war, stories about school days and all that life brings in between. As their family grew, the home expanded. “I built this, I built that,” said Gerald pointing around the property. “With help, you know, you cannot do anything without help.” This year, Linda and her dad found their family needing a little help with their home once again. “There were a lot of things that needed work and especially, the safety,” said Linda. The outside doors didn’t close or lock, and the kitchen didn’t have working appliances. But COVID-19 made those repairs impossible to pay for after Linda lost her job. “Can't do anything anymore hardly,” said Gerald. “I want to go to bingo. No, I ain't got no money. Got to buy groceries. That's what's hard. That's what gets hard.” “You're not able to do the things you used to be able to do afford, because being on a fixed income and no income is detrimental,” said Linda. So, she reached out for help. “It’s an awful feeling because I’m not no spring chicken, so I just feel like, ‘Gosh at this point in my life, I should be able to help him more than I am,’” said Linda. A nonprofit called Rebuilding Together answered her prayers. The nationwide group connects contractors and volunteers willing to donate work and supplies for critical home repairs in their own communities. “The majority of people we help are older Americans, veterans or people with disabilities, and so they’re supposed to stay at home and shelter at home, and it’s kind of hard to do that if it’s not safe in their house,” said Jodie Liddy, who works with volunteers across Denver, Colorado. 2107
