ANKARA, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Ankara on Thursday night for a three-day official visit to Turkey.Turkey is the last leg of Wen's four-nation tour, which has taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy. BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Monday signed a series of political and commercial deals on his second state visit to China, a sign of closer strategic ties between the two world powers.Medvedev held talks with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao Monday in Beijing. They celebrated the completion of a long-awaited China-Russia oil pipeline, the largest bilateral project between the two countries.The 999-km pipeline runs from Angarsk in Russia to Daqing in northeast China. It is part of a bilateral loan-for-oil deal that was reached in 2009. Under it, China makes a 25-billion-U.S.-dollar long-term loan to Russia while Russia supplies China with 300 million tonnes of oil through pipelines from 2011 until 2030."The smooth completion of the pipeline project is a model for the two countries' mutually beneficial win-win cooperation and a milestone for China-Russia energy cooperation," said Hu at the completion ceremony.The two countries also signed 15 deals on cooperation covering coal, gas supply, energy efficiency, renewable energy, nuclear power, power grids and banking.Medvedev arrived in northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday to start his state visit. There, he met with veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII, underscoring the "deep bonds" between the Russian and Chinese peoples.

DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

TAIPEI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Financial organizations from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have stepped up cooperation to take advantage of business opportunities brought by a landmark cross-Strait economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).The board of directors of Taiwan-based Taishin Financial Holdings decided on Sept. 9 to sign a cooperation agreement with mainland-based Nanjing Zijin Investment Co., a move hailed by the company as "the first step to enter the mainland."The agreement aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two companies and their subsidiaries, while Nanjing Zijin will ease the way for Taishin's new operations on the mainland, Taishin said.The company's Taishin Bank is also planning to set up an office in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Prior to this, China Huarong Asset Management Corporation (CHAMC) and Taiwan-based SinoPac Holdings signed an agreement in Beijing on Sept. 3 to begin a new strategic cooperation. According to the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in personnel training, exchange of management experiences and information, as well as in research, development of new products and new business models.Huarong President Lai Xiaomin said the ECFA would promote a quickening flow of economic resources across the Taiwan Strait, including the movement of personnel, materials, capital and information."The ECFA will bring great business opportunities for cross-Strait economic development and boost cooperation between financial institutions on both sides, thus bringing new development opportunities for financial industries across the Strait," he said.The ECFA, which is to take effect on Sunday, was signed by negotiators from the mainland and Taiwan in June, and aims to establish a systematic mechanism for enhancing cross-Strait economic cooperation.Wang Jianmin, a researcher of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said substantial financial cooperation between the two sides has lagged behind trade cooperation for a long time."The ECFA, however, will have a positive impact," he said.The banking service sectors might be among the first to make breakthroughs in cross-Strait financial cooperation.The mainland-based Bank of China and Bank of Communications applied to the Taiwan economic department on Sept. 7 to set up representative offices in Taiwan.According to the ECFA, mainland banks can set up representative offices in Taiwan upon approval by the Taiwan authority and can then apply to set up a branch bank one year after the establishment of representative offices on the island.

HAIKOU, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 130,000 people were evacuated after more than 550 villages were submerged by floods by Wednesday afternoon in southern China's island province of Hainan, local authorities said late Wednesday.The torrential rains are the heaviest in Hainan since 1961, a spokesman for the provincial government said.Water levels at five reservoirs are now in danger of crossing their limits because of heavy rains across the island. Rescuers are working to reinforce them, the official added.The floods have damaged two highways, two national routes, eight provincial routes along with several other roads.So far, no casualties have been reported among tourists, the official said.Torrential rains have battered many areas of Hainan for six days. Several cities, including the provincial capital of Haikou and the beach resort of Sanya, have also suffered flooding. The four cities of Qionghai, Wanning, Ding'an and Haikou were most seriously hit. Parts of the island received an average 324.7 mm of rainfall.Hainan Island is a famous tropical tourist resort and attracts millions of visitors every year. However, tourist numbers were reported to be down by nearly 50 percent Wednesday, the sixth day of the one-week holiday celebrating National Day on Oct. 1.The rains are expected to weaken but continue until the end of the seven-day holiday, an official at the provincial meteorological observatory said Wednesday.
