But would drivers actually slow down if the city were to lower the speed limit?According to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it would. The study was done on the streets of Boston, and it found that lowering the default speed limit from 30 to 25 reduced the odds of a vehicle going over 35 miles per hour by about 30 percent.The study also found the odds of exceeding 30 mph fell by over 8 percent, and the odds someone would exceed 25 mph fell by almost 3 percent.The study did not examine how the lower speed limits affected crashes, but the institute plans to study that in their next phase.The authors of the study also say that the number of deaths related to speeding were actually higher on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or lower, than it is on roadways where cars are going much faster. 900

Wildfires continue to ravage the western United States, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, where 28 people have died and officials are bracing for more death.Hundreds of thousands of acres are currently burning in about 100 fires in 13 western states, but areas of Northern California and Oregon have seen unprecedented and catastrophic damage this week.Since mid-Auhust least 19 people have died in California — nine alone in the North Complex Fire that's currently burning north of Sacramento. With a population density of six people per square mile, few places are quite as suited to ride out COVID-19 as Wyoming.But in the south-central part of the state, close to the Colorado border, sits a ranch that might offer the best accommodations of all.At ,000 per night, renting out Magee Homestead might not be for everyone, but for the clients it does attract, it offers an opportunity to quarantine with family while offering the ability to vacation with fly fishing, archery, and horseback riding.“The decision was either to open or not,” said ranch proprietor Jeremy Belnap. “Then, we slowly started to get inquiries for families wanting to get away.”Like so many businesses across the country, the ranch had to answer a difficult question during the months of March and April.“We had originally chosen to close the ranch for the season and open back up for the 2021 season,” said Belnap.With 7,500 acres of land to tend to and dozens of living spaces that require electricity, the prospect of closing was daunting and carried loads of overhead.“Financially, we suffer if we close the night with two or four guests on property,” Belnap said. “We have a staff of 45 dedicated people. We spend that much on labor in a day so it can cripple you.”As it was preparing to close, however, the ranch started getting calls from families, some of whom had stayed at Magee Homestead previously, that were interested in renting the entire ranch out.After some consideration, Belnap and the staff made the decision to switch their business model to accommodate the buyouts, allowing them to stay open while offering the families a chance to stay safe away from home.“It’s like we’re quarantining together,” said Belnap. “[It was] a light bulb moment. We took enough phone calls to say this could really make sense.”At capacity, the ranch can house up to 12 couples at a time. With coronavirus cases spreading among White House staff, the Commission on Presidential Debates confirmed Monday evening that a Plexiglas partition will be used on stage during Wednesday’s vice presidential debate.Peter Eyre, a senior adviser to the debate commission, said that the candidates will be seated 12 feet, 3 inches apart, and that there will be no handshakes allowed on stage between the candidates or moderator.Eyre added that the candidates, Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris, will be tested for the coronavirus before the debate.
