SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — On Monday, a planetary sight unseen for nearly 800 years will captivate stargazers as Jupiter and Saturn create a celestial event known as the "Christmas Star."The two bright planets will align to create an even brighter display, culminating on the night of Monday, Dec. 21, according to NASA. While the two planets pass each other regularly, this year's event is so rare because not only is the distance between the planets so close but it's also occurring at night."You can imagine the solar system to be a racetrack, with each of the planets as a runner in their own lane and the Earth toward the center of the stadium," said Henry Throop, astronomer in the Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "From our vantage point, we’ll be able to be to see Jupiter on the inside lane, approaching Saturn all month and finally overtaking it on December 21."The closest alignment will last for a few days and appear just a tenth of a degree apart. On Monday, Jupiter and Saturn will appear so close that a pinkie finger at arm’s length will easily cover both planets.The planets haven't passed this closely in 400 years, and it's been nearly 800 years since this "Great Conjunction" has occurred at night, NASA says."Conjunctions like this could happen on any day of the year, depending on where the planets are in their orbits," said Throop. "The date of the conjunction is determined by the positions of Jupiter, Saturn, and the Earth in their paths around the Sun, while the date of the solstice is determined by the tilt of Earth’s axis. The solstice is the longest night of the year, so this rare coincidence will give people a great chance to go outside and see the solar system."HOW TO SEE ITIn San Diego County, viewers can see the planets without needing a telescope by looking toward the southwest horizon just after sunset, NASA says, but a pair of binoculars or a small telescope will only enhance the view. The best way to see the phenomenon is by finding an unobstructed view of the sky from say a park or field. The sight should even be viewable from most cities, but the site will only be visible after sunset for about one to two hours.To tell the two planets apart prior to Monday when they switch positions in the sky, Jupiter will look like a bright star and be easily seen, while Saturn will look slightly fainter and slightly above and to the left of Jupiter.For photographers, NASA recommends using a long exposure time to take in enough light as it gets dark. Both cell phone camera and DSLR camera users are encouraged to use a tripod to reduce any shaking during a long exposure.Cell phone users may even want to use "night mode" or a wide-angle lens if available. DSLR users may consider setting their focus to manual and leaving their aperture wide open to let in as much light as possible.Jupiter and Saturn should be bright enough to allow photographers to capture the planets without needing to zoom, NASA says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was shot Sunday outside of a College Area smoke shop, according to police.It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting, but San Diego Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been shot just before 5:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of El Cajon Blvd., outside of Aztec Smoke & Vape Shop.The victim was hit in the leg and chest and taken to a nearby hospital, but their condition was not clear.The area was closed by police for the investigation.10News is monitoring this breaking news. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday over reports of a suspicious person.In a Facebook post, the base said "all personnel onboard the installation are directed to seek shelter in the nearest building and activate lock down procedure" and remain inside until told otherwise. The lockdown was lifted just before 2 p.m. and Harbor Drive was reopened to traffic. The base told 10News that it appeared the caller believed to have seen a suspicious person, but the person in question was not believed to be a threat.The base added the Gateway Youth Center and Patrick Wade CDC had been taken off lockdown and parents allowed to pick up their children.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 722

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District officials say they are going fully online for the fall school year after originally planning to give students the option for in-person instruction.In a letter to parents on Wednesday, the school district said that "stringent" standards that need to be met for in-person classes "have made it impossible for any San Diego County school district to physically reopen schools for in-person instruction before mid-September."PUSD said it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. But the requirement now requires that the county is off the watch list for 28 consecutive days, and if at any point the county exceeds the threshold for three days, it would be back on the state list and have to go through another 28-day cycle."In late Fall, we will reevaluate our plans taking into full consideration then-current public health conditions, and guidelines and restrictions from the Governor and public health department," the district said in a release. "While this information is likely to disappoint the majority of our staff and families who indicated a desire to return to on-campus learning as soon as possible, everyone should know that -- due to our extensive planning thus far -- PUSD will be ready for a prompt and safe return to in-person instruction if permitted to do so come January."The school district says its 2020-21 school year will start virtually on Sept. 2, and remain fully virtual through the December break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, 2021.The district adds that teachers and instructional assistants will receive additional training in virtual teaching platforms and tools in August and that the district will provide all the necessary technology for teachers and students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 50 free health classes could come to community centers and libraries across San Diego. It would be part of a sponsorship deal the city is considering with Sharp HealthCare, in which Sharp would pay the city 0,000 a year for the right to market as the city's "Health and Wellness Partner."Sharp currently offers classes, many of them free, but most are at Sharp facilities.This arrangement, going before a city committee Wednesday, and ultimately before the City Council, would call for six free classes a year in each of the nine council districts, from Otay Mesa to Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Eunice Sanchez-Mata, of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said patients usually see her once or twice a year."We're here educating them as best as we can, but really that education should be year long," she said. The classes would impart key information on ways to prevent heart disease, quit smoking, live with diabetes, and manage stress.
