The Colorado-based burrito chain Illegal Pete’s has been up and running for over two decades, and the company now has nearly a dozen locations. “[Business has] been great for us,” said the chain’s founder Pete Turner. And it got even greater, Turner says, after an epiphany of sorts a few years ago. He thought to himself, “’What can this business be?’ And really, who is the face of the business? It’s the employees.”In 2015, Turner made a pledge—one that was practically unheard of at the time—to raise the minimum wages of his employees from an hour to . His plan was to increase pay gradually over three years. This month, that wage goes into effect.“Our employees are going to be able to live more comfortably [and have] fulfilled lives.,” he says. “They’ll be able to be more engaged in their job.”Employees like Kristina Keeling, who works in an entry-level position at Illegal Pete’s, says she knows firsthand how big of a difference those extra few dollars an hour make.“If I am surviving better in the world, then I’m going to come to work feeling a little bit better,” Keeling said. “Maybe feeling a little more positive about the world and I think I can give that and share that with the customers as well.”The federal minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2009, and it still sits at .25 an hour. However, many states have raised it on their own. Now, the nation is a hodgepodge of wages, and in some cases, large companies are now leading the way. Amazon, Target and Disney have announced they’ll pay employees an hour. However, critics argue small businesses will suffer if forced to pay an hour. The result may be to lay off workers or reduce hours. But Leo Gertner, with the National Employment Law Project, says when it’s done slowly, it works.“All of these changes have been extremely gradual,” Gertner explains. “Cents over time, and companies have been able to absorb the costs, including small businesses.”That’s how things are done at Illegal Pete’s. Turner’s mantra: make a slow buck, not a quick one.“It’s just nice to know we’ve got, let’s say, 380 people in Colorado that are able to live the lives they want to, go to school, grow in this company, get married, have kids, buy a house, and still work here,” Turner says. 2272

The Boy Scouts of America on Tuesday said it has referred about 120 allegations of abuse by scout leaders to law enforcement for further investigation, saying it believes victims and that the youth organization is working to identify "additional alleged perpetrators.""We care deeply about all victims of abuse and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting," the youth organization said in a written statement. "We believe victims, we support them, we pay for counseling by a provider of their choice, and we encourage them to come forward."The Boy Scouts issued the statement a day after a lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania, accusing a scout leader in the state of committing "unspeakable acts of sexual abuse" against a boy during overnight camping trips and day excursions. The abuse included "hundreds of instances of fondling, hundreds of incidents of oral sexual assault and repeated attempts of anal penetration," according to the suit."The Boy Scout Defendants' conduct was an outrageous violation of societal norms and went so far beyond all possible bounds of decency so as to be regarded as atrocious and utterly intolerable in a civilized community," the suit says. The allegations were made by a now 57-year-old man identified only as S.D. The suit also alleged the assistant scoutmaster "actively groomed young boys under his charge for later sexual molestation." The accuser said he would be plied with drugs and alcohol before being abused, including acts of sodomy. The suit went on to say the scout leader "utilized physical, emotional and spiritual force and persuasion to impose his moral will upon the then minor S.D. in order to commit grievous, unspeakable acts of sexual abuse." The abuse began "sometime in approximately 1974 or 1975 and continuing until approximately 1979 or 1980," according to the suit. The accuser is being represented by Abused in Scouting, a group of three law firms that came together to shed light on abuse within the Boy Scouts. The group said it has been contacted by around 800 men over the last six months with credible allegations of abuse by scout leaders and it has identified about 350 scout leaders not contained in the so-called "perversion files," a blacklist of alleged molesters within the organization first identified in 2012 by the 2339

The man who police say is seen on video dropping off rice cookers Friday in downtown New York was taken into custody early Saturday morning, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation said.Three rice cookers, initially described as suspicious devices, were discovered Friday morning in Manhattan, prompting a brief scare and causing delays during the busy morning subway commute. All the devices were ultimately deemed safe. The man was found unconscious around 2 a.m. ET at an address in the Bronx and is hospitalized, the source said. He was taken into custody on a previous bench warrant unrelated to Friday's incident and has not been charged in connection with the rice cookers, the source said. The "individual has been located and the investigation continues," NYPD Chief of Detectives 821
