Doctors treating a Taiwanese woman for a swollen eye were shocked to find four tiny bees living under her left eyelid. The miniscule insects, known as sweat bees, are 3 to 4 millimeters (0.12-0.16 inches) in length. Doctors at Taiwan's Fooyin University Hospital discovered the bees."I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging things inside," said Hung Chi-ting, the head of the ophthalmology department.Sweat bees, also known as halictidae, "nest near graves and in fallen trees, so it's easy to come across them while hiking in mountains," Hung explained.According to CTS, the woman, identified by her family name of He, said she thinks the insects blew into her eye at a relative's grave site when she visited it with her family. She washed her eyes with water but kept experiencing severe pain."It was very painful. Tears wouldn't stop coming out of my eye," she said. "I was scared to death."After three hours of agony, He visited the hospital, where doctors determined she was suffering from cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and severe corneal erosion caused by the sweat bees."Thankfully she came to the hospital early, otherwise I might have had to take her eyeball out to save her life," Hung said. He's eyesight had been reduced to under 0.1, the equivalent of 20-200 vision on the Snellen eye chart measuring visual acuity, Hung told reporters. "Luckily, she didn't have a high fever and it hadn't affected her central nervous system."Local media reported that He was expected to make a full recovery. The sweat bee feeds off nectar and pollen, but is also drawn to human perspiration, which provides "precious moisture and salts," according to the 1762
CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Illinois at Chicago campus was on edge Monday after a 19-year-old kinesiology student was found strangled to death in a parking garage over the weekend.Police have detained a person of interest, they say. After Ruth George's family reported to police Saturday morning that the sophomore had not been heard from since the night before, authorities tracked her phone to a parking garage near the school's library, quad and engineering facilities, UIC Police Chief Kevin Booker said in a statement."Our investigation has determined that Ms. George was alone when she entered the Halsted Street Parking Garage on Nov. 23 at approximately 1:35 a.m. A person of interest entered the garage shortly after Ms. George," Booker's statement said. The person of interest has no ties to the university, the chief said.Police say they believe foul play was involved, but they've neither named the person of interest nor announced what, if any, charges she or he will face.George's cause of death was strangulation, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said."The traumatic loss of life of one of our community members is very difficult to comprehend and surely invokes a range of emotions for all of us," 1239
DENVER — A Muslim civil rights organization is calling for an investigation after they say a Muslim-American woman was told to remove her hijab in order to enter a local arena. The Colorado chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says Gazella Bensreiti was told by an employee at the Pepsi Center that she needed to remove her headscarf in order to be allowed into the arena.Bensreiti, a mother of three, was trying to enter the arena to watch her daughter perform the national anthem. An employee at Will Call allegedly told her "take that thing off" or not be allowed entrance, according to CAIR officials. When Bensreiti asked if she could remove her hijab in private and in front of a woman, but the employee allegedly refused. CAIR then says she was "subjected to public humiliation in front of staff, students and other parents, until her daughter became distraught, believing her mom would not be allowed in to see her perform." At a news conference scheduled for Wednesday morning, CAIR will also call on Pepsi Center officials to change their policy regarding religious attire of event attendees.Pepsi Center officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The civil rights organization said they have reported, "an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president." 1415

During a press conference at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Donald Trump said he would "love" to testify at his own impeachment trial."I'd love to go, wouldn't that be great?" Trump said. "Wouldn't that be beautiful? I'd love to sit right in the front row and stare in their corrupt faces. I'd love to do it."When asked why he wouldn't go, he joked with a reporter, "don't keep talking, you may convince me to do it."Trump also said that his legal team "might have a problem" if he showed up at the trial. Trump went on to call the House's lead impeachment manager Adam Schiff a "major sleazebag." 636
