Technology is constantly evolving, and often times, it makes things more convenient.Charley Sullivan uses smart technology a lot, specifically her Amazon Echo.The Echo’s virtual assistant, Alexa, will read Charley’s emails aloud to her, check the weather and more.She thought it’d be a great gift for her husband, Bobby, but he knew she’d enjoy it more.“I knew how much she was going to use that thing,” he says. “I mean, she uses it to read her bible listened to radio programs; she plays games on it.” Amazon’s Alexa has brought convenience to homes everywhere, by playing music, checking the news, ordering groceries and more. But it’s especially helpful when you can't see.Both Charley and Bobby are blind.“Well, it's so wonderful,” Charley says of the device. “And when I was a child, we had braille, and we had books on records.”Now, the two are using Alexa, along cell phones and an Apple watch to make life easier.While they wish the technology could do even more, the two are grateful.“If you are going to be blind, this is the time, the day and time to be blind, with all the technology that there is out there today,” Charley says. 1155

TEXAS — A 78-year-old man has confessed to 90 killings, and investigators are saying he could be one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history.Samuel Little is currently being held in a Texas prison. Investigators have confirmed 34 cases so far, and the FBI said in a news release Tuesday that more are pending confirmation. The killings Little has claimed responsibility for include a black female in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1974 and a white female in Covington, Kentucky in 1984, according to the FBI. Little said he met that second victim in Columbus, Ohio and disposed of her body somewhere in Northern Kentucky. Neither of those confessions had been corroborated by law enforcement as of Nov. 15.The women Little confessed to killing turned up dead between 1970 and 2005 in states from coast to coast, according to the FBI.  863

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has ordered county elections officials in Pennsylvania to keep separate mail-in ballots that arrived after Election Day. The state’s top elections official already had ordered those ballots be kept apart.The order came Friday night in response to a plea from the state Republican Party as Democrat Joe Biden inched ahead of President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania in the presidential race.Alito, acting on his own, said he was motivated in part by the Republicans’ assertion that they can’t be sure elections officials are complying with guidance issued by Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar, a Democrat.The justice handles emergency appeals from Pennsylvania. He ordered a response from the state by Saturday afternoon and said he has referred the matter to the full court for further action.The order is related to an ongoing Republican appeal to the Supreme Court to try to keep ballots received in the mail after Election Day from being counted. The state’s top court granted a three-day extension, and the Supreme Court refused to block it.The Associated Press has not declared a winner in the state. 1159

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — An upcoming rule change at the U.S. Department of Justice means federal inmate executions, which are currently carried out by lethal injection could happen by other means, such as a firing squad or electrocution.Currently, all federal executions are done via lethal injection unless a court specifically orders otherwise. The rule change gives the federal government greater flexibility to execute people by other means.The change states that federal executions are to be carried out by lethal injection “or by any other manner prescribed by the law of the State in which the sentence was imposed or which has been designated by a court.”According to the Death Penalty Information Center, all states that allow the death penalty authorize a lethal injection method. Nine states allow electrocution, seven allow lethal gas and three allow a firing squad. Most states that allow methods other than lethal injection do so only under the provision that the injection is found to be unconstitutional, unavailable or impractical.The DOJ rule change goes into effect on Dec. 24, before three more federal inmates are scheduled to be executed. Inmates are scheduled to be executed on Jan. 12, Jan. 14 and Jan. 15.If executions by other means will happen, it’s unlikely they will happen at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Terre Haute, where federal executions typically take place. The DOJ notice states that the Terre Haute complex is equipped for carrying out executions only by lethal injection.
