SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With California hospitals dealing with an “extreme” number of patients, many are struggling to find enough staff to run nearly full intensive care units.The state is urgently searching for 3,000 temporary medical workers to meet the demand, with a focus on nurses trained in critical care.“Staffing is our number one challenge,” Governor Gavin Newsom said last week.The state has contracted with two travel nursing agencies to find reinforcements, including San Diego-based Aya Healthcare, the nation’s largest travel nursing company.“California has the most needs in the country right now,” said Aya vice president Sophia Morris. “It’s the number one state that we’re seeing need.”Aya is onboarding new travel nurses as quickly as possible, Morris said, but at the moment they can’t keep up with demand. Right now, about one-third of the requests for travel nurses are going unfilled, said California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly.“We are adding hundreds and hundreds of new clinicians to start, particularly in California, every week,” Morris said. “So it’s coming. I think it just feels like it’s not coming fast enough.”Aya said it is on track to add about 780 more travel nurses in California by mid-January, on top of the 2,676 travel clinicians that are already on assignment in the state.But some experts say it’s a particularly challenging time to find spare nurses with so many regions across the country dealing with surges.On top of that, the number of registered nurses over 60 has dipped in California, according to researchers at UCSF, who found many older nurses stopped working out of concern for their health or the health of their family.California hospitals are confronting the shortage by trying to free up staff any way they can, including postponing certain medical procedures.The state has also temporarily loosened some restrictions. Typically, California requires one nurse for every two ICU patients. Regulators have temporarily relaxed that requirement to one nurse for every three ICU patients.California has also shortened the quarantine period for healthcare staff exposed in certain situations from 10 days to 7.The state has sent more than 600 temporary healthcare workers to hard-hit counties from the National Guard, the California Health Corps and other partnerships, but officials are still looking for more.State officials have even started reaching out to other countries like Australia and Taiwan to get much-needed medical workers. 2520

San Diego County is on track to move into the most restrictive tier, meaning restaurants, personal care shops like nail salons, museums, zoos, places of worship, movie theaters, and gyms all have to operate completely outside. The county is expected to announce that rollback Tuesday, Sept. 22.Ricardo Zarate Jr is the Director of Operations for Leucadia Company, a group that manages three Encinitas restaurants, including Valentina and Moto Deli. When asked about the roller coaster of opening and closing, he said his restaurants will make it, but knows it’s hard on others.“On one hand it would be nice to not be wondering when the next step back is going to come but on the other hand, I can see how some of our fellow restaurants do benefit, even if it’s briefly, from being able to open up their indoors,” he said.Jessica Huynh at Bella Paris Nails in Little Italy knows the benefits of being able to open indoors. Her nail salon does not have the space to open outside, so they stayed closed the whole pandemic. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Cal Fire also offers tips on what to include in an emergency kit.
