SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new trend is challenging people to put down their phones, but many people report feeling anxious when separated from their devices. Called nomophobia, short for no more phone phobia, 73 percent of teens in a recent addiction study reported feeling anxious when their phones had no charge according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens. That same study found that the teens checked their phones once every 23 minutes. New research suggests that our phones keep us in a persistent state of anxiety that’s only relieved by checking our phones Dr. Nancy Cheever told ABC News. Her research suggests phone-induced anxiety works on a positive feedback loop. According to a Rutgers University study, cellphone distraction in the classroom can lead to lower grades. The report lays out how dividing your attention between your phone and real life has serious consequences on how much information you retain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Marine was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Midway District just after 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, according to San Diego Police.The victim, who was in his early 20's, was visiting an establishment with his friends earlier that night.At some point, his friends could not find him. Police said he walked or fell into the street in the 2700 block of Midway Drive.Police said a car hit him and took off toward Rosecrans Street. There was no description of the driver or vehicle available. Police were checking surveillance video and his phone to find out more information. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego family is hoping to make their way home from Mexico on Thursday after having to ride out Hurricane Delta at the hotel where they were staying. Victor Lopez is a local restaurant owner of El Pollo Grill. Lopez's family traveled to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico last week. As Hurricane Delta was approaching, they booked a flight to leave the region, but their flight was canceled as they were heading to the airport. As the hurricane was approaching, the family was moved to a hotel ballroom where they spent the night as the hurricane passed. Lopez says there were no windows in the ballroom so they could only hear the heavy rain and strong winds. Lopez admits that the ballroom was crowded and there was some concern of COVID-19, but he said the hotel staff was disinfecting constantly and everyone was wearing masks. The hurricane did little damage to the resort in Playa Del Carmen, but just 45 minutes away in Cancun's hotel zone, debris and palm fronds were scattered all over the streets. Lopez and his family are hoping to return to San Diego on Thursday afternoon. Hurricane Delta is expected to make landfall in Louisiana on Friday afternoon. 1188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy sailor appeared in court Tuesday after authorities say he stole 20 hand grenades from a San Diego-based guided missile destroyer.Authorities say Gunner’s Mate Second Class Aaron Booker was taken into custody in Illinois.According to court documents, personnel assigned to the USS Pinckney discovered that 20 grenades disappeared from their storage crates in 2017.In April 2017, an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed a black backpack leaning against a guardrail on the side of the road along Interstate 15 in northwest Arizona.The bag was standard military issue with “GM2 BOOKER” handwritten on a tag inside the bag. The bag contained 18 of the grenades that were missing from the USS Pinckney.According to authorities, law enforcement is still searching for the two missing grenades.The complaint states that Booker acknowledged to investigators that he drove the same route before reporting to his duty station in March.“A backpack full of grenades on the side of the road is obviously extremely dangerous and could have had resulted in injuries or death,” said U.S. Attorney Adam L. Braverman said. “The theft of explosives is a very serious offense, particularly if it is carried out by an insider with access to military weapons and secrets.”Booker will appear for a detention hearing before being transferred to San Diego. The maximum penalty for the crime is 10 years in prison and a 0,000 fine.  1462
