BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's three-day U.N. visit this week has been fruitful as a major diplomatic effort at a time when new changes are emerging in the world economy and politics, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi told reporters Friday.Wen was in New York from Tuesday to Thursday for the U.N. Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the general debate of the 65th session of the U.N. General Assembly, a summit of the U.N. Security Council member states, and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and MDGs. He also met with U.S. President Barack Obama on bilateral ties and regional and world issues, calling for more cooperation.Yang said Wen made the New York trip as the world economy stabilized and started to show improvement but the recovery remained unbalanced and was still not solid.The international community has, in general, made significant progress on meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the minister said. he said, however, more imminent is the imbalance in international development and there are new challenges in international cooperation and development.The developing countries want more attention from the international community on the development issue, the minister said, and countries are ever more willing to promote peace, development and cooperation. They, he said, expect a greater role for the United Nations in safeguarding world peace, promoting mutual development and advancing international cooperation.Wen's trip also came at a time when there are some misunderstandings and misinterpretations about China, which had led the global economic recovery and was put in the global spotlight, Yang said.Wen's visit was also important given that the handling of ties between China and the United States, in particular the appropriate handling of the differences and the advancing of mutual trust and cooperation, is of great importance to the health of their bilateral relations, the foreign minister added.PRESENTING CHINA AS IT ISPremier Wen tried to present China as it is at the U.N. meetings, the welcome banquet in his honor organized by friendly organizations, meetings with foreign leaders and guests, and in media interviews.The premier was sincere and objective about the true condition, challenges and development strategy of China. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in south China's Guangzhou, host city of the 2010 Asian Games, Saturday said it will cancel a newly-launched free public transportation service due to the enormous public response, which might pose a security threat to the Asian Games.The government earlier this month launched the color-coding scheme for vehicles, effectively grounding half of the city's 2.1 million private cars and those entering the city each day during the Asian Games.As a remedy, free public transport service was to be offered for 30 working days beginning November 1.The offer was met with unprecedented enthusiasm from Guangzhou residents. For days, subway trains were often crammed and stations were full as swarms of people lined up to take a free ride.Now, officials with Guangzhou's transportation authorities said they had to rescind the offer as more than 8 million passengers took the subway on an average day beginning November 1, a figure "much, much higher" than the subway system was designed to carry.Further, traffic controls were put into force 144 times during the week, which "seriously affects the normal security checks required for the Games" and causes "great inconvenience," officials said.Guangzhou authorities plan to roll back the free-day scheme on Nov. 8 and replace it with a cash subsidy program in which each household in Guangzhou will receive 150 yuan as a transportation subsidy from the government.The Asian Games are scheduled to begin on November 12, featuring 11,700 athletes competing in 42 sports.

BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Tuesday that China would coordinate its national family planning policy, stabilizing an appropriately low birth rate and improving the quality of its population."The fact remains that China has a large population. The issue of population is always a major issue for China's social and economic development," said Li at a seminar marking the 30th anniversary of the Family Planning Association of China in Beijing.The government must solve the issue in a way that takes into consideration the whole picture of China's long-term social and economic development, he said.Chinese government statistics show China's population stood at 1.32 billion at the end of 2008, which was about 2.5 times the number in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded.The Chinese government adopted a family planning policy in the late 1970s which basically permits most urban households to have only one child.The policy had helped China's total population increase less than 40 percent between 1978 and 2008, whereas it nearly doubled between 1949 and 1978.Li said the government would make efforts to improve the quality of the population, optimize the population structure and spur the rational distribution of the people, so as to turn the pressure of the population into an advantage of human resources.He also said the government would launch measures to narrow the widening ratio of men to women and address problems arising with an aging population.The population aged at or above 60-years-old will top 200 million by the end of 2015, government reports showed.

KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.
