TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. The peoples of the two countries should promote mutual understanding, trust and cooperation between them, Wen said in an interview with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK."Japan's pacifist constitution adopted after World War II stipulates that Japan should follow the road of peaceful development, which has brought tangible benefits to Japan in terms of rapid economic growth and greatly improved standards of living for the Japanese people," Wen said.Speaking of China's tremendous social and economic progress since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy more than 30 year ago, he said China will stick to the path of peaceful and harmonious development."Both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. Therefore, both the Chinese and Japanese peoples should understand and trust each other and cooperate with each other," he said. The reason why China attaches so much importance to taking history as a mirror and looking into the future is by no means intended to perpetuate hatred, but to promote the feelings and friendship between the two peoples and to prevent a repeat of the past tragedy, Wen said.He called on the leaders, news media and the academic circles of both countries to play their part in facilitating the exchange of thoughts and the friendship between the two peoples and promote their mutual understanding.

BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- In an effort to safeguard their honor as role models in both academic research and conduct, some Chinese academicians on Monday called on the country's scientists to cut social activities and halt the practice of taking too many part-time jobs.Chen Yiyu, director of the committee for moral reconstruction under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academic Divisions, urged academicians to be highly alert against and pay attention to "unhealthy practices" and corrupt behaviors. In a speech delivered at a plenary meeting of the CAS, Chen voiced firm opposition to the practice of academicians' holding too many posts and accepting inappropriate rewards.Chen said academicians should not attend thesis defense, appraisal, consultant or award-giving activities which were irrelevant to their research and they should be cautious and objective when giving comments publicly.CAS academician Zheng Shiling said he also opposed to the practices of academicians' taking too many posts and attending too many social activities, which were time-consuming and would affect their research and teaching."We should firmly oppose to the practice of holding posts in areas that have nothing to do with the academicians' research and part-time jobs that reward them improper benefits,"

CHICAGO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The macroeconomic control policies adopted by the Chinese government since mid-2008 have been proven successful, two economists said Saturday.Since late 2008, the Chinese government has taken a series of macroeconomic control policies to deal with the global financial crisis. The government carried on massive financial investment, some of which focused on real estate."In spite of some problems, the Chinese government has been making great progress in regulating and controlling the Chinese economy during the global financial crisis," Min Tang, a Chinese economist, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua."Everything has two sides, good and bad. This macroeconomic control policy is an action taken to fight against a crisis," he said.Tang believed that whether or not the policies are successful should be judged from the macro perspective instead of a micro perspective."China was able to resume its rapid growth first when the global economy was still going downhill," Tang said, "China also successfully kept the confidence of its people and enterprises, which is more important than anything else. Therefore, the government's macro control is very successful."
